27 November 2019.
On this day 5 years ago I did my last day as a corporate employee.

I was 25 weeks pregnant with my first baby (Miss Maeve) and I finished up, taking what was left of my long service leave from 14 years in state government and then would be taking a short mat leave and then it would be all business and baby 🥰

We didn’t know Covid was about to hit, we didn’t know what trials the event industry would go through, we didn’t know how much our lives would change with a baby, we didn’t know what being full time in the business would look like. But we did know it was the right time to go all in. Because I had planned for it, put money aside and done the math on what we needed as a family financially.

Within the next 12 months, despite Covid - my business grew in such a beautiful way, out of my home and into a workspace. I took it more seriously than I ever had before knowing it was now my sole income, knowing what kind of success I wanted it to be.

Looking back on the past 5 years - I’m so proud of where the business is and where I am at in this beautiful phase of life. Some of it was planned, and some of it has been the opportunities that have opened up before me as I’ve opened up to let them in. And that’s the beauty of small business ownership- one of the biggest personal development journeys you’ll ever go on (second only to parenting).

This morning my 2 year old son said ‘mummy we going wholesaler today?’

I have been feeling guilty that I’ve been working alot lately even on my ‘days off’ the days I ‘should’ be spending with Remi and I’m ‘dragging’ him around to the wholesaler and to the studio to get things sorted early for that week’s jobs.

But when I told him this morning that we weren’t going today, he said ‘aw, ok’ and was disappointed for a second. And I realised in that moment that he actually loves going to the wholesaler with me, that it’s something he looks forward to doing with me. Every time we go he gets excited to ‘help’ with something and he wants to hide behind all the flower bins and buckets and run through the cool room with the thrill of being cold and saying hello to all of the lovely staff who think he’s adorable.
And I realised I had been wrapping that joy, those special moments in guilt and negativity- when we actually both really enjoy doing this activity just the 2 of us.
I also realised how lucky he is to witness this phase of the business and be a part of it and how lucky I am to be able to build my dream around and alongside my children. And now that guilt is gone and I know I can replace it with excitement instead. The way we look at our ‘balance’ is all about perspective. Where does yours need shifting this week? 💋💋

Let’s take a bit of a dive into my first year of my floristry business 2016-2017:

A bit of a timeline:
Sept 2016 I did my first photoshoot - flower crowns for melbourne cup and styled a couple of small events and after that, I had flower crown orders or floral orders just about every week.

I did a small business development corporation course to get clear on some business knowledge.

In Mar 2017 - I did my first wedding photoshoot which gave me some social proof to promote. I also ran my first ever workshop teaching flower crown making.

In April 20217 I did my first two weddings (small orders bouquets and buttonholes) I think at this point I was also on a couple of wedding directories which generated a small bit of business.

In June 2017 I did my first expo.

In September I opened a Flower Bar at Kyilla Farmers Markets.

I styled and planned several corporate events, was part of about 5 photoshoots, did another floral short course, Melbourne cup orders, a whole lot of flower crowns, practiced, made flowers for every occasion, did my first 5 weddings (including my own), and including my first full wedding order.

It’s fair to say that I was everywhere in 2017. I went hard. All while having a full time job. But it paid off and in 2018 - the wedding work really kicked into gear.

In hindsight I didn’t realise how much I was doing - but I was so focussed and energy goes where focus flows!

This is 38.

This is also 8 years of floristry!

Ok, the cat’s out of the bag - it’s both of our birthdays!

You see, I always count the beginning of Maple & Wren as a floristry business from my 30th birthday.

On my 30th birthday I made myself a colourful crown to wear with my little black dress and silver heels to an intimate gathering of friends at Flour Factory. Don’t scoff, flower crowns were really having a moment at the time and everyone I met that night and all my FB and Instagram friends were all over it!

That week I got 2 orders for crowns and then the next week and the next, and the more I made the more orders I got and all of a sudden - what started as an events business became a floristry business, all from that moment. All from 1 crown on 1 birthday.

I’d only discovered my love of floristry about a year before and here I was flying my floral flag and diving in with both gloved hands!

If you’d 30 year old El that 8 years from now, she would have quit her corporate job, got married, had 2 children and have swapped the colourful heels and pencil skirt for trainers and leggings on the daily - she would NOT have believed you 🤦🏼‍♀️ But she might have believed that somehow, someway she’d be the CEO of her own company, and she’d be teaching others to do the same.

I’m so grateful for all of the iterations of myself I’ve had to go through to get to this one, 38 and thriving. 38 and loving the business and life I’ve created because of it. 38 and feeling like I’m on the precipice of a new era of me, a new era in what I can do, and a new era of confidence. And I’m definitely here for that!

So this is 38 - I think it’s going to be pretty great!

Owning a business isn’t like a 9 to 5, Mon-Fri job. But contrary to what Instagram would have you believe - it also doesn’t have to be a 24-7 gig either!

Owning a business is about having choice. It’s about creating flexibility. It’s about creating something for yourself that provides value in the world.

There’s nothing wrong with having a 9 to 5 job - it offers a specific and predictable lifestyle you can semi-rely on. I had a 9 to 5 for a long time and I’m grateful for everything I learnt in those 14 years. But it’s not for me any more.

And if that’s what you wanted you’d go and do that. But I know the reason you’re here is because you’re chasing something more, because there’s a pull in your soul to do things differently. To be the fish swimming in the other direction through the swarm.

So show up for that. Remember why you’re here and what’s brought you here and speak from your gut when you say - ‘this is what I want and I’m going to create the life I dream of doing it’ - because that my love is absolutely possible once you stake your claim on it.

To say that I am proud of this group from the Wedding Flowers 101 course would be a wild understatement. But it actually doesn’t matter whether I’m as proud as a clucky chook mum or not, what matters is that over the past 6 weeks they’ve built confidence and pride in themselves and for their own work. That’s the true magic and my biggest joy in watching a group truly bloom through our courses.
