Don’t worry! If you didn’t pinch your dahlia plants earlier, make sure when you are cutting your first central flower, cut deep into the plant (really deep, don’t be scared).
The plant will then start producing lateral stems, but it just delays the process. We want all the good stems from the start 🤓

I wish all of our tubers were in this early but we only managed to get in a couple of rows in at the end Sept/ early October. A warm end to Spring, some summer rain and voila 💁🏼♀️🌸

The ultimate beginner bloom!
✨ Direct sow them now (put the seed directly into your garden)
✨ Push them in approx 6mm deep
✨ Cover and keep moist until you see them sprout, it doesn’t take long in warm weather!
✨ Once they have grown and have 3-4 sets of true leaves pinch them (snip the centre out, creating longer and more flower stems) YAY!

It’s time! It’s dahlia planting time!
☀️ Make sure you pick a spot in your garden that has atleast 6-8 hours of full sun
🌱 add a good quality compost, aged manure and a balanced organic fertiliser to your soil before planting. If you don’t know where to start with this, head to your local nursery or farm shop (message me and I’ll tell you my favourites in Canberra)
🥔 Dahlia tubers come in all different shapes and sizes, the most important thing is that they have a growing eye. At this time of year some will be really easy to see, others can still be tricky.
Once your dahlia pops out of the ground in 2-3 weeks you can start watering. Watch out for slugs and snails, and any last frosts that might sneak up on us!
