It was this evening, 4 years ago - that our Summer girl was diagnosed with Leukaemia! We may not have our farm menagerie anymore but thankfully we do have Summer❣️ It's been a long journey for our family and September (being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) will always have a huge impact! We remember the struggles, those who are amidst their cancer journey and especially those who have grown their wings... and we wish for better days ahead for all. Cancer is devastating on so many levels, it's a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual battle that reminds us to be the best we can be and grateful for every day!

Our first Orange Calendula flower bloomed Today❣️ May this be the beginning of many more❗😊 Calendula take approximately 45-60 days to bloom once seeds have germinated so as you can imagine, we are delighted to finally see this beauty emerge‼️

When seeds germinate and begin to grow, they're bright green and full of goodness 🌱- so why wouldn't they attract birds, bandicoots, possums and even field mice!? ✅Protecting new growth in a raised cage works well! As you can see, everything is growing fantastically! 💚Pictured 10 days after sowing - Snow Peas, Climbing Beans, Bush Cucumbers, Crystal Apple Cucumbers, Squash, Alyssum flowers and the "Sweetie" Tomatoes (not in pic) are looking great too❣️😃👌

You'd think at first glance this was a lovely cluster of Snapdragons but they're not... when a friend has spare Bougainvillea cuttings, why not try to propagate those too❗😃 Some are over a metre in length so many new plants can be made‼️😊👌

Why hello there non venomous Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus)! Glad you like my garden, I like not seeing your face next to my hand when moving pots off a rack though - thanks! There are lots of trees here, go be there like your name suggests! 😵‍💫😂

With Today's temp currently sitting at 27 and bright clear skies in view, thisafternoon is the perfect time to take some of our succulents from inside the home - outside! This reduces any excess moisture within the soil, mimics their true habitat and deters succulents from stretching for sunlight and becoming leggy! Allowing your indoor succies some direct sunlight is super good for them, particularly in the afternoon. Sunburn is less likely, leaves become more vibrant and colours can even change❣️😊

15.6 mils in the rain gauge after last night's storm! The seedlings and flowers growing (like our Dianthus pictured) will benefit lots from the rainwater as it contains more Nitrogen and Oxygen than tap water! Plus, because plant roots have received rainwater directly, they'll grow quicker too! 😊👌🩷

Snow peas are generally planted during Winter in South East Queensland however I planted more anyway on the second day of Spring. They usually germinate within 7-10 days but with these warmer temps and a good watering morning and arv, I've had some begin to sprout already❗ It's only been 3 days‼️ 😃👌🫛💚 The Tomatoes with expiry of 2016 are also growing well! I'm not expecting all of those to germinate but any that do are a bonus❗PLUS the Cornflowers planted on the 2nd of Sep have been propagated by heat mat indoors and there's a few sprouts there now too! 😁

Another beauty Spring planting day of 742 seeds / groupings sown in the same tray as appropriate companion plants! Pumpkins with Radishes, Sweet Corn with Carrots and Marigold flowers, Shallots with Alyssum flowers, Tomatoes with Calendula flowers, Cabbage with Watermelon and Sugarsnap Peas with Pak Choi! 😅

I've added a few (out of season) seeds Today, purely as they've either expired or are close to expiration date. I've also planted Butternut Pumpkin seeds that I saved myself. You'll see there's still tissue stuck to seeds sown and that's ok as it'll assist with moisture retention and act as a slight mulch during germination! 🩵😊👌

A little over a month ago I did a mass planting however had to leave seedlings unattended for over a week without water 😬 Needless to say, they dried out ...it's all good though - I've refreshed the top layer of soil, replanted in and who knows, some remaining older seeds may germinate with the new seeds planted (as I've sown companion plants in with those) ...AND perhaps some of the root systems from previous planting may revive! Stranger things have happened - we'll have to wait and see! 😃🤞💚

✅Seeds / groupings planted so far this Spring = 1267
Plus what I've direct sown into the garden beds‼️

🌱Only 40 hours since planting and if you look closely you'll see that the 🫛Snowpeas are already working their way to the surface ready to sprout AND the older seed stock with expiration date of ‼️2016 🍅"Sweetie" Cherry Tomato‼️seedlings have begun to emerge! 😃 I often plant up older seeds when I plant new stock so if they don't germinate, I have plenty of others that will and it still feels like a successful planting overall - and sometimes in the process, you just get lucky❣️😁👌 Gotta 💚 these warm Springtime evening temps!

Pressed Flowers (part 3) - Today, the first day of Spring, 2023 - a few of the kids & I spent some time picking some of our home grown flowers to press, including Nasturtiums, Violas, Pansies and Dianthus. It's a new press, flowers (some) of which we've never tried to press before - and we can't wait to see the result in a couple of weeks when we take a sneak peak❣️😃🤞

Pressed Flowers (part 2)

From Spring, almost 9 years ago - these are flowers picked and pressed by my 3 eldest kiddoes (then 7,6 & 5 years old) None pressed by the then 4, 3 or almost 2 year old that time, but all my kids were big on picking me flowers from the youngest age (thanks to their Daddy for teaching them to do so 😊 - Thankyou Steve❣️)

I remember the day we pressed these together very well! It was our first time using this flower press and I thought it would be a good project for our homeschooling. Memories were made here that will be treasured forever❣️ (And 9 years on from these floral pressings, Summer (our Eldest child and blessed Cancer survivor) is about to be certified as a qualified Florist)! 😃 W🧡W‼️

Pressed Flowers (part 1)
I thought I'd share this Today - being the first day of Spring... As I opened this lovely op shop find , I discovered flowers already pressed! Gypsophila, Fuchsias (feel free to ID others in the comments under pics if you like)!

It got me thinking who may have pressed these and why, and when and where? Could it have been a child beginning their first flower pressing project, or a Parent preserving their child's first flower pickings as a keepsake? Perhaps it was a momento from a loved one or friends garden, or from one's own? Maybe it's flowers and memories preserved from an outing or holiday? Were they Grandma's - with the intention of making into a card or a framed piece?

I can only assume that these pressed flowers were not a first attempt from the person... The flowers are placed onto the orange paper (top and bottom) with another layer of folded newspaper each side with then corrugated card each side too! I suspect the person had already experienced the grooves created upon flowers from the corrugated card and inserted the additional newspaper as a preventative from that happening again. Perhaps this would have been successful - if they were not kept hidden in the press for so long, or if the tension of the wing nuts had been different? Either way, it's a lesson learnt for me with my own trials & storage and for that I am thankful!

From where the press came from, I don't know, but I'm curious about the squirrels pictured as we don't have them here in Aus - so maybe, this press has travelled oceans to arrive here!?
Whoever the person, whatever the reason, these flowers pressed almost 20 years ago (judging by the newspaper clippings in between paper) - were pressed intentionally and found their way to me! - and now you❣️😊💐
