2014- 2017: In May 2014 while Channa was home from a swing at sea, he suffered a heart attack. He had three stents implanted and a few months recovery. During this time he has a long hard think about life and the direction it was taking. He was away from the family for 5 weeks at a time and it was taking a toll on all of us. One day he saw an ad for a market food stall ( Asian Street Food) for sale and we made the decision to forgo the highly paid but stressful job away from the family for an inconsistent income, with all the family! It definitely sounded easier in theory than what was the reality that was the 3:30am starts, long days in the heat or rain and big set ups and pack downs four days a week. But we were all together, the kids worked with us and somehow we struggled through and made it work. We enjoyed the market life and made so many wonderful friend's there, but we knew that we needed to have more stability and that there was a market for good ethnically inspired food outside of the markets. We were invited to be a permanent fixture at a brewery in Cooran and the private catering was beginning to build up and so we said goodbye to the markets.

2009-2014: We came home at the end of 2009 after handing over all of our projects to local management. It was nearly time for our eldest daughter Shaanti to go to high school and she wanted to go to a 'real' school instead of homeschooling as we'd done for the past six years. Channa went to work on a boat out of WA and we entered the FIFO life . Our youngest daughter Rohani was born in 2010 and the decision to stay based in Australia was made. We built a house in Coolum Beach and have been here ever since.

2005-2009: LEAP and Holidays with Purpose.
The next five years were probably some of the most meaningful and impactful in our lives. We spent the first 6 months in Bali refitting the Indo Jiwa and then headed up to Nias to assist the island communities there in the aftermath of the 2004 tsumani and March '05 earthquake. After the initial emergency response we set into motion a plan to help the islands recover and rebuild their economies. We built a virgin coconut oil factory, a fibreglass canoe building workshop and two preschools. We used the boat to run a programme called "Holidays with Purpose" where guests would come on a surf trip that contributed back to the communities, both financially and by giving a part of their day to help in the projects on land. We also hosted medical and dental teams visiting areas that had little or no health care. These were the hardest, most fulfilling and amazing years. Our kids were all part of the fun, from days spend playing in the ocean to helping in the preschools and even translating for the volunteers.

Happy anniversary Caitlin and Jesse! Their wedding 7 years ago was only the second wedding we catered. It was our first big wedding and I was so nervous. Channa set me up and left as he was catering at another location. I had our daughters Shaanti and Mahlia as well as their friends Lil and Josie helping in the kitchen and waiting on the guests. Somehow we pulled it off… everyone loved the food and I was buzzing for days…. I’ve been in love with catering weddings ever since!

By the end of 2003 we were ready to come home. The September 11th 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre had upended our furniture business and Channa didn’t want to keep going out to sea, leaving the family. We were all a bit homesick, so we made the difficult decision to move back to Australia. Channa set up an import business bringing in furniture and building products from Indonesia, travelled back and forth between the two countries, often staying with our friend Cookie in Bali. For years Channa had had a dream to have a surf charter boat that gave back to the local communities. Cookie had a boat and a similar dream… so together they hatched a plan to turn his boat, the Indo Jiwa, into a floating community development organisation… and so Local Empowerment Assistance Project -LEAP and Holidays with Purpose was born. We were working on setting up the project when the Boxing Day 2004 Tsunami hit Asia and we knew we had to go back and help the communities where we had lived and the people we loved….

Sarah and Jake’s micro wedding in the clouds at Petrichor Estate last week. We kept the party warm with hot canapés- spinach and feta boreks, mushroom arancini balls, scallops with lemon butter and Sicilian meatballs followed by slow cooked Mediterranean lamb and Moroccan chicken targine, salads, rice, flat breads, yogurt and tahini sauce with spicy harissa chilli.

Ella’s family organised an intimate 21st party in their beautiful home overlooking the canal. We took the pressure off by organising all the food so mum didn’t have to set foot in the kitchen and could enjoy the evening.

Drop off catering for a party on the @mvnoosaqueen today. Whatever way you want to cater your event we have something to suit your tastes and budget.

A beautiful backyard dinner party that reflected the personality and style of the hosts. The rain stopped for the main course and dinner under the frangipani tree was followed by dancing into the night.

Our Story

We are Channa and Ruby Senaratne. We live in Coolum Beach on the beautiful Sunshine Coast with our four children. Channa was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Australia with his family when he was 12 years old. To say that Sri Lankan’s are passionate about food would be an understatement....they are obsessed! Channa assisted his mother in her catering business while he was growing up and then later trained as a tandoori chef. In his early 20‘s he became a partner in the award winning Indian restaurant “Scheherazade” in Brisbane. After we were married in 1995 we went on our honeymoon to Indonesia and from there travelled throughout South East Asia and to Europe, including eight months in Turkey. We returned to Australia from our honeymoon 8 years later with three children in tow! We spent a further five years in Indonesia from 2005, where we ran a surf charter boat which also assisted island communities affected by the 2004 tsunami and earthquake.

Throughout our journey, food has always played an integral part. A few of our food adventures include running a small cafe on a remote island off the coast of Nias, cooking on luxury charter boats, training numerous local chefs and running a catering business in Padang. It goes without saying that throughout all of our travels we ate all kinds of weird and wonderful food from epic wedding banquets to street food of every possible description. It is our joy to share some of our experiences with you through the dishes we create and the menus we design together. So please join us on our journey....
