💫💕Mexican Food as a Love Language
“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” they say—well, in my case, it worked!

One of the first ways I connected with my husband’s culture was through food. Learning how to make tacos al pastor wasn’t just about impressing him (though his smile when he took his first bite was EVERYTHING). It was about creating a taste of home for him here in Australia and showing that I cared enough to make the effort.

But it wasn’t easy. Mexican food goes far beyond tacos and margaritas, and many of the ingredients weren’t readily available. I got creative, did my research, and learned along the way. Through cooking, I began to understand the significance of family, tradition, and celebration in Mexican culture.

When we went to Mexico I got to see tortillas made fresh in front of me! The tourist in me was so excited to see this! There is nothing like warm fresh nixtamal tortillas. The taste, the smell Delicioso! - The way we purchase them in Australia is so different. In Mexico you can buy warm stacks from the Tortilleria (Try saying that word ten times really fast 🤣)
Tortillas are so essential to Mexican life that many families still either buy these big stacks or make them fresh every day.

They are the Foundation of Mexican Cuisine – The Milpa and Nixtamalization
🌾🍽️ Mexican cuisine isn’t just about what’s on the plate—it’s about the centuries-old practices that connect the food to the land. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the milpa system, a traditional agricultural method used for thousands of years in Mexico.

The milpa is the sustainable practice of growing corn, beans, and squash together. 🌽🌱 These three ingredients aren’t just the staples of Mexican food—they’re essential to maintaining the balance of nutrients in the soil and in our bodies. 🌿

And let’s not forget nixtamalization—the ancient process of treating corn with lime to make tortillas. This technique is key to unlocking the nutrition in maize, which has sustained Mexican communities for generations. 🌽🔥
