In my opinion, it's a very simple 3 step process that all whittles down to communication:Being very clear with communicating the following will ensure couples KNOW what they are signing up for so they are able to use a bit of their heads and a bit of their hearts to decide on their perfect venue.

1. Know the type of couples that you want to attract to your venue. Do you want DIY couples or luxe weddings or couples who want a massive party or ????

2. Know what these type of couples need in your package. Is this a wedding coordinator or items of furniture or staff or ??

3. Be upfront and very clear on your T&Cs.

Let's be honest - the price point of your venue's package is going to exclude a large chunk of couples because they can't / won't pay the amount you are asking or have preconceived ideas around that amount.

So if you feel that your venue is not attracting the type of couples you want, review your package price, ensure that the package matches this price point and show these couples that the day that they are dreaming of can be reality at your venue.

If you feel that your venue is not attracting the couples you want at your venue, reach out and let's chat. I have walked this path with multiple venues in the past and can help you too.

CAN YOU FEEL IT or is it just me?Like being squeezed too hard by your grandma, this time of the year forces us to juggle so much (and you know, like Grandma's hugs, we love all the things but it can suffocate us at times!!!)

It has been so lovely over the past few weeks to see suppliers pull together.
To make things happen for each other and to give a little grace when required.

So, whatever the coming month looks like for you - sending big hugs your way to make it through to the other side in one piece.

Here's hoping we can all continue to show our care and support for each other to make it happen.

And if you have anyone who has done exactly this for you, please go ahead and give them a shout out to show them some love xx

Good staff are hard to come by. So when you find them you don't want to let them go!MOST times, long serving staff is a sign that a business (or a boss) is doing something right towards their staff.

So what things have I seen that I believe are the secrets to keeping good staff?

* Clear communication and expectations by management,
* Acknowledgement when someone does something of note,
* Setting people up for success with adequate training and instructions,
* Establishing systems and procedures that place trust in staff to do their job to the best of their ability,
* Taking the time to build a connection with staff.

When there are so many other things pulling at you in the day, spending the time to focus on your staff may seem a waste.
BUT.... creating a positive culture at your venue where your staff are happy to come to work and deliver their very best for the customer will pay off in spades for your business.

A sneaky snap of these amazing humans who I had the pleasure of working with in past years. I miss seeing them!

It's no secret that the amount of red tape that every industry is jumping through is nuts, and the amount of rules and regulations that we need to be mindful of is extensive.So, what are some of these legal responsibilities that you need to consider?

* Venue related - fire safety, kitchen / health standards, adequate toilet numbers, emergency procedures, appropriate liquor licenses, adequate and correct insurance cover;
* Staff / Supplier related - noise rules, RSA certified, First Aid certificates, correct certification for working at heights, correct pay and working conditions.

And this is only scratching the surface!!

From my experience, getting professional advice from those in specialist fields ensures that you are meeting your legal responsibilities and not exposing you or your business to risk.

It truly is not worth doing this "half job Bob" (as we say in our house!!)

What are your thoughts?

MY SHORT ANSWER IS YES but....Weddings are emotional things and so many venues get booked because a couple falls in love with something at the venue. Often there's little head involved in the decision; it's very heart driven.

So why do I say "yes, but.."?

I think it is worth a venue hosting an expo if:
* the venue is not predominantly a wedding venue and you want to promote that the space is great for weddings;
* the venue does not have another way to attract couples to it, eg no restaurant or cellar door to bring people in and showcase food / bev offerings;
* the venue is in a place which is easy for a large number of couples to "pop" past.

In my experience, many couples struggle to visualise a venue set up for a wedding. So hosting an expo allows you to set the space for couples to easily picture themselves getting married in the space.

When couples can see and feel themselves in the space, they will find it hard to not book their day with you.

THESE LEGENDS NEED A SHOUT OUT STAT!In my role as a Wedding Venue Coordinator, this team has popped up on repeat.

From a venue perspective, they are incredibly easy to work with - respectful, organised, low maintenance, and just damn good humans.

From a couples' perspective - they are awesome at their craft. Able to read a crowd, easy to communicate with and know the best tunes to get a dancefloor heaving.

So a big shout out today to Deep DJ Co for just being legends in this industry.

Thanks for what you do and how you do it.

"OH WHAT A FUN JOB!!!"I cannot tell you the number of times that I have had this reply when I tell people I am a Wedding Coordinator. Like almost every. single. time.

