2024 Annual General Meeting of the Sprintcar Control Council of Australia.

The Sprintcar Control Council of Australia (SCCA) conducted their Annual General Meeting on May 25-26 in Tullamarine, Victoria.
Attended by all seven State Member Clubs, the AGM included many important discussions and decisions in regard to rules and elections for executive positions.

SCCA EXECUTIVE CHANGES
The SCCA wishes to announce that Jason McIver has been elected to the position of SCCA President, replacing the outgoing Kathy Kelly.

We thank Kathy for her tremendous work and achievements across her 10-year tenure as SCCA President, keeping the SCCA’s administration on track and being rightfully acknowledged as a Hall of Fame inductee during her time.

The SCCA also wishes to announce that Allan Bain has been elected to the position of SCCA National Technical Officer, replacing the outgoing Brad Hilder. We thank Brad for his efforts across the last two years in the role.

We also acknowledge the efforts of Gary Winterbottom as he vacates the Executive Officer position and welcome Mathew Cross who was appointed unopposed as Gary’s successor.

2026 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
SCCA congratulates Borderline Speedway, Mount Gambier in securing the 2026 410 Australian Sprintcar Championship on January 30th & 31st. SCCA also congratulates Hi Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway for securing the 2026 360-LS Australian Sprintcar Championship on March 13th and 14th.

MOTIONS CARRIED
The following motions were debated and carried for introduction into the 2024 / 2025 rulebook:
1. Lengthy discussions were had about the direction the SCCA should take with tyre compounds. All member states agreed that harder compound left, and right rear tyres are needed. SCCA have deferred making a final decision on the matter while the Technical Panel investigate the viability of making the change. Further updates will be given in due course.
2. Introduction of a concussion register with a set amount of diagnosed concussion events in a set time period referring the driver to be checked and cleared by a higher level of medical professional.
3. A second push start being allowed without penalty when a driver has had to stop before the race has taken the green flag. This is referring to situations when drivers have been asked to participate in hot laps or four wide laps before a race and have been caught up in an incident.
4. Qualifying lap results can now be excluded by the Chief Steward if it is deemed the driver used the infield with more than the left-hand front wheel of the car. This includes further definition of the pole line as infield barriers are now prohibited.
5. A further clarification of the Chief Steward having the power to declare a Closed Red, Partial Red and an Open Red and what each type of red flag situation entails.
6. An example of the infield Work Area will be added to define rules and procedures to be followed by drivers, teams and tracks should an infield Work Area be utilised.
7. The Pro Sprintcar category to now be called “360-LS Sprintcars”. The 360-LS Sprintcars sub-committee to assess and consider a range of approved alternate LS engine parts list before implementing. The 360-LS Sprintcar Australian Title will now have an increase of set prize money for 2027 and beyond.
8. Adjustment to the Australian Title point system to avoid multiple tied points placings working in with the tracks field capacity. An increase to the heat race capacity to 14 cars to be approved if needed.
9. Increased penalties for assault with an option for both fines and suspensions to be implemented concurrently if warranted after investigation.
10. SCCA to facilitate an upgraded online portal for driver and sprintcar registration and an upgrade to the current host website sprintcarworld.com.au. Both platforms will have a focus on user-friendly interfaces, fresh layouts and easier access for state member clubs to input content.
11. No increases to any SCCA fees but an increase of the Stewards Grants program to $5000 to help States officiate their sanctioned races.
12. An extensive traction control report was presented with evidence by Allan Bain with promising signs of being able to develop equipment to detect the devices on a Sprintcar. The SCCA have granted further funds to continue with research, reporting and developments.
13. State member clubs had great discussions about the need to start putting a viable leading national series together. This is something the SCCA executive will start to draft concepts for and start discussions with key stakeholders.

TELEVISION
Executive Officer Mathew Cross presented a report of the television coverage of the 2024 Australian Sprintcar Championship held at Premier Speedway which noted the following viewership statistics:
• 3 million+ minutes viewed for Night One.
• 5 million+ minutes viewed for Night Two.

The SCCA is eager to keep pursuing free to air coverage for future Australian Championships and will continue to analyse viewership statistics in order to compile proposals and business cases for further free to air coverage.

WINGLESS SPRINTS
The SCCA would like to thank Scott Yallop and John Slack for joining the meeting and providing representation for AWSR related motions. It was great to see how strong Wingless Sprint racing is progressing, with the announcement of their own national series. SCCA has agreed to grant requested funds to help facilitate a great moment in Wingless Sprint racing history.

In summary, State member clubs will reconvene at a Special General Meeting on a date to be confirmed to vote on constitutional changes of an executive restructure and engine specification changes recommendations from the 360-LS Sprintcar subcommittee.

