Vows are said aloud in front of witnesses for a reason. The legal words create your marriage. The personal promises speak your commitment to your marriage.

While you may read your vows on the day, they should be written to be said, rather than read. There's a difference. When it is written to be read aloud what you say feels more natural, more personal. And the words have more power.

While apps can bridge conversationalist gaps, they can't put pen to paper for those essential signatures.

So, ensure your special day is as seamless and heartfelt as possible with a real person to translate your love story. 💖

Remember, love is universal, but paperwork isn't! 😉

PS. But if the translation is purely for guests who don't understand English, interpretation services are a courtesy, not a legal requirement, so no paperwork is required.

Throwback Thursday to Medieval Matrimony 💍🕰️

Ever wonder what it meant to be a bride back in the day? In the medieval version of wedding vows, brides promised "to be bonny and buxom in bed and at board." 🤔 Sounds a bit R-rated, right? But hold on, these words aren't what they seem!

Back then, bonny meant good and buxom meant obedient. "Bed" is pretty self-explanatory, but "at board" referred to the dinner table. 🍽️

So, being bonny and buxom was basically a promise to be a good and compliant wife 24/7!

Just a reminder that words change over time. 💗

Current Reads: Unpacking the Art of Vows 📚💍

Diving into Vows: The Modern Genius of an Ancient Rite by Cheryl Mendelson has inspired me to revisit Herbert J. Schlesinger's Promises, Oaths, and Vows. As a wedding celebrant and a Vows Magician crafting vows for couples worldwide, the art of promise-making is at the heart of my work.

It's fascinating to me that throughout most of history, and even today in places like Australia, marriage ceremonies often proceed without explicit promises between the couple.

Legally, a simple statement of taking each other as partners suffices.

Yet, as Mendelson beautifully argues, marriage by vow allows for free choice, making love matches a modern marvel. Her insights into the enduring power of traditional promises resonate deeply.

Schlesinger offers a different perspective, delving into the psychology of promises. He categorizes them into Serious Promises, such as Marriage Vows and Solemn Oaths, and those that aren't as binding.

What's a troth? You may have heard the word in wedding vows taken in church. You've certainly heard it in movies. But what does it mean.

"Plight" means pledge and "troth" means truth and faithfulness.

While generally not a word we hear in modern vows, the commitment expressed when couples marry today remains the same. Just expressed in more contemporary language.

When you don't want to write, or say, lengthy personal vows, "just the legals" accompanied by the reading of an on-point poem, can work. Much depends on the poem, who reads it, how it is introduced, and how well it is read, of course. But here is one that ticks so many boxes!

REMINDER
Regardless of what type of wedding you are having or who is marrying you, the Legal Requirements are the same
✔️ Your Notice of Intended Marriage MUST be lodged with your celebrant no later than a full month before the big day (but can be lodged up to 18 months before). It's a criminal offence to backdate a NOIM.
✔️You must show your celebrant official proof of your date and place of birth (your birth certificate or passport)
✔️You must show your celebrant your photo ID
✔️If you have been married before you must show your celebrant proof of how that marriage ended (divorce or death certificate)
✔️You must sign a Declaration that you are free to marry
✔️You must meet with your celebrant separately from your partner to confirm that you consent to the marriage is free and willing.
👍 You can't get legally married until you've done ALL of the above!
