This Artwork’s Story:
Created for Orientation, the artwork conveys a profound message of growth, guidance, and unity. It celebrates the students’ journey through their academic years, symbolised by intricate patterns that reflect their experiences and the wisdom imparted by their Elders at ECU.

The Elders, emphasise their deep cultural ties to the land and their pivotal role as teachers and mentors at through out the Mt. Lawley and Joondalup campuses, illustrating their shared experiences and collective journey.

This artwork created by artist Shannon Walding for Orientation is rich in symbolism and cultural significance. On the left, intricate patterns depict the students’ journey through school and the wisdom imparted by their Elders during their time at ECU. The Elders, placed near the cockatoo, emphasise their cultural ties and their roles as teachers and guardians.

On the right side, two connected campfires symbolise the unity between the Mt. Lawley and Joondalup campuses. The cockatoo, prominently positioned off-centre, stands out against the bright background, linking with the Ngoolark building’s exterior.
Bright yellows, inspired by the Cultural Reflection – Ngoolark video, integrate seamlessly with the building’s design.

This cohesive use of colour and symbolism creates a meaningful representation of the students’ journey, the Elders’ wisdom, and the community’s cultural heritage.

Keep the Fire Burning!

Known Associates collaborated with the talented to create this native floral ‘fire pit’ as the central feature to our meeting circle for the Meet the Buyer & Supplier Forum.

The fire represents the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite the challenges faced. It is a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

It’s time we tell you more about Ms Shannon Walding. Shan joined us as a trainee in 2023 and has now stepped into the full time role of Design and Admin Assistant. Not only is she supporting our team with all things events and design, Shan is an incredible Indigenous artist.

You can catch her original designs featured at ECU open days, West Tech Fest and more. We’re thrilled to enhance our team with this young superstar and even more proud to offer her opportunities to showcase her booming talent and hone her craft.
Let us know if we can enhance your next project with an original artwork.
