When I set out to create a cutting garden for my floral studio, I kept a few reasons in mind.
I wanted it to be a beautiful, scented place to walk through, and see bees and pollinators attracted to the yard.
I wanted to be able to pick an abundant bouquet with varied florals and foliage everyday.
I wanted to understand the seasons better, because at the time I felt Iād become disconnected from them.
As I progressed with my floral design business, other things became important.
I wanted be able to include botanicals that were not sprayed with chemicals.
I wanted to value healthy, unusual stems as opposed to perfectly manicured ones, and I wanted those botanicals to be completely in season to reflect the time of year.
Getting to know where market flowers were grown was not easy. There is no country of origin labelling, no way for the average person to understand the chemicals used on what youāre handling. Over time I built a knowledge bank of the signals to look for to discern imported florals (that is another story!)
95% of the florals Iāve used over the last few years and more, have been locally grown. Most of those flowers hail from the area around my studio (peninsula/south east), Monbulk area and at times, Queensland and WA.
Iām happy that this featured bouquet is almost all grown on my suburban plot, with hydrangea, sweet pea, asparagus fern, foxglove and roses. The beautiful butterfly Delphinium and peonies are Vic grown. Iām learning a lot and Iām so glad that Iāve found clients and friends whoāve seen past cookie-cutter perfection and embrace a more natural, slow and meandering beauty with me!
Thanks for being here xo
