But it isn’t a vow. Nor, in Australia, does it create a legally binding marriage.

“I Do’” comes from the heart.

Your personal vows can be shared in private, if you wish.

Take the opportunity to read the text as your partner speaks their vows. This reinforces your memory of the moment and the promises.

And if you share them during your First Look, before the ceremony, you will not only go into the ceremony fully aware of what each of you is committing to in your marriage, you’ll have some great photos.

Saying your vows and then exchanging rings might be traditional but is not set in stone!

There are alternative ways!

✔️ Exchange your rings before you say your vows, so that you are making your promises over the rings that will symbolise your commitment for the rest of your lives. There is precedent for this. It was the way it was done way back in mediaeval times.

✔️ Exchange rings while you are saying your vows. Either with or without special words.

✔️Mix it up. Vows, Unity Ritual, Rings. OR Rings, Unity Ritual, Vows.

Getting pronouns right is important. But so is making your wedding ceremony as gender-neutral as possible.

Which means using names instead of possessive determiners!

FACT: His, her, and their, when used as labels on your vows are not pronouns! Pronouns stand alone. Possessive determiners introduce a noun. In this case, indicating whose vows these are. Except that without naming the person, we can’t be sure whose vows these are!

This isn’t just about grammar. It’s about acknowledgement.
