~ PORTALS OF POWER ~

In a world increasingly defined by the frenetic pace of life and the endless distractions of technology, ecstatic dance stands out as a transformative practice that invites participants into a sacred space of movement, connection, and liberation. Much like stepping through a portal, ecstatic dance allows us to transcend the ordinary and explore the depths of our consciousness.

In this sacred space, our bodies become instruments of communication. The spontaneous movements we create mirror the rhythms of the universe, echoing the heartbeat of life itself. Just as a portal connects different worlds, ecstatic dance bridges the gap between our physical selves and the deeper aspects of our being. Each twist, turn, and sway is a dialogue with the unseen, allowing us to tap into emotions, memories, and energies that might otherwise remain dormant.

Ecstatic dance is more than just a physical practice; it’s a powerful portal to presence. Through movement, connection, and introspection, we access deeper states of consciousness, discover our true selves, and forge bonds with others. As we continue to explore this ecstatic journey, we find that each dance can lead us to new dimensions of understanding and fulfilment, reminding us of the magic that lies within and around us. So next time you step onto the dance floor, remember: you’re not just dancing; you’re traversing a sacred path to the infinite.

SET RECORDING IN COMMENTS

An incredible high vibing night at Ecstatic Dance Cairns, 2.0 launch in our new ‘home’ space on Greenslopes Street. This is the recording from the DJ software; I had intended to record my vocal mic too however I made a slight error with the Quicktime record and it didn’t record properly (doh not selecting the right input!), so the introduction guidelines, my varied use of instruments like tingsha bells, seed shell shaker/rattle, chakapa, koshi chimes, and ad lib singing to close on the last sound scape (I also made in Ableton btw, inspired after putting the set together and for something I could sing over!) didn’t record. That would have been nice ~ oh well and next time!

I love how this community alivens, awakens and inspires each other. How good global music in an intentionally clean space, is really the future! Giving thanks to the power of music in my own life, and dance, and the gift it is to awaken that and share this with others. Thank you! & Enjoy!

“Many of us are in the kind of existential pain that Douglas Adams once described as the ‘The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul’. Icebergs melt and wildfires blaze. Violence escalates, virus replicate. Life long activists for social and environmental justice speak in terms of hospice care for the species and the planet. With the world simultaneously burning and drowning, it might seem like nothing we do will matter very much in the end. But what if nothing could be further from the truth. What if it is not only what matters in the end but what matters in the spacious now, here in the short ark of history. Not just the what, but the how. Not just the big picture but noticing that the big picture is created by patterns in the smaller scale in the warmth of our flesh.” ~ Douglas Adams, Patterns in the Flesh

“Certain things grow in darkness - babies, dreams, roots… We often associate darkness with negativity, but darkness has both positive and negative sides. Dark times in our life might or might not contain inherent meaning; our view of this depends on our religious and spiritual perspectives. Yet there seems little doubt that dark times can provide opportunities for the student of the heart to learn. Even times that seem ravaged by loss and pain can be used as occasions for us to grow and mature. By approaching situations from the point of view of the student, we might learn from the dark.” ~ Jill Mellick, Coming Home to Myself

Dewi Sri is the Rice Goddess of Bali and Indonesia. She is also found similar across other Asian countries. As it goes, she was originally a beautiful princess who was killed to keep the peace in the heavens, and protect her chastity. When her body was buried in the ground, because of her innocence and divinity, from her grave grew some useful plants for mankind. The rice plant being one of them. For this she is considered to have dominion over this staple food and hence life, wealth and prosperity.

She is often depicted carrying a rice harvesting knife called a sickle, and her shrines decorated in snakes or snake-dragons called nagas. Hence also my dance with sickle represented by the feather.

When I heard these beautiful sounds I immediately heard Dewi Sri call to me. A mask I had collected from an extraordinary mask maker Wayan Muka in Bali several years ago, Wayan danced me her dance at his studio and it was a profound experience.

This is a free-form in spirited/ channeled dance. My dance is not choreographed but rather a somatic response to the music through the art form of embodied presence or ‘Listening’. I no way claim to know her cultural dances or disrespect to any part of the original custodians and peoples who may dance her dance. This is simply and offering from the Feminine Spirit feeling herself again too here on this and all lands Earth surface.

