💥 FLASHBACK! 💥

20 years ago yesterday, a 26 year old (& thinner) DJ Ben plays a vs vinyl-only DJ set at 6am with his radio co-host L8s at the rave party FRANTIC at St Paul’s on Pulteney Street.

The record he’s mixing in is ‘Live in London’ by Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo.

Note: I still use the same pair of Sennheiser headphones to this day. Cost me $600 in 1999

Many of you know that last week i had a super scary health scare which resulted in me being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital from the Barossa & with a few hour’s notice was in surgery to remove huge blood clots from my lungs.

Not everything went to plan in the operation and I had some heart failure & the doctors put me in an induced coma which i was in for 12 hours.

After recovering for 6 days in hospital, Im now spending the next 4-6 weeks off work and surrounding myself with friends & family with lots of positivity & love 🩷

For all my wedding couples who are waiting for catch up meetings, i’ll be in contact next week to tee up some video chats in the coming month while i properly recover.

When I first began my career as an entertainer over 30 years ago, I would never have dreamed I could one day be nominated as one of the very best in the country. It is once again a great honour for the 4th time to be an NATIONAL FINALIST as a Master of Ceremonies (MC).

So here’s a cool story about one of my future wedding couples.
I met Chelsea & Marc just over 9 years ago at a NYE rave party at the Adelaide Gaol.
Chelsea said to Marc “Ben’s a really great wedding DJ / MC” to which Marc replied “We will have to get you to do ours in a few years!”

At this time, these two had only been dating less than 12 months!

In 2022, Chelsea booked me as well as their wedding venue… BEFORE they were even formally engaged! 😝

She told me “Ben, you’re either going to be DJing an expensive party for me or a wedding for Marc & I”

They then got engaged & today was our first ultra fun planning meeting at

While I’m often very busy many weekends of the year MCing & DJing weddings, for the last 6 years I have also hosted a super fun quiz night every Wednesday at The Greenock Tavern. 😍

Tomorrow we celebrate 6 years (to the day!) of this awesomely fun night!

It begins at 7pm, is FREE to play and runs for approx 2 hours. Earlier this morning in front of her parents & brother… I told her I’m in love with every version of her & asked her to be mine forever, she said yes.

TODAY marks the 30 years since my first ever DJ Gig. All of my MC work was derived from this. Here’s the very detailed story of then until now!

At the time, it was a small idea I'd had to "do the music" for the Year 7 graduation at the local primary school. The school had been organising music themselves for this in the past by recording songs off the radio onto cassette but i knew i could do it better...with CDs!

At the end of the night, the school principal approached me asking for a business card but as I didn't think this would be an on-going project, I didn't have anything of the sort. He asked me to come and meet with him a week later and offered me the chance to do the whole school end-of-term discos. At the age of 16, DJ Ben was suddenly born.

After finishing year 12 in 1995, i now had some experience so I officially started a mobile DJ business with my school mate Paul Amos called Dynamic Disco Productions. We did many primary & secondary school discos, weddings, birthdays, corporate shows and this kept us busy. By mid 1997 I was also doing some short-term residencies in nightclubs including Wednesday nights at Kramers Bar with DJ Jayse (R.I.P.), Thursday nights at Breakers Pool in Light Square & Friday nights for Bubblegum at Player's Bar on Grenfell St.
At the end of 1997 I made the very bold move to drop out of my university studies towards being a primary school teacher to now focus on DJing as a career.
My biggest residency i held though came in July 1998 when i was appointed the Saturday night DJ at The Norwood. It was 10pm - 4am and that lasted until Oct 2004. For those 6.5 years I had this goldmine of fun, providing pop, rnb and dance to a packed room of an awesome and devoted weekly crowd. Our biggest night there was when Groove Terminator played a guest set in early 2004. I had MC Craig Egan there as my side kick for most of that time and I always felt incredibly fortunate to have had such a popular club night i could DJ each weekend.

Also in 1998 I got involved co-hosting a weekly radio show on Adelaide's Dance Music station Fresh FM. The popularity of my show 3 years year later meant that the station offered my co-host L8s and I, an earlier time slot of Monday nights at 9pm and suddenly Mentazm was born. I ran this show every week as a dedicated volunteer, specialising in the rave sounds of Trance, Techno, NRG & Hardcore. We built up a huge following and for 3 years running the show was nominated for "Most Popular Radio Show" on the station. On our show we had some big internation rave acts on including Rob Gee, Andy Farley, Paul Elstak, Buzz Fuzz and many more!

