Mitchell Imaging & Photography deals with photo restoration, film scanning, professional printing, and image creation. Through a background in science and scientific photography, I have extensive knowledge in various imaging techniques and equipment, which allows me to create images under challenging circumstances and of difficult subject matter. My experience and training with various image manip

ulation software provides a service for image adjustments, the re-creation of damaged images, and quality print reproduction. My target markets include:
- The consumer sector - Providing a general photographic service that includes image manipulation and restoration, film scanning, and a general photography service with quality printing.
- Commercial, Industrial, and government parties requiring a specialist in image creation and problem solving. My background and training provides a greater understanding of various optical systems, lighting techniques, and industrial scientific imaging equipment. This includes an understanding and experience with such hardware as scanning electron microscopes, high-speed video systems, and Schlieren optical systems. I am capable of providing my customer with a product that is aesthetically pleasing, whilst being able to deliver a professional service to an employer concerned with image creation intended for data acquisition and analysis. Mitchell Imaging & Photography strives to provide a range of photographic and imaging solutions while maintaining a high quality product and service that is of a professional standard and competitively priced.

A selection of shots from around Queen Victoria Market, and Melbourne CBD. It's been ages since I've spent some time taking some street photographs around the CBD. I used a similar technique here as I have done in the past in SE Asia. Shot from the hip with high ISO and shutter speed on a fairly wide lens (28mm here) and cropped where necessary.

As gross as flies are I still find them really interesting close up. And of course, Bees rule. 🪰🐝

Not long ago I built a stand for scanning film using my mirrorless camera. It works wonderfully well, and also turns out it does a decent job photographing microscope slides. These images are at approx 7-7.5x magnification. The slides were borrowed from histology at work, and are stained cross sections of river reeds. Most of the shots here are white balanced with some contrast adjustment and sharpening. The black image has the colours inverted for a bit of fun!

I've been a little obsessed and on a bit of a rainforest mission of late. It's a phase I'm sure.
I have taken photographs here before but must have been at least 15 years ago. Possibly one of my favourite locations in the Otway National Park - Lower Kalimna falls. Only a short drive from Lorne, and an easy 6.5km return walk. I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't been!

Here's a selection of photographs from my recent trip to the top end. Most of these pics are from Kakadu, and Nitmiluk national parks. I spent a couple of mornings at sunrise around the Yellow Water Billabong and tributaries of the South Alligator River. The first morning onboard one of the cruises, and I decided I had to head back the following morning to explore on foot.

There's a few photos here from a helicopter around Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge), and some from a hike I did around the gorge that nearly killed me!

With ever evolving imaging editing software and AI noise reduction algorithms, it's fun to sometimes re-edit old photographs. Modern software now does an amazing job with non-destructive editing to bring more out of the original file than ever before. This photo was taken in 2015 when visiting Wilsons Promontory. With the naked eye the Aurora Australis appeared as light pollution might over a city in the distance. It wasn't until you took a long exposure that you could see all the vivid colour coming through. This was taken over approximately 20 mins.

The winding road into Piopiotahi / Milford Sound in New Zealand is just as stunning as the place itself. It's a little tricky to keep your eyes on the road at times. If you look closely you can see a tour bus in the lower right of the image. It's the best I could do to show some scale. The towering mountains were truly mind bending.

My Story, for now anyway...

After I completed my degree in Scientific photography, I started Mitchell Imaging & Photography as a freelance photographic business and provided a range of imaging and photographic services including film scanning and restoration, printing, commercial photography, and even wedding photography. Currently I’m employed full time at the University of Melbourne in the department of Anatomy and Neuroscience as an Imaging Technician, which involves a vast range of image creation and photography relating to medical and teaching applications. As such, Mitchell Imaging & Photography has become, for the time being, more a place to share the images taken in my free time than a fully functioning business. Or perhaps, an online business card and portfolio should I decide to reignite the freelance side of things. I actually really enjoy the fact that some of my photographic work remains a hobby. I have the two sides to my work... The technical imaging / medical / archival / commercial aspect that I do for work at the University, and my hobby to keep the passion burning. I love the process of photography almost more than I do the end result. I love that it drives me to get out into cities, or nature and look for new images. A great photograph is a fantastic reward, but it’s also just a bonus for me.

In recent years, photography has motivated and inspired me to travel and seek out new and exciting subject matter. Some may say that photography distracts you from experiencing the world around you. That you end up spending your time travelling looking through a viewfinder. I disagree. Although this may be true for some, I strongly believe that traveling with the desire to capture exciting new content makes me more acutely aware of my surroundings. It makes me look for, and appreciate the little details that I may have otherwise missed without my ‘photography brain’ in gear. For the most part the travel photography, and landscapes that I post on my website and page here are just for me. But I do love to share it with anyone who is interested as well. I have been told that I really should sell prints but I worry that turning this part of my photography into a business could possibly take away from the hobby side, that other side of my photography that inspires me and keeps me sharp. That doesn’t mean you’re not welcome to send me a message and purchase a print, but I don’t see myself officially opening up a ‘store’... at least for the time being.
