I just wanna call BS on the stories society tells us about productive and lucrative work vs creative work AND the story you’re telling yourself about your creative career!

‘You’ll never make your time back’
‘You can’t make a living out of that’
‘There’s no money in that’
‘That’s a low paid industry’
‘I should charge less because it’s my creativity’
‘I should pay less because it’s from a home based business’
‘I could do it myself for that’
‘You’ll be a starving artist’
‘I could buy it from Kmart for less’

We’ve been told these things and heard other people say these things our whole lives - sometimes by well meaning people and sometimes by not so well@meaning people. I get it undoing those stories in your mind takes rewiring.

So let me fill your brain with some better phrases to help you here.

If you run it like a business - it’ll be a business. If you run it like a hobby, it’ll be a hobby.

I can charge for my time in making this beautiful piece and it will be worth my while.

I am allowed to be creative and make money.

There is alot of money in the world and I’m making some for myself.

I don’t have to lower the price just because 1 person can’t afford it or doesn’t see the value in it. They are not my ideal client.

The clients I’m creating for value what I do.

I am running a business, and businesses are meant to make money.

I can’t wait to pay for my next with this! (Eg ‘I can’t wait to pay for my next holiday with this’ or ‘I can’t wait to pay for my kids tuition with this’ or ‘I can’t wait to buy a house with this’)

Retraining your brain to focus on what’s possible instead of what’s not helps cement the confidence in yourself and your abilities to make this a thriving career.

PSA On 2025 pay rates for causal and freelance staff in Australia.

I used to look at freelancing as an arbitrary figure - and probably didn’t always get it right - but here’s what you should be considering when factoring in a freelancer or casual staff in 2025.

Floristry is not a highly paid industry on the whole, but we’re not out here working for peanuts either. 🙈

Freelancing rates should be higher than a standard casual rate, because you’re not paying super, the freelancer is, so the rate should really be at lease 12% higher than you’d pay a casual staff member. Then consider the skill level of the person and what you’re actually asking them to do on the job.

Freelancers also get to dictate their own rates (the innate beauty of contracting for sure) and you get to decide whether you’re willing to pay that rate for that person, doing the particular tasks you are requiring to be done.

But what’s it really costing you? $40/hour for a freelancer to assist for 4 hours is only $160 - which is a small fee to add to a bump in cost. So go add it! Factor in the support and then you can breathe easy.

Influenza B virus absolutely flattened me this week and my whole calendar had to be cancelled. My body ached, my head pounded, my throat scratched, my nose blocked and I slept on the couch all week so my husband wasn’t disturbed by my coughing fits. It was a doozy! And I’m STILL not 100% (but can sleep in the bed again finally 😮‍💨)

But what didn’t get flattened: my business.

The physical floralling and delivery of events we had on this week still went ahead beautifully, socials still got posted, new enquiries still came in and got responded to, proposals got written, site visits got arranged, new client meetings got set up, invoices got paid, client changes were made - All while I laid in my bed like a lethargic mess.

How? Because I have an amazing team who totally have this and can operate independently with all the guidance they need from me via WhatsApp and email.

This is what scaling is. This is why it matters if you’re making six figures or not because you can pay the people to do the things so you can rest when you’re sick or you need to go to your kid’s sports carnival/dance concert or you just want the day off.

As I started getting better I got bored … and all the space and silence was so good for getting things done - I finished our corporate Christmas guide and sent it out to our clients, I starting working on our 2026 marketing strategy, goals and budget and I made the space to connect with people I haven’t chatted to in a while on the gram.

And that’s also what scaling is - being able to outsource the daily doing of the work so you can focus on the strategy that BUILDS the business and brings you more of the kind of work you want to achieve your goals.