In mid 2004 I was invited to join the promotions and marketing team at Heaven nightclub, particularly for the Thursday night clubnight Chemistry in which i had been a weekly punter at for around 7 years. Even though this only lasted for me for 12months, I got to work alongside some big international DJs including Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Lisa Lashes, Paul Glazby, Karim and many more. One career highlight was DJing at Two Tribes at The Showgrounds and being on the same bill as The Prodigy. (I still have the flyer for proof).
Also in 2004 I started Friday nights as "Hijinks" at the Highlander with Sam Mac and Higgo. Later we also had Cosi (from South Aussie with Cosi) join in every week on the fun. Sunday nights at the Grand also began for me that year Aug and ran til Sept 2008.

In late 2005 I was made a resident DJ at a new promising house music night called Venus which was upstairs at The Arkaba. This ran for just over 3 years with us having between 800-1000 people every Thursday night. Another career highlights happened during this time when as i was mixing on stage, I had a tap on the shoulder and the person said to me "Man you're a really good DJ with this crowd" and when i looked properly to who it was, it turned out to be Treach from US Hip Hop Legends Naughty by Nature! They were out for some drinks before playing an adelaide show the following night.

I had bunch of other short term residencies in the 2000's including "The Madhouse" at both BlackCat & The Alma, Friday nights at The Vic both in 2002 and again in 2007, the 6am Happy Hardcore sets upstairs at Downtown, Sunday mornings in the Joplins RnB room til 7am & Friday nights at The Hahndorf Inn. Because of the popularity of the Mentazm radio show, I also was included on the DJ line ups at rave events such as Ultraworld, Twice as Nice & HTFU at Heaven / HQ, Rise Dayclub in Lights Square at 5pm on Sundays, Dyewitness at St Pauls, Ultrasonic at The Old Queens Theatre, Enchanted Forest at Sedan & tonnes more.

In 2008 I was concerned that my DJ career might wind up as I had moved with my fiance to the Barossa. Because of the distance I'd be potentially be travelling each night to these various residencies & events, I ceased all my involvement in these nights. I felt though that I was at the top of my game and not ready at all to hang the headphones up. Because of the location of the Barossa, I seemed to automatically fall into doing weddings. This is when i transitioned from just DJ Ben to DJ Ben Events & things really changed...in surprising ways!

It wasn't until 2010 that i felt I could offer something extra unique and special to the weddings I was now busily doing. By then I had experienced way too many ammature / drunken uncle MCs, tumbling through the wedding receptions as a 'favour' to their niece brides to be the host of the night in a messy fashion. So i began offering MC services as an optional add on to my DJ services for an extra fee. With these nights i started including small crown-interactive segments and games. Within a year most engaged couples were asking for this to be included and suddenly this was the DJ Ben Events unique edge. I made this my focus to promote myself as an interactive DJ / MC / Host and by 2015 I'd won an award for SA's No. 1 Wedding MC as voted for based on ratings my weddings couples. I won this same award 6 out of the following 7 years plus earnt the No. 1 spot for Wedding MCs in Australia in 2019. In the last few years I have ranked three times in the Top 5 Wedding MCs in the country. These awards have 100% stemmed from my history of work as a DJ and for the last 10-12 years I have branded myself as not just a DJ or MC but as an entertainer.

In 2018 I was asked by a small family-run pub in the Barossa if I'd consider hosting a new weekly quiz night to which I did and now almost 6 years on it is still running strong at The Greenock Tavern and is a bunch of fun!

In 2021 The Exchange Hotel started having me 6-7 times a year for 90’s vs 00’s nights and these have all been really popular and a bunch of fun!

TONIGHT I have one of these nights to do to celebrate the last 30 years! DJ BEN'S 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY 90'S VS NOUGHTIES // SATURDAYS AT THE EXCHANGE

As it stands at 16.12.23 I have almost 50 weddings booked and still yet to happen, dating as far as early 2026. My tally of weddings has recently reached 600 weddings. I have performed weddings twice overseas (Hawaii and Fiji) and I've done one in every state of Australia except for Tassie and NT (it's my new goal to get those done too!). I've done around 1500 club nights, 550 radio episodes & recorded 300 DJ mixes. It’s been a HUGE part of my life being a DJ (plus the MC jobs that have come from that).

To me, today feels more exciting & special than a birthday because it’s commemorating an anniversary of something I pretty much created for myself and kept it going.

It’s definitely a very proud achievement!

I can't thank everyone because its literally 1000's of people including anyone who has ever danced on one of my dancefloors, to every wedding couple who have trusted in me to give their guests a super fun night. To anyone to reguarly listened to the Mentazm radio show to my fellow entertainment peers. You've all been incredibly supportive over the years and I'd love your help to keep this DJ going for a few more years still!
