What a week! We celebrated attending our first face-to-face business events tradeshow for 2 years 🙌🏼 The bureau partnered with 12 operators to represent the region at Get Local Expo, securing strong leads for future events.

We had a bit of fun with a pop up bar showcasing Hemingway's Brewery craft beer and Devil's Thumb gin 🤤

Congratulations to prize winner, Inggrid Yapari from HelmsBriscoe, who was the lucky recipient of a trip to Cairns & Great Barrier Reef.

Ready, headset, go! You can get a taste of what it’s like to jump off Australia’s only bungy tower but keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, thanks to Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef’s new virtual reality headsets.

Three new Oculus headsets are available for attendees to try out at upcoming industry trade shows such as Get Local Expo, 15-16 February in Sydney and AIMEAsiaPacific, 21-23 March in Melbourne. The bureau invites anyone attending the events to drop by the destination stands.

The $150M 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 has seen Lizard Island receive its first delivery of coral IVF babies with nearly 10 million coral larvae released across four locations to help replenish reefs around the island.

Big shout out to the amazing teams from Southern Cross University, CSIRO and QUT (Queensland University of Technology) who are doing this world-first research. This is another example of our world-leading science helping build resilience in the reef’s marine ecosystems.

Tropic Wings Cairns Tours has partnered with climate leaders, Reforest. Now, when your delegates tour Cairns & Great Barrier Reef, or transfer to their gala dinner, they will be contributing to restoring natural landscapes to their native condition, reviving local ecosystems and tapping into the long history of indigenous skills and knowledge about land management. Reforest projects are registered with the Clean Energy Regulator and can be monitored through an interactive app with both individual and corporate accounts.

Multinational electric scooter and ride share company Beam has launched in Port Douglas with 150 e-scooters. The e-scooters are available to hire from selected partner locations, including Niramaya Villas & Spa and Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas. It's a welcome option for delegates to travel around the village in a sustainable manner, well-aligned with our region’s eco destination focus.

Industry veteran Leon Pink now leads the team as General Manager, while Executive Chef Winston Fong is at the helm of its beachside kitchen. For the month of October, Crystalbrook Collection celebrated Crystalbrook Sustainability Month. The initiative included bonuses for footprint-free stays, paid leave for staff to advocate for the planet, and the headline act ‘Your Moment for Change’. The resort group offered $10,000 in resort credits for ideas that will foster sustainability in the hospitality industry. The ‘Your Moment for Change’ winner will be announced on 15 November.

Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas newest addition, the CrocArena and the Swim with the Salties experience opened this month. The highly anticipated Queensland first will allow guests, the chance to be submerged into the croc’s territory. CrocArena is purpose built for Crocodile shows, including a massive grandstand with seating for 300 people, as well as an underwater viewing area to watch the feeding.

Built in 1984 and reimagined in 2021, The Benson Hotel has just opened in Cairns 👏

The property previously operated as the Rydges Plaza Hotel and has undergone a 10-week refurbishment to introduce art-deco inspired design elements. Ninety percent of materials for the refurbishment were sourced locally. A brand-new restaurant, poolside bar and expanded rooftop area complements the conference spaces and the 101 refreshed rooms.

What's new?...the $28 million redeveloped Cairns Esplanade Dining Precinct is completed! 🌴🥂 The engaging layout features new contemporary awnings that offer better weather protection, an extended dining area, modified and gently curving road alignment, inviting vertical gardens and grassed mounds, and extra footpaths to improve pedestrian connectivity.

The retention of one-way traffic along the Esplanade allows for safer pedestrian movements and will also reduce unwanted noise. The design of the road and footpath also allows the precinct to be easily transformed into a pedestrian-only space for major public events.

FUNDING AVAILABLE || Applications for Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef's Destination Funding Program is now available.

Funding of $100 per delegate is available for any event of three days or longer. Delegates must be attending the event in person with a minimum of 50 percent of the attendees from outside of the local government area of where the event is being held.

Events must be held in Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas from 01 October 2021 – 15 May 2022.