But I didn't get into weddings because it was going to be "fun". Nor did I have aspirations since young to do this.

I have a long background in teaching - highschool Physical Education and Outdoor Education. And I LOVED it.
I loved having an impact. Helping. Caring. The banter. And riding the highs and lows with the kids. The challenge to engage and connect with individuals.

But when the time came to move on, there was just no other job that sparked this amount of joy in me. Scratched my itch to help, care and have an impact.

Until weddings came along.

My skill set and past experience slid into this role seamlessly and allowed me to help couples ease the stress at a time that has all the emotions.

So if you ask me is my job "fun" - it's probably not the word I would use to describe it.
But it 100% is fulfilling, challenging, busy, intense, emotional and a bit nuts at times.....

And I wouldn't have it any other way!!

Shout out to all my fellow wedding planners and coordinators out there. I tip my hat to you xx

ARE YOU SACRIFICING QUALITY BY TAKING ON TOO MUCH QUANTITY?Regardless of your business, there is only so many hours in the day. There are always things to do. Always people and things that need your attention.

Early on in my business journey someone said to me "How many couples do you want to work with?".
My answer was quickly "As many who want to book!" but I was left baffled by the question. What a ridiculous question!!!!

8 years on, I've had clarity with this question - there are only so many hours in my day, and with a self-expectation that I deliver the very best quality of work and care to my couples, there is definitely only so many couples I can work with before the quality declines.

If you are in the business of quantity - good luck to you. You do you.
But for me, the standard I hold myself to has a tipping point and I want to ensure I am hitting those home runs for my couples, not bagging doubles (sorry for the very heavy baseball / softball / tball lingo, but this is me ;) )

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this..... (or share my love of the game!!)

...... is that it is best handled when we remove all the emotions from the situation.Which is hard because conflicts stir up soooo many emotions within us - annoyance, disappointment, frustration, hurt.....

But weddings have so many emotions wrapped up in the day as it is, so dealing with the situation with an emotional reaction isn't helpful for anyone nor does it get the job done.

Next time you find yourself in an emotionally fueled situation, take a breath, put the emotion aside and come up with a plan to ensure you achieve your goal.

What's your biggest tip when it comes to managing tricky situations?

CHECK FIRSTWith privacy laws and people being cautious about their digital footprint, it comes as no surprise to me that not everyone wants photos of them plastered across the internet.
As someone who uses social media very sparingly - I get that!

So, for all venues and wedding suppliers I urge you to consider this before posting photos from a couples' wedding day.

And because I have had past discussions with concerned brides, grooms, parents, bridal party members and guests, these are now my 3 rules that I roll with when it comes to posting photos from my couples' wedding days.

What are your rules?

IN MY OPINION - Being a wedding supplier is like playing cricket.... It is one of the most individual team sports out there.Stay with me on this!

Every supplier involved in a wedding day works their butt off to deliver their very best product / service for the couple.
BUT in order to do so, they must work with the timings and logistics of every other supplier there on the day so that their delivery is coordinated in a way that allows everyone else to deliver their very best product / service.
So that the end result is one heck of a wedding day for the couple!

Often times it is the responsibility of the Wedding Planner or On The Day Coordinator to work these timings out. They have the overall picture of what needs to happen.
If there is neither of these people, often times the Venue Coordinator may assist with this.

Being able to work cohesively as a team is a vital skill for every wedding supplier. At the end of the day - don't we want to go to work and love being there?

I'm 150% full throttle with everything I do. What about you?But I've learnt that this industry will eat you up and spit you back out again when you go and give 150% all the time.

Which is tricky because, by nature, I'm a giver. A fixer. A people pleaser.

Establishing some boundaries with my work has been an absolute game changer for me as it means that when I'm working I can give my 150%. But when I'm not working, I can give my energy elsewhere.

And I really encourage you to do the same.

This may be boundaries around:
* venue access times on day prior, day of and day post weddings;
* available site visit times;
* contact hours;
* how couples can contact you.

Boundaries are so important to ensure we do not become burnout and resentful, as well as ensuring our longevity to offer our product / service to the world.

Have you set any boundaries in your biz? I'd love to hear what has worked for you.

