We’ve been REALLY quiet lately. Mostly because we are still getting to know our new land and growing climate and also working on building the new house! Every spare minute lately is spent doing something and our social media presence has fallen short.

We promise to start sharing more soon. For now, here is a photo from one of the best views on the property! Sunsets here are beautiful.

We’ve been pretty quiet lately and that is because we have had A LOT going on! In 2019 we moved to Canada, started growing flowers, moved again a year later to a bigger piece of land, then in 2023 moved back to Australia to an EVEN bigger piece of land.

To say we are slightly exhausted is an understatement…..but we chose this path and can see that when we look back a year from now we will be beyond thankful for where we are at.

The present is a little overwhelming with sorting out water, shade houses, building a home, making new beds, connecting to a new community, cleaning up old farm land (lots of buried barbed wire), and flipping our growing schedule upside down.

We’re so thankful to each and everyone of you that continue to follow us on this journey, even when we are quiet. We promise we will start posting a LOT more in the New Year!

We wish you all an amazing Christmas holiday and hope you get to spend it with all of your loved ones.

THIS! We cannot agree more that healthy soil is the MOST important part of farming. You can purchase fancy seeds, expensive seedling mix, gizmos and gadgets, but if you do not have healthy soil, then you will not be successful.

These samples are the same soil type and have been in a corn-bean rotation for the past 20+ years, however their treatment has been substantially different. The soil on the left has not been tilled or had anhydrous ammonia applied for over 20 years and has had a cereal rye cover crop grown after harvest for the last 5 years. The soil on the right has been tilled each year, as well has had anhydrous ammonia applied in the fall. This picture was taken about 2 minutes after the samples were submerged in water. The tilled soil essentially “exploded” as soon as it entered the water. Repeated tillage has destroyed the structure of the soil, eliminating pore space and destroying the biological “glue” that helps hold soil together, and as a result the soil has collapsed. In contrast, due to minimal soil disturbance the tillage-free soil has excellent pore space and extensive biological activity, and as a result has provided the soil with a healthy structure that can withstand the impacts of water.

Within 5 minutes the tilled soil was completely gone, whereas the tillage-free soil remained almost entirely intact. We decided to see how long it could last and kept adding water to it (to keep up with evaporation) over the course of several weeks. We gave up after 6 weeks, in which the tillage-free soil sample was still about 95% intact.

We don’t just grow flowers here at Woods Goods! 🌷 We’ve also got an abundance of fruit and veggies on the go that are grown year round for our family! 🥦🍓 We grow lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, onions, garlic, carrots, beets, potatoes, blueberries, lots of herbs, pumpkins, peas, raspberries, etc.

I know they say that social media exchanges should be taken with a grain of salt, but this particular comment recently really got to me.

I provided advice to a question about flower farming, mentioning a business that has been my mentor since day 1. Not only has this business shared ALL of their knowledge freely, they promote other growers, constantly give back to the community and are a fierce entrepreneur that has grown from a small business to an internationally recognized brand.

The comment went something like this: “they can’t be trusted for their knowledge as they are not a horticulturist”.

Please continue to read my post below as to why I think this is utter and complete bu****it!

While having a horticulture degree can certainly provide valuable knowledge and skills for flower farming, it is not a strict requirement for success in the field. Here are a few reasons why a horticulture degree is not necessarily essential:

💐 Practical Experience: Hands-on experience and practical skills can be gained through working on a flower farm or participating in apprenticeships, internships, or workshops. Learning through direct experience allows individuals to acquire knowledge specific to flower farming techniques, soil management, pest control, and plant care.

💐 Networking: Building relationships within the flower farming community can provide access to valuable resources, mentorship, and guidance. Attending industry events, joining local gardening or farming associations, and engaging with fellow flower farmers can offer a wealth of knowledge and support.

💐 Continuous Learning: The field of horticulture is constantly evolving, and there are numerous resources available to learn about new techniques and best practices. Online courses, books, articles, and videos can provide a wealth of information for those interested in expanding their knowledge without pursuing a formal degree.

