I came across a post on an alumni page today celebrating the life of Tom Hunsinger. It’s old news to many, but for me—now halfway across the world and very much out of that scene—I’m not surprised I’m months behind.
Tom was my writing lecturer for my master’s at RADA. He’s not someone who became a constant in my life, but certainly left an impact for the time I spent under his tutelage. A dry-witted, quirky individual who always shared honest and valuable feedback. The first, and perhaps most potent, piece of feedback I received from him was for a reflective journal covering my learnings that semester. It lives embedded in my memory: “…not overly academic – but incredibly humorous.”
At the time, I took the academic jab as an injury and worked hard to prove the man wrong (which I did, gaining a First). But now, the real gem of that feedback holds the foundation for how I move through the world and perceive myself—maybe at times an overly inflated version, but we all have flaws 😬— with good humour.
Perhaps one day I’ll even be classed as dry-witted and quirky. That would be a legacy I’d be happy to leave behind.
Vale, Tom. May your transition be full and complete.
