Let me tell you a little bit more about Channa, co owner and head chef. He was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Brisbane in 1974 ( 50 years ago!) when he was 12 years old. He first came up to the Sunshine Coast when he was 14 and discovered surfing, and he's been hooked ever since. He started his chef's apprenticeship at 19 and trained as a tandoori chef in Melbourne at the Phantom India, Australia's first Tandoori restaurant. He later become a partner in one of Brisbane's first upmarket Indian restaurants- Sheherazade and went on to win numerous awards including best ethnic restaurant in Queensland three years in a row....to be continued....

Journey Food Co. catered for my wedding. The quality of food was just fantastic - fresh, healthy, different, and a huge variety. We ordered a grazing table and finger food. Ruby was very flexible and helpful in the planning of our menu. All the food was exactly as described, and everything was delicious. Ruby and her team were super organised, and friendly, engaged with our guests, and cleaned up perfectly afterward. They served everything at just the right time. Our guests all complimented us about the food and their waiting service. Thank you, Ruby and your team you did a great job!

This month marks 10 years since we bought the Asian Street Food market stall at Eumundi and Noosa Farmers markets… what a wild ride it’s been…..We’ve reinvented ourselves a number of times, tried many different ways of doing food, some successful, others not, we’re constantly learning and growing and creating a life and a business that is distinctly “us”. We’ve met so many wonderful people along this road, had some great adventures and of course eaten and cooked ridiculous amount of great food. Thank you to all of our amazing family, customers, staff, industry friends and couples who have been with us along the way. You are the reason we do this. Looking forward to continuing this journey with you all!

This is us in 1998 in our little café on the island of Asu, in the Hinako group of islands off the coast of Nias, North Sumatra. The island had no electricity, no roads, no piped water…we had a well for water and and a generator. Pre mobile phones or internet, we'd have to send our shopping list with cash by fishing boat and local bus across the other side of Nias to the market to a stall and hope that we'd get everything and that the money wouldn't disappear...it never did! We catered to the surfers who would make the long trek to surf the epic left hand reef break that the island was known for. There were no other restaurants or cafés so the surfers would have to cook for themselves ...our pizzas, fish burgers and curries were very popular!

Our Story

We are Channa and Ruby Senaratne. We live in Coolum Beach on the beautiful Sunshine Coast with our four children. Channa was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Australia with his family when he was 12 years old. To say that Sri Lankan’s are passionate about food would be an understatement....they are obsessed! Channa assisted his mother in her catering business while he was growing up and then later trained as a tandoori chef. In his early 20‘s he became a partner in the award winning Indian restaurant “Scheherazade” in Brisbane. After we were married in 1995 we went on our honeymoon to Indonesia and from there travelled throughout South East Asia and to Europe, including eight months in Turkey. We returned to Australia from our honeymoon 8 years later with three children in tow! We spent a further five years in Indonesia from 2005, where we ran a surf charter boat which also assisted island communities affected by the 2004 tsunami and earthquake.

Throughout our journey, food has always played an integral part. A few of our food adventures include running a small cafe on a remote island off the coast of Nias, cooking on luxury charter boats, training numerous local chefs and running a catering business in Padang. It goes without saying that throughout all of our travels we ate all kinds of weird and wonderful food from epic wedding banquets to street food of every possible description. It is our joy to share some of our experiences with you through the dishes we create and the menus we design together. So please join us on our journey....
