This week Zookeeper Ben had the absolute privilege of sharing the experience of our friends with little warriors Charlie and Zara who are battling the rare genetic condition A-T. Ataxia- Telangiectasia (A-T) is a progressive condition that causes degeneration of the cerebellum in the brain, which means children who were once able to walk are confined to a wheelchair by the age of 10. A-T also weakens the immune system, causing respiratory infections. With the added complication of being unable to repair damaged DNA, children with A-T have a high incidence of cancer, which is sadly often fatal. Unfortunately, A-T sufferers have a limited life expectancy as there is currently no cure.
Wagga siblings Charlie, 9 and Zara Millar, 7 are two of the 40 children in Australia affected by this debilitating condition.