"The modern hero, the modern individual who dares to heed the call and seek the mansion of that presence with whom it is our whole destiny to be atoned, cannot, indeed must not, wait for his community to cast off its slough of pride, fear, rationalized avarice, and sanctified misunderstanding. "Live," Nietzsche says, "as though the day were here". It is not society that is to guide and save the creative hero, but precisely the reverse. And so every one of us shares the supreme ordeal - carries the cross of the redeemer - not in the bright moments of his tribe's great victories, but in the silences of his personal despair." - Joseph Campbell

Osophoria - based on the word 'Esophoria' which is a medical condition experienced as an inward deviation of the eye. Osphoria, meaning to look in upon the One. A collation since 2016, finished on new studio monitors in 2020. Please enjoy this journey in a preferably dark and calm setting with your best headphones or setup.

“The things we need most are the things we have become most afraid of, such as adventure, intimacy, and authentic communication. We avert our eyes and stick to comfortable topics. We hold it as a virtue to be private, to be discreet, so that no one sees our dirty laundry. We are uncomfortable with intimacy and connection, which are among the greatest of our unmet needs today. To be truly seen and heard, to be truly known, is a deep human need. Our hunger for it is so omnipresent, so much apart of our life experience, that we no more know what it is missing than a fish knows it is wet. We need more intimacy than nearly anyone considers normal. Always hungry for it, we seek solace and sustenance in the closest available substitutes: television, shopping, po*******hy, conspicuous consumption — anything to ease the hurt, to feel connected, or to project an image by which we might be seen or known, or at least see and know ourselves.”

In times of adversity - whether it be environmental, mental, or emotional…. the words that repeat on me personally particularly are ‘If one is not dancing for their life, then I don’t know what they are doing?’

Dance, and the communal process of dancing offers me a way to celebrate, and empower myself to feel with life, as opposed to taken by it. It gives me a way to burn into the beauty that is now, and the offering that is sacred ~ the heart, this life, in its full bodied human expression. It also gives me a way to connect to my community and a feeling of that transforms my own limitations, and struggles through a collective healing experience. All ancient cultures, take Africa for example, had these rituals. I believe free-form movement practices, like the practice of Ecstatic Dance for example, is the contemporary form of ritualised community ‘trance dance’ like these ancient and even modern earth-cultures still practice, which offer our communities - in time of hardship, a space for this process to occur.

We are gathering soon FRI 29 DEC COMM-UNITY OUTDOORS DANCE ~ Koah (All Welcome). DJ Sets by Spring Jaiah + Chilacayote to once again dance our lives awake.

Everything is such a subtle art form ~

Now my five senses

gather into a meaning

all acts, all presences;

and as a lily gathers

the elements together,

in me this dark and shining,

that stillness and that moving,

these shapes that spring from nothing,

become a rhythm that dances,

a pure design.

A couple months ago I was podcast interviewed by about “Evolving Communities Through Transformational Partying.” The Spotify link to listen to this is in my Linktree \\ link in comments below.

From host Lauren Renee Intimacy

“There is a never a part of our life journey that isn't relevant to our growth and lessons we need to learn for our soul's purpose. Dance, music and partying has been a core part of my life, and I've been down the paths of experiencing the bliss of ecstasis in ways that have been both potentially harmful and supportive to my wellbeing.

When we turn to a path of choosing our highest wellbeing, we often may believe it means giving up partying. Partying is associated with poisoning our bodies and spirits. Yet partying is a bridge between all of humanity, all walks of life can come together on a dance floor. Reviving the ritual of gathering community to reach ecstatic states through music and dance will support us to heal as a collective, and as global movements of transformational partying expands, artists are sharing New Earth frequencies worldwide.

In this episode I interview Ember 'Spring Jaiah' about her path as an ecstatic dance DJ, dancer and facilitator of transformational partying spaces. We go deep on this topic, as well as the value of being of present and in-service to your land and community through in-person events, and how you can start your own ecstatic dance event as well as:
- The magic of Far North Queensland (the land that has been holding me since after Season 1)
- Our shared journey’s in Bali and the island’s influence on the global ecstatic dance movement
- Turning your healing path into art and service
- Localising your leadership
- Bringing the healing experience back to simplicity, fun, connection and play
- Remembering that life is a party and taking party culture out of the shadows of disconnection to creative expression
- Healing through intimacy with aligned group frequency
- Shifting culture and consciousness through intentional music and sound