FACT - Getting your wedding venue package right will ensure the longevity and profitability of your venue in this industry. It seems simple, right? But over the years I have venues get it SO wrong!!! The consequence being too many overly stressed couples, unhappy staff and frustrated vendors.
There is simply no way that this is a recipe for success.

One way to ensure that weddings at your venue don't wear you down, is to nail your wedding package.
To do this, it is essential that you have a solid understanding of your business as a whole and how weddings fit into this.
* Know the type of couples you want to attract
* Know the capabilities of your staff / onsite team
* Know the availability of your space around the other operations onsite
* Know what you have onsite to include in the package
* Know what couples are going to be drawn to at your venue.

WEDDINGS + CONFLICTWeddings are a super charged emotional event. It's a huge melting pot of family dynamics and personalities, expectations, and time / money investments.

So it's no wonder that relationships can be tested and conflict has the potential to arise.

In my experience, the best way to manage this is to try and avoid it in the first place.
To do so:
* review your communication processes - when, what, how
* develop your listening skills & learn how to be an active listener
* make time to get to know your clients well

Being PROACTIVE in our communication and building relationships should be our priority when working in this industry - isn't that what is at the heart of weddings anyway?

If you are keen to upskill how you do things or want to break into the wedding industry, you need to join and I inside our online course.
Next intake will be in the new year, but you can be ahead of the game by joining the waitlist.

THE GOOD SIDE OF COVIDThere's no denying, Covid was a right royal pain in the butt. It turned our industry on it's head and threw us every curveball imaginable. But I have to admit, from all the mess there has been a trend emerge that I am sure will continue for seasons to come.
It is the stance from couples that there are few "rules" when it comes to designing their wedding day.
and I have been chatting about this while filming our new online course. We hear less of "what SHOULD we do?" and more "can we do...?"

Yes, there are a few "rules" that still need to be adhered to:
* allowances for timing of elements,
* noise restrictions / venue requirements/etc,
* the legalities of your marriage,
but designing and structuring your day has become more about WHO the couple is and WHAT is important to them.

Have you seen an awesome example of this recently?

ONE OF MY FAVE TOOLS for maintaining my boundaries and maximising my productivity is .....CALENDLY

In my work with wedding venues, I deal with so many couples, which means loads of emails and meetings.

So, when I discovered the Calendly scheduler, it was a total gamechanger for me.

As someone who is a big people-pleaser, it allows me to set AND STICK TO my work/life boundaries. A huge win for me!

What tool do you use that helps you maintain your work/life boundaries?

PS I have the best job! Working with incredible couples, talented suppliers and amazing venues fills my cup every day.

I HAVE LOATHED SOCIAL MEDIA FOREVER.In fact, it is a bit of a standing joke amongst my friends.

So, when I started my business, I joined the social media movement VERY reluctantly. I knew I should have it but really didn't understand the purpose of it other than showing some pretty pictures.

But I "get it" more now.
I still don't love the over-polished BS, how much of a time suck that it can be and sadly, that it can be a trigger for some serious imposter syndrome for me.

However, I love that it can connect me to people:
* other suppliers in the industry,
* people looking for guidance and help,
* people who I have worked with in the past.

Every day I am trying to be more intentional with my use of social media which is helping me to accept it at my table ;)

Are you a lover or a hater?

PS Currently feeling grateful for social media, as on Monday I got to meet an industry gal who I have watched from afar for some time. Such a joy to meet and chat with her. Give me connections with like-minded people every day!

WHAT DO ALL THESE PEOPLE DO????My work offering Venue and Wedding Management services has gifted me the opportunity to work with some amazing venues across our state.

One thing that I have picked up is that every venue does things very differently and the people who work at the venue come with a variety of titles and tasks.
This may be:
* Venue Manager
* Functions Manager
* Wedding Coordinator etc

So for you as a supplier, and especially those On The Day Coordinators, what this looks like for you can be quite confusing and a little bit tricky when you walk in the door.

My advice? Reach out to the venue contact well in advance of the day to get a solid understanding of what roles are at the venue and their scope of work.

Ensuring you have this info before walking in the door allows you to be well-prepared for your tasks on the day to make it a very smooth operation for everyone involved.

This is just one tiny step in the preparation phase of a wedding day that Kiera and I share with you when you enroll in our new online course "Polished Perfection - The Art of Wedding Coordination".
Enrollments close this FRIDAY. Link in bio to grab one of the final few spots.
