Retreats Photography Retreats Photography by Jason Batey strives to provide affordable photography services to everyone. Jason will work with you. Loved photography my whole life!

Specialising in Real Estate Photography, AirBnB Photography, Commercial Product Shoots, Aerial Photography in and around Hobart. First started out taking astrophotos with a loan camera from high school (Pentax K1000) with some guidance from my photography teacher. Learnt darkroom techniques at high school and have had it as a hobby ever since. I then studied photography again at GV TAFE, more dark

room work and bought a bigger telescope. Got into digital (DSLRs) pretty much as soon as they became a thing - purchasing my first DSLR nearly 20 years ago. Working in advertising for a publishing company, I got to practice my hobby more for work, taking advertising shots for various customers and even doing to odd job for the local free weekly paper in Bendigo. I also worked for Sky & Space Magazine as an Events Editor, which was mainly photojournalism. During my Post-Graduate Studies at University, I worked as a research assistant/photographer on a project at Port Campbell National Park. Now living in Tasmania, I have been inspired by Aurora and have recently upgraded all my gear - my wife and I also run a holiday home management company so I have the opportunity to get into paid real estate work. I am also honing my Landscape skills and love doing time lapse and videography - living in Tasmania, how can you not!!! AirBnB, Expedia, Bookings.com, Agoda, etc etc all require nice clean shots so owners can promote their properties to the masses - My wife and I have extensive experience setting up OTA listings for many owners throughout Australia. As a freelance photographer, I am flexible and hardworking - knowing what works and what doesn't work is key here, where I stand out is not only being able to capture the right images, but also being able to advise which OTAs to use, and also the ability to upload, manage and maintain the listings. Something most photographers would not offer.

Out and about with Emma Sanders today from Retreats Tasmania we took the opportunity to test out my new Sony Australia 70-200mm f/2.8 GMII absolute joy to use! I said to Em I might need you for a couple of minutes, it only took 1/400th of a second lol this was the first and only shot! Sony A7R5, Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 at /2.8, 200mm, ISO100, 1/400s awesomeness 😍👊🥰

My equipment 'team' for Next Creative is now complete! Left to right; Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GMII has just arrived, Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GMII, Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM and on the Sony A7R5 is the amazing Ziess Tessar 16-35mm f/4. And in the background, one of my Retreats Prints fine art prints.

Change is as good as a holiday, don't get me wrong, I still love my Nikon kit but I am super delighted to be working for Izaak with Sony gear 😍😍😍

LIVE VIDEO 11th May 2024 starting 4:35am! 26 minutes of absolutely incredible Aurora display just now, raced to get the video captured on my Sony A7R5 using a 14mm f/1.8 Sony G-Master lense ISO 6400 - G4 storm conditions met, Kp8, Bz -46!!! The brightest and most incredible display I have ever seen! Naked eye red across the entire Southern Sky, beams almost directly overhead and random pulses!!! Fingers crossed the clouds clear for this evening. Stats 1920 x 1080 25p trying to keep the file reasonable lol 3.25GB (raw 4:2:0 8bit unedited) for 26 minutes from 4:35am to 5:01. Sorry about me chatting and waking up my wife, luckily she was super impressed! 😍 I usually don't tag either lol but feel free to share this spectacular footage!!!

Sneak peak at this gorgeous architectually designed palace in the tree tops, soon to be available for short stays with Retreats Tasmania 🥰 I utilised late evening light for the external shots and tasked Nightleo with the D2D editing - they've done an outstanding job 📸 All images are 3 shot 2 stop brackets, the shallow DoF shots are 1-shot through my Art 50 at f/1.4 all other shots are with the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 beast. Really can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy doing this kind of imaging package for our owners - it's a kind of magic to me 🥰🥰🥰

Earlier this month, Ukrainian artist Anna Mykhalchuk (Samchykivka Art) painted a colourful mural on a piano, in the style of a Ukrainian Samchykivka painting, at an event on the lawn of Parliament in Hobart.

While Anna painted, Australian pianist Kelvin Smith (A Piano of Tasmania) performed his version of the famous "Melody" by the Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk.

Kelvin dedicated his composition to a friend who died defending the country, near Kreminna in July this year.

The event, ‘With Ukraine in Our hearts’, was held to raise awareness of the ongoing war in Ukraine, and an opportunity for Australians to show their solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Gorgeous performance on Saturday by A Piano of Tasmania and Anna from Samchykivka Art - Anna's Art and Kelvin's music met seemlessly! This image was captured using a Nikon D7100 combined with a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 processed using Lightroom and Desaturated in Photoshop, then return the natural colours to the subjects using History Brush. I love the effect and hope it does justice to the final image.

Our Story

Loved photography my whole life! First started out taking astrophotos with a loan camera from high school (Pentax K1000) with some guidance from my photography teacher. Learnt darkroom techniques at high school and have had it as a hobby ever since. I then studied photography again at GV TAFE, more darkroom work and bought a bigger telescope. Working in advertising for a publishing company, I got to practice my hobby more for work, taking advertising shots for various customers and even doing to odd job for the local free weekly paper in Bendigo. Now living in Tasmania, I have been inspired by Aurora and have recently upgraded all my gear - my wife and I also run a holiday home management company so I have the opportunity to get into paid real estate work. I am also honing my Landscape skills and love doing time lapse and videography - living in Tasmania, how can you not!!!