The 2024 SCCA AGM was one of significant decision making and changes. We acknowledge those who have worked tirelessly to get sprintcar racing to its current point and accept the responsibility we all now have to continue to make decisions in the best interests of Sprintcar racing.

Here are the Final Series Standings for the 2023/24 RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series.

Congratulations to the top three: Trent Pigdon (TD Racing), George Eaton (EPM Sprintcar Team) and Corey Hunter.

And thank you to all of the drivers and the teams that participated - we saw some great battles on track this season, and we look forward to seeing many more in 24/25.

We would also like to thank RBH Group for sponsoring the series, in addition to all of the round sponsors that have made this possible.

And finally, a big thanks to all of the speedway clubs and their volunteers that have welcomed us this season - we can't wait to come back and entertain you all again next season.

We also couldn't do this without all of the SAWA officials that give up their time to ensure that this series can continue to provide a valuable contribution to the sport of sprintcar racing within the WA speedway community.

It’s Prestige Fibreglass Products Round 10 – the Season Finale of the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series – and the overall series championship comes down to the final event. Trent Pigdon started the night with a lead of only 48 points of George Eaton, with Corey Hunter sitting in third after moving past Jeremy Warren the night before. It is also the last race for Ryan Farrell who is set to retire at the end of the night – could it be a fairy tale ending with one last feature race win?

The teams had worked hard over night and during the morning to turn the cars around following the carnage in Bunbury. Unfortunately, the damage sustained in the Friday race would require Jake Pobjoy to withdraw, and Matt Watkins would also be a non-starter.

Trent would be once again doing double duties between the 410 and the 360 – but after claiming the WA Pro Sprintcar State Title a week ago, he was determined to also wrap up the overall series to cap off a stellar season in the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series.

The whole field was included in each heat race tonight which would make things interesting. George Eaton and Kyle Francis would line up on the front row of the first heat race, but it would be Kyle Francis that would make the most of the start with Eaton chasing hard. Behind them it was Jeremy Warren that was fending off Pigdon, and they would eventually cross the line in that order.

Heat 2 would see the retiring Ryan Farrell and Luke Mewett line up next to each other on the front row, with Jarrin Bielby and Craig Bottrell on the second row. Whilst Ryan got a great start, Bottrell drove around the outside of Mewett to drop into second whilst Pigdon started to make his move. Once Pigdon passed Mewett he set off after Farrell, but by that stage Ryan had checked out and ultimately finished almost 4.7 second ahead of Pigdon, with Mewett, Eaton and Bielby further back.
Ryan Farrell was turning back the clock in his last event – a heat race win and one more feature to go, with Ryan feeling completely comfortable in the car – could he pull it off? We were about to find out.

The feature race starting grid was released – Pigdon and Farrell would share the front row, with George Eaton starting out of P3 alongside Kyle Francis who was showing some great speed in the #58. Eaton is the only driver that could really take the overall Series away from Pigdon, whilst the two drivers that were fighting it out for P3 in the series – Jeremy Warren and Corey Hunter - were alongside each other on the third row. Unfortunately Joe Latham would not be taking the start due to an issue with the car that had occurred in the first heat race.

The track was very fast – being the first into turn one would be critical in getting the win, and Farrell and Pigdon both knew this. It would be Pigdon that would get the great start, heading into turn one ahead of Farrell, but he left the door open just a little, and Ryan didn’t need an invitation. The #95 swept down to the bottom and made the pass whilst exiting turn two, taking the race lead. Whilst all of this was happening Kyle Francis had moved into P3 whilst Warren and Hunter managed to get past Eaton. It would then be Warren and Hunter battling it out lap after lap.

Given the many race restarts encountered the night before, Night 2 of the Easter Trail was the complete opposite – and the pace was relentless. Eaton eventually picked his way through the squabbling Hunter and Warren and set his sight on Francis. Meanwhile, up the front, it was all Farrell with Pigdon following as they caught lapped traffic.

Eaton would eventually get past Francis, and that was the podium placings set – P1 for Ryan Farrell – the fairy tale was complete. The WA1 of Trent Pigdon came home in second place – but this was sufficient to wrap up the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series ahead of George Eaton who finished the final race on the podium in P3, with Kyle Francis having to settle for P4.

Behind them it was Warren that got the better of Hunter, but it wouldn’t be enough to reverse the series position change from the night before – Corey Hunter had managed to hold on to P3 in the Series, finishing only 3 points ahead of Warren at the conclusion of the season. Craig Bottrell, Luke Mewett and Gavin Noy would be the other finishers, with Jarrin Bielby finishing his night after 15 laps.

It was a thrilling conclusion to the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series, and it was evident for all to see that there are some great sprintcar drivers developing their craft in this exciting series. For now it is time to rest and recover from the season whilst we celebrate the career of Ryan Farrell and the rise of Trent Pigdon.

Congratulations Trent on earning the WA1 and taking out the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series for 2023/24.

