Hello lovely!
We just loved coming up with this modern take on classic elegance for the recent open day at Montgomery Hall.

We wanted to step away from the big centerpieces and find a way to bring colour to the tables without it dominating the space.

An additional challenge was the fact you can’t use real candles in the hall! So rather than “make do” with with flameless candles which are sometimes a bit orangey for my liking, we thought outside the box and brought in these cute and stylish rechargeable lamps. (Which have now taken up residence in my living room!)

Here At Etta Mae HQ we love when we can multipurpose, repurpose and use items that can live on after the party’s over!

So the plants have been re-potted around the house, the books are on the coffee table, the gold parrot is in my office, and the salt stones in the bedroom.

*Occupation Tapestry*
Hello lovely!

Another fantastic part of the ticket entry into the Maritime Museum is the Occupation Tapestry Gallery.

In case you didn't know, Jersey (and neighbouring island Guernsey) were the only part of the United Kingdom that was occupied by the Nazi's during World War II. The islands were liberated by the Allied troops on 9th May 1945.

In honour of the 50th Anniversary of the liberation, the islanders wove this fabulous tapestry. It has 13 different panels. Each panel depicts a part of island life during the 5 years of the German Occupation and the experiences of the islands during this challenging time.

Each of the 12 parishes drew lots to select the theme of their panel and went to work showing a variety of topics including the outbreak of war, life during the occupation, the restrictions, transport, work and school, social activities, government, deportation and liberation.

The 13th panel of the tapestry was added in 2015 to mark the 70th Anniversary of the liberation. It captures the celebration of the islanders at the centre of lIberation day and how the people of Jersey continue to remember and commemorate the heroes and victims of the Nazi's.

This tapestry is amazing! I am so proud to come from an island with such a rich history and it is such a privilege to have grown up surrounded by so much of it.

*Jersey Maritime Museum*
Hello lovely!

The boys headed out with my dad today for some quality Pops time - a trip in his work van to run some errands and then to the local sports centre for a crack at Paddletennis - apparently to next best thing since sliced bread over here and in Europe.

That left mum and I free to explore the Jersey Maritime Museum

As an island, Jersey obviously has a rich maritime history, but one I hadn't really explored before. Fishing, warfare, pirates and smugglers it's got it all! We were really impressed. With bags of interactive elements, photos galore and artifacts recovered from shipwrecks, it was really cool to see how the island has changed and developed over the centuries, adapting to the times and challenges that it faced.

Did you know that the pier ladder at Bouley Bay is forty feet high and is only fully uncovered by the tides twice a year???? Amazing!

Definitely worth a visit!

*Christmas Shopping*
Hello lovely!

I love living in Perth and I love the hot summers we have...
BUT....
Shopping for presents in 35+ degree heat, in a maxi dress and flip flops is just NOT Chrstmassy for me!

So it was a real treat to be out and about in the island capital of St Helier with my mum and sister to do some Christmas shopping in the cold, fresh air, wrapped up in beanies, scarves and gloves.

We managed to pick up some travel friendly "Santa" presents for the kids, had a nice lunch at a local pub/wine bar and listened to a lovely brass band play Christmas tunes in King Street.

By 3:30pm/4pm it was starting to get dark and the Christmas lights began to twinkle!

The day finished with a trip to the to watch a local production of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass (thanks to my sister for taking us all. Not the traditional pantomime we were hoping for whilst we were here, but an entertaining evening non-the-less.

Hello lovely,

One of my favourite places to go during the school holidays as a child was the Jersey Zoo.

Whenever our grandmother's came to visit, we'd have a jar full of pieces of paper, on which we had written all the activities we wanted to do that summer. Everyday, we'd pull out a slip of paper and that's what we'd do. (Just quietly, I'd always sneak a few extra slips of paper in for my favourite activities so I reckon the zoo was always well represented!) Lol!

I'd never get bored walking (or running around) the 32 acres of parkland, fascinated by and learning about the rarest and most endangered animals that were there.

Established by the fabulous naturalist Gerald Durrell in 1959, the aim has always been conservation and breeding some of the world's most endangered animals.

My boys love animals and we visit regularly, so they were excited to see the animals and learn more about them and their environments.

The Lowland Gorillas, Orangutans and Macaque monkeys were the highlights, with a honorary mention to the new two toed sloths (who were hiding), the flamingos and the reptiles who were very interactive!

It was wonderful sharing these memories with my boys and we even bumped into my oldest friend and her kids. We met aged 5 on the first day of Reception (equivalent of Pre-Primary) and we have been friends ever since. Even though through the years we have been closer at some times more than others and at times many years go by without a word, we know it'll be easy when we do see each other. The best friendships are always like that.

A wonderful day!

*A Room with a View*
Hello lovely!

As you may know, I am taking an extended break this summer to visit my family in Jersey in the Channel Islands, for the kids to experience a cold Northern Hemisphere Christmas, hopefully see snow for the first time (the kids not me!) and explore a little bit of the wonders of Europe!

One of the things that is really important for me with this trip is to share a little part of my history, childhood and experiences with my children as they have never been to the place I grew up. I hope they will get to learn more about me and my family as a result.

Today I'm sharing a little part of this with you too.

This photo was taken from the top floor of our family home. My dad (a very talented builder and craftsman has spent the last 6-7 years converting our old family home from two homes (top and bottom) into two 3 storey townhouses (front and back). The front house (the new family home) is almost finished and it was amazing to see the transformation that has happened since my last visit 10 years ago.

Although I haven't lived in this house for over 25 years, When I went up to the top floor, opened the window and looked out upon this view, it was like I was a kid again. You can smell the clean fresh air (sometimes the smell of salty ocean air) and the view changes every day, depending on the light, whether there are Jersey cows in the fields or people walking their dogs down the lane.

I walked to school every day in all weathers down that lane, had my first kiss just round the bend, played endless games of hide and seek, 20/20 and built dens all around this area.

The yellow house in the foreground is also our old family house. When I was little, it was just an overgrown field with a dilapidated cottage on it. My parents bough the land, my dad designed and built the house with his own hands. We all laid tiles on the roof, did all sorts of jobs during the building process and when we moved in during my teenage years, we had the best parties over the years. It's where I really learnt the art of entertaining and creating a guest experience.

When we all left home, my family sold it and moved back into this house.

It's hard to explain how many wonderful memories this the corner of the world holds for me, but I'm certainly going to try.

Hello lovely!

And we're off!

17hrs and 45mins direct from Perth to London Heathrow. Then a change of terminal, a few hours layover in Heathrow and a short flightier the English Channel to Jersey, Channel Islands.

The food was awful, the entertainment selection was excellent
and the service pretty good.

The whole process was super smooth and despite over 24hrs of travel by the time we walked through the front door at the other end, the pancakes, seeing their breath in the -2 degree cold and watching the flight path on the TV screen in the back of the chairs were the travelling highlights for the boys!

Can't wait to share our adventures with you over the next few weeks!

This is a brilliant way to utlise the scraps that get cut off your wedding dress 👰‍♀️ after the alterations and great a living memory to share with your family for years to come.

No scraps, no problem! Taking some fabric from the train, hem, or lining of your dress can work just as well.

I know of brides, who have had their mother's and even grandmother's wedding dress, altered for their own wedding day. You can use the fabric from these changes, make the baubles and then gift them to your mother or grandmother. 🎄

It's so heart warming, I'm getting a tear in my eye just thinking about how much that would mean to them! 😢
