Blake Wilson is a mad, q***r and disabled artist using visibility, the doubled edge sword, as an instrument of transformation. Embracing being an outsider clowns are central to his work, they are entwined with circus, humour, and horror, becoming a vessel for play and self-representation. Delusional Maniac is Blake Wilson's first solo exhibition, featuring photography, textiles, and performance, following his win of the Kudos Emerging Artist & Designer Award in 2022.

[Beyond the Dream]
Curated by Elaine Kim

Dreams that can only be seen when you close your eyes are wistful and mysterious. Sleep and dreaming occur together at every stage of slumber, except when you believe you didn't dream, but rather don't remember it.

From the moment you wake up from a dream, the afterimage of the dream is naturally forgotten in your brain.

Unbelievable situations that cannot happen in real life are sometimes entangled in nonsensical stories. For some, dreams are often terrifyingly strange nightmares. That is why dreams are mysterious, bizarre, and frightening. Dreams serve as a medium for expressing untamed thoughts, and the possibilities are endless.

This exhibition presented endless possibilities for artists to explore a deeper and wider world of the unconscious by crossing realistic and illusory spaces through their works.

Opening night: August 17th, 6pm - 9pm
Location: Comber St Studios, Paddington

For some years now, my paintings have been exploring a connection to the New Zealand landscape, that, as someone from a colonial heritage, I didn’t feel was mine to fully embrace – but then I received some surprising DNA results…

It turns out, I have a different biological father than I thought, revealing Māori ancestry that connects me to the Ngāi Tahu people of Te Waipounamu, the South Island of New Zealand, an area with some of the most glorious, mountainous landscapes in the country.

The sense of belonging I was searching for, through the repeated motif of the lines and shapes of the hills in my work, was finally realised. This flipped my point-of-view, from that of an outsider looking in, to someone with a genuine ancestral connection to the hills of New Zealand.

Ways of Seeing' is an art exhibition of work conceived while on a fine arts field trip to Fowlers Gap - an arid zone 1251 km northwest of Sydney and the land of the Wilyakali and Pakanjti People.
The works are as diverse as the eleven creatives contributing to this exhibition.

Artist, mentor, and senior lecturer Peter Sharp from the School of Art, Design, and Architecture, UNSW said, '...the field trip … isn't really just about the landscape, it's about the (artist's) vision'; and poses the question, 'Is it an internal or an external landscape that enables the artist's work?'

On visiting the exhibition, you will be viscerally immersed in both worlds and transported to Fowlers Gap, an extraordinary place.

The exhibition will be held at the Comber Street Studios in Paddington the first week of December and features artists; Blake Wilson, Cecilia Boyd, Gavin Jowitt, Henrietta Richardson, Holly Siles, Libby Blainey, Lucy Whitelaw, Matti, Sally Cooper, Toby Castles & Yao Chen. Opening hours are 11 am – 4 pm.

ABOVE BELOW invites a shift in perception, coalescing around the notion that the most common way we view is only one way to look. Through a cumulation of lived experiences, the artists invite you to explore the unprecedented connectivity between the outer and unseen.

‘The Big Dance’ by opens tonight from 6-8pm, Thursday 24 February.

This exhibition combines the chaos of cancer with the ostentatious and bedazzling kitsch history of the Soviet Union. Utilising a punk-luxe aesthetic, Bec’s work takes an experimental approach in presenting cancer as a bodily glitch, while critiquing discoveries about her Russian cultural heritage.
