A story about a door… and financial security

When I received this pic from I cried. This pic is more to me than a pretty branding photo.

See that door? That cute little French door, the door all the tradies building my studio laughed about. “You’ve got a garage door! You don’t need another door!” But I insisted. I needed that door.

When I moved away from retail floristry to focus on weddings I worked on my dining room table. Then I took over my mums double garage. Eventually I outgrew that and rented a commercial space. I hated paying someone’s else’s mortgage and we had to call the cops on the adjoining apartment more times than I care to remember. I said to my husband “I need my own studio”

I’d hit my mid 30s. Being self employed from 18 meant I had a pitiful superannuation account. I joked I married my super, but also knew as a wedding florist, I didn’t really have anything significant to sell when I was done. It worried me.

So I made a vision board. And that board had a custom floral studio. With a French door.

I started checking real estate ads and building my vision board. And one Saturday morning a property popped up. It was on a big block with a small house at the front. 4 mins from my home. We looked and my very level headed husband said “this is the one”. So we bought it. And we renovated a whole house for tenants to move in. Then we built a custom floral studio. We worked day and night. We went over budget and over schedule. It was crazy times.

But the day that door went in. I cried. It was my vision board in real life. It was all the sacrifices. The hard days. The difficult clients. It all built that studio. With the cute French door.

And one day, when I’m done. That will be my superannuation. That will be my reward. I made sure I had an end game. Something to bank on. Because I’ve worked damn hard, and deserve to have something to show for it. And realistically I won’t be able to sell my business.

So yes it’s a pretty photo. But it’s also so much more. And please, wedding florists, future proof yourself. Have an end game. Invest for when it’s time to hang up the snips. Future you will be grateful

You might remember I did a post on making bouquets of delicate blooms… well this is the most delicate of delicate. A full cosmos bouquet.

I was so happy to see it looking perfect in portraits! No dead, floppy cosmos!

What’s the secret?
🌼 good hydration. This bouquet was delivered in a water source and the bride was instructed to keep it in there until it was time to have prep photos
🌼processing. Each bloom was separated, stripped of excess foliage and blooms and kept in the fridge with room to breathe.
🌼 education. Our bride knew from her first consultation I was giving no guarantees on longevity. She knew it was delicate and to be careful.

So yes, super delicate bouquets are do-able! You just need to add a few extra steps to ensure they make it.

DON’T BE A LEAH.

Celebrate your wins.

Last week I was honored to win NSW wedding florist of the year. I popped it up on my stories. Placed the plaque on my desk and that was that.

Then my business coach asked, “why aren’t you advertising this?” And I admitted I felt like a w**k sharing it. I worried what people would think. I don’t like a fuss, in fact I suffer from shocking imposter syndrome (I get a double whammy of it being a creative with adhd🙄)

But in fact, I’m not an imposter. I won fair and square. The award was voted for by couples I’d worked with. They’d given their honest opinion and here we are.

So after a stern talking to from , a few firm voice messages from some dear friends, I am posting it. On both my pages. I am proud. I work really bloody hard and it’s nice to be recognized.

So don’t be me. CELEBRATE YOUR WINS!

I was chatting to a florist last week in her mentoring session about some marketing strategies to get her name out there. And she said “but I’m scared”

My reply “so you do it scared. The worst that can happen is someone says no. Nothing great, comes from easy”.

So much in business feels scary, overwhelming, hard. I have a bit of a rep of being an expert at hanging installations. But the first time a client asked me for one, I was absolutely terrified, whilst nodding my head yes.

I did it scared. I spoke to my brother who was a fabricator, I researched weight distribution, hanging points, rated chains and cables. Learnt that aluminum is strong but light.

Don’t let being scared hold you back. Ask the questions. Do the research. And do the thing.
