I’ve just planted out some Stock seedlings 🌱and have some extras. Stock is such a great long lasting cut flower and has a lovely peppery scent.
This is not the dwarf stock that you buy at a plant nursery, it is a tall growing branching variety, grown for the cut flower industry.

I also have some blue Tweedia seedlings ready.

This lot are all sold, I’ll have more Tweedia seedlings available soon. 🌱

One of a flower grower’s favourite sights in their flower patch is a ladybird. Even better is a heap of them! This has been a good season for ladybirds. Not great, but pretty good. Last year we noticed a massive decline in ladybird reproduction so it’s nice to have them back this year!
A favourite breeding ground for ladybirds is in the finished umbel flowers of the Daucus carota family including carrots and dill and parsley in the veggie garden and Ammi and Queen Anne’s lace in the flower beds.
Aphids also love to breed in these umbels so are a great food source for the ladybird larvae. Adult ladybirds can devour 50 aphids a day and their growing larvae can eat up to 200!
If you have ladybirds in your gardens you are pretty lucky!
1. Adult ladybirds mating alongside a mature larvae.
2. Adults, larvae and aphids in this finished carrot flower head.
3. A cluster of eggs.
4. A larvae munching on an aphid.
5. A larvae in a smorgasbord of aphids!
6. A young ladybird merged from pupae as pale yellow and develops her colour and spots within a few hours.

That’s a wrap on flowers for Summer / Autumn season 2024.
Thank you all for supporting our locally grown flowers and I’m very sorry to those who missed out towards the end of Summer. The scorching sun and lack of rain just got too much for the plants in the flower beds so we’ll give the beds a rest for a while…

Featured in this bunch is our Angie’s Fuchsia dahlia. We sold a heap of tubers last year and will hopefully have a few more for sale later in the year.