Good Friday - Night 1 of the Easter Trail, and it’s off to Bunbury Speedway for the MJB Industries Pty Ltd Round 9 of the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series.

Trent Pigdon, the newly crowned Pro Sprintcar WA State Title winner was proudly running the WA1 which he earned less than a week ago in Pithara, and was keen to pick up where he left off.

With Hot Laps only tonight (no qualifying) – the initial session would be critical in getting to understand the often-tricky Bunbury track. It was clear from the get-go that the drivers would need to be careful through turns 3 and 4, with several cars getting very out of shape through that zone.

Craig Bottrell and Jarrin Bielby would line up on the front row of the first heat race, but it would be Bielby that would make the most of the start with Trent Pigdon who had started on the second row setting after him. The pace was quick, but Pigdon couldn’t catch Bielby. Behind them all of the drivers were still struggling through turns 3 and 4, a theme that would carry on throughout the night.

Heat 2 would see Luke Mewett and George Eaton line up next to each other on the front row, with Joe Latham and Corey Hunter on the second row. Ultimately it would be Eaton that would finish ahead of Mewett, with a fast finishing ‘Flyin’ Ryan’ Farrell making his way from a P5 start to take P3 and Jake Pobjoy in P4. Unfortunately for Corey Hunter he was disqualified for not coming to the scales – he didn’t hear the call due to a malfunction with his one-way.

It was a quick turn-around between heats, especially for those doing double duties, but Heat 3 would see Pobjoy and Joel Ettridge square off on the front row. Ettridge made a great start and took the lead upon exiting turn 2 for the first time, whilst behind him Matt Watkins who had started P3 ran it in deep on the entry to turn 3 trying to make it past Pobjoy but made contact with the #46 in the process which sent Pobjoy straight into the wall and rolling the car. Trent Pigdon would go on to claim the heat win, having started P6 and hunting down Ettridge (P2) and Corey Hunter (P3). Behind them it was Eaton, Watkins, Bottrell and Ed Trutwin.

Jeremy Warren and Gavin Noy started on the front row of heat 4, but it was never going to be quiet with ever-improving Kyle Francis and the about-to-retire Ryan Farrell just behind them on the second row. And it would be a case of Farrell showing what he is still capable of, taking the heat race win ahead of Warren and Francis. Bielby brought it home in P4 ahead of Noy, Mewett and Latham.

The feature race line up promised so much – Trent Pigdon and Ryan Farrell to share the front row, and George Eaton – who is the nearest to Pigdon in the Series Points- sitting just behind in P3. Pobjoy would be the only non-starter due to the earlier damage sustained.

The first start was aborted with the #95 of Farrell getting a little too eager to get the race started, but the restart would be a disaster for Farrell in his final Bunbury Speedway race. Whilst Pigdon took the lead, Farrell hit a rut and rolled heavily in turn 4. It was definitely not the send-off that he was looking for, especially given the car speed he still has. But he wasn’t the first to fall victim to the track in turns 3 and 4 – we were only just getting started!

Luke Mewett was also a first lap casualty, and would be joined by Jeremy Warren after only 2 laps completed, with Warren also coming to grief in the treacherous turn 3 and 4 zone. Ed Trutwin would only see another lap before retiring the car. The race would only start to settle to a rhythm following these incidents, and whilst it was Pigdon out front, Jarrin Bielby was chasing hard and showing great speed. Behind him it was George Eaton being chased by Kyle Francis who has now become quite comfortable in the Pro Sprintcar – even in the trying conditions.

The race came to another dramatic stop when Bielby went hard into the wall in between turns 3 and 4 – however, it wasn’t the track conditions that caught him out, it is believed that something broke on the car as it just didn’t turn and went straight on. It was an unfortunate end to the night after having completed 18 laps and showing such great promise. Expect to see Bielby up front a lot more often in the coming seasons.

With 7 laps left to run it was a matter of survival – and all of those still running would go on to finish. It would be Trent Pigdon claiming the win for the second week in a row, closely followed by George Eaton and Kyle Francis. It has been a good run for Kyle, having only joined the series half way through the season, and for Eaton it was a matter of sticking with Pigdon as the series is set to come to an end. Ettridge, Hunter, Latham, Bottrell, Watkins and Noy would be the only other finishers.

The focus now switches to the final race of the season tonight at the Perth Motorplex for the Prestige Fibreglass Products Round 10 of the RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series. It will be a tough morning with several teams required to undertake repairs before they can take to the track. Trent Pigdon has a slender 41-point lead over Georg Eaton, with Corey Hunter, with Corey Hunter now overtaking Jeremy Warren to sit in third spot.

Be sure to get along to the Perth Motorplex this afternoon to see who will take out the 2023-24 RBH Group SAWA Sprintcar Series.