💐 Business Skills: While horticulture degrees often cover aspects of business management, such as marketing and financial planning, these skills can be acquired through alternative means. Independent learning, online courses, or seeking advice from business professionals can help aspiring flower farmers develop the necessary entrepreneurial skills.

💐 Passion and Dedication: Ultimately, a deep passion for flowers and a strong work ethic can be more important than formal education. Flower farming requires dedication, resilience, and the willingness to learn from both successes and failures. With passion, enthusiasm, and a commitment to ongoing improvement, individuals can build successful flower farming enterprises.
While a horticulture degree can be advantageous, it is not the sole determinant of success in the flower farming industry. Practical experience, networking, continuous learning, business skills, and a genuine love for flowers are equally important factors that can contribute to a flourishing flower farming business.

For all of you wanting to give your dreams a go, don’t EVER let others get you down!

Bittersweet news! 🥹

After almost 4 years of growing our flower business in Revy, we’re excited (and sad) to announce that we are moving to a new country….Sunshine Coast, Australia here we come! 🌞🏄‍♂️

This was one of the hardest decisions of our lives! As you all know, the community of Revelstoke is like no other we have ever experienced and in a short time we have made life long friends that we consider family. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your support and encouragement over the years. We will miss you all dearly. ❤️

We will be here until the end of July and it will be business as usual until we leave, so please continue to come say hi to us at the Farmers Market or come by the farm for a tour! We will be continuing the flower business overseas and hope that one day you can come and visit us there.

Much love, Tree and Joel

🌼💛 “Hello, I'm a dandelion.
A lot of people call me a w**d but I'm a friend and come to help you!

My flowers are the first food for insects after hibernation and unlike most other plants, I have pollen AND nectar, not merely one OR the other! And I am generous with them! 🤪😉
When you see me, remember that I'm the ONLY one who wants and can grow in that particular spot. Because:
Either the soil is too compact / hard / stomped and I want to loosen it for you with my roots.
Or there is too little calcium in the soil - don't worry, I will replenish that for you with the dying of my leaves.
Or the soil is too acidic. But I will also improve that for you if you give me the chance.
Or a mixture of the above reasons, of course. 😊
I'm here because your soil needs my help so best you let me grow without disturbing me! When everything is fixed, I will disappear again, I promise!
Are you trying to remove me prematurely with my root? However meticulous you are, I will return 2x as strong! Just until your soil is improved.
You can even tell by my growth at which stage my help is at. If my leaves are flat on the ground then I'm far from ready but if they all reach up then I'm already a long way on my way.
Something completely different is that I am 1 of the first bloomers in spring so I will announce spring / summer for you.
During the day when it's hot, I open my flowers but in the evening when it cools off I close them again quickly. In fact, if it's not hot enough during the day I won't open them at all!
My flowers are even delicious for you people by the way, did you know? I used to be called ′′honey (or gold) of the poor′′ because my flowers are so sweet in e.g. jam, sauce or salad! The internet is full of recipes - check them out.

But wait until the end of May or later before you start picking and even then, don't pick everything yet! The biodiversity and bees will be very grateful!”

Have a read if you love Dahlias!

You don’t need to divide your dahlia tubers.
You don’t need to ‘wake them up’.
You don’t need to plant them in little pots with the crowns poking out.

You CAN just store them until you chuck them in the ground, really. 😄

If you’ve been wondering what to do with your new tubers and when to plant them, I’m covering the basics and sharing my own tuber methods over on the blog.

Fuss about your dahlias as much as you wish or as little as you want! https://www.vanhacres.com/2023/03/20/when-and-how-to-plant-your-dahlias/ 🪴

🌸: Dahlias: ‘Snoho Sonia’, Mexico, Skipley Lois Jean, Chilson’s Pride, Ferncliff Illusion; cherry tomato vine
