Ever wonder what goes on behind the blooms? My 11-year-old daughter Bella is no stranger to the behind-the-scenes hustle of floristry—she’s been part of it since she could walk! With a few days off school, Bella joined me bright and early to help with some of the essential (and sometimes less glamorous) tasks. Starting with a 4am flower market run, she learned even more about choosing quality blooms over those past their prime. Then it was on to the not so glamours side of work—loading the van with organics, emptying bins, sorting soft plastics for recycling, and washing every bucket and vase so they’d be fresh for new flowers. From making tea and coffee for the team to sweeping the shop and conditioning flowers, Bella stepped in like a pro. She even took over our social media for a bit and greeted customers, all while learning more about our blooms, like which flowers can’t be mixed together—a true insider’s lesson! Bella has been my sidekick from the day she walk, tagging along even back when I ran my wedding flower business, she was dancing on reception floors while I set up wedding florals. Since we opened Hidden Florist Bella was just 3, she’s been coming to market runs, helping with clean-ups, learning how to print orders, and getting to know the unique quirks of each flower. Floristry isn’t always glamorous, but it’s rewarding.
