Inclusive Language Tips for Celebrants 🌈
As celebrants, the words we choose help shape how people feel on one of the most important days of their lives. Here are simple ways to make your ceremonies more inclusive and affirming for LGBTQ+ couples:
1. Swap “bride and groom” for “partners” or their names
Not every couple fits traditional labels. Try:
👉 “Let’s welcome the couple…” or “Alex and Jordan, today is your day…”
2. Replace “Mr. & Mrs.” with “The [Surname]s” or first names
Not everyone shares a surname or uses gendered titles.
👉 “Introducing: Alex & Jordan!” or “The newlyweds!”
3. Use “spouse,” “life partner,” or names instead of “husband and wife”
👉 “As your life partner…” or “You may now kiss your partner!”
4. Avoid binary greetings like “ladies and gentlemen”
Try something more inclusive:
👉 “Welcome, friends and loved ones” or “Welcome, everyone”
5. Ask and use correct pronouns
Before the ceremony, check pronouns and make sure they’re reflected in your script and any printed materials ❤️
✨ Inclusive language isn’t just a nice touch - it creates a safer, more affirming space for everyone. Let’s make love the focus, not tradition.
