This is Pete.
15 years ago I walked into a music store in Frankston and started tapping on some drums. The girl at the counter said, "my friend's dad, teaches African drumming if you're interested." I was definitely interested, so went along the next Tuesday night a little nervous but mostly excited. While I'd had a djembé for years, I'd never played in a drumming circle. The difference was completely mindblowing! As soon everyone started playing I felt my heart light up and energy soar. I knew deeply in that moment that I'd found a new passion, or it had found me. My teacher, Pete, was this enthusiastic, kind, incredible musician who made everyone feel so welcome. I continued to follow this passion for 6 years under his guidance, all the way to when I travelled to Africa to learn from drumming masters in Ghana. From there, after travelling Europe I returned home to purchase 20 drums so I could teach people in Melbourne and share my passion like Pete had helped me.
Last week I returned to Balnarring to that same class as Pete has just begun teaching again. It was an honour to be back there in his presence!
You never know where a visit to a music shop may take you! Follow your curiosity in life and lean in to the slightly scary/slightly exciting ideas you may have.
Perhaps you could even book a drumming workshop for a group of friends and share this joyful, therapeutic experience that I felt during my first (and every subsequent) lesson with Pete.
