When a business owner falls ill, it can have several ripple effects on the business. This which I discovered last year when I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease.
The lead up to the diagnosis was rough… hair loss, glossitis, loss of weight, severe anaemia, severe bowel movements, fatigue and the worst was the brain fog that coupled with severe anxiety attacks. I’ve always been fairly strong mentally but the anxiety attacks were the worst and I couldn’t understand what was happening to my body and my brain during this time and why it was. I sincerely appreciate those that struggle with mental health having gone through the first 6 months of 2024 battling brain anxiety and depression. Though getting a diagnosis changed everything and it’s amazing how what we feed into our bodies can have such a profound effect on our mental health. When you hear that someone has coeliac disease most people assume it’s an allergy to wheat when this is incorrect it’s actually an autoimmune disease where ingestion of gluten damages the small intestine… that vital organ for absorbing nutrients we need to think, move and live everyday. Consumption of gluten products is an absolute no go. The only cure is a life long clean and gluten free diet… which I have embraced whole heartedly.
Today my mind is clear, I’ve got my drive and full steam ahead attitude back, I’ve put weight back on and my hair has stopped falling out. 2025 is about delegating and succession planning for the business to ensure smooth and continued operations in times of need.

Approximately 3/4 cup of milk- I use almond milk
1/2 cup ice

Ok I’ve committed to day two… this time with my companion Cletus.
Yes I’m wearing the same shirt as yesterday🤣. But I was brought up to believe if it didn’t smell and had no marks spills or stains then it wasn’t dirty. I’m frugal in my laundry washing and that’s not a bad thing especially…. when it comes to being water wise, recycling and reusing. I don’t believe we should be wasting water on clothes washing if you’ve worn them for a day or less and they aren’t dirty at all …. Though that’s not what my teenager daughter believes!
Little does she know half the clothes she throws in the wash I simply just fold and place back in her draws. I even re-iron some.
Being frugal isn’t a bad thing especially in this economic climate. Whilst saving on water with laundry might be minimal in the scheme of things it’s a practice that is beneficial I believe in business.
This year has been extremely hard for my other business Queens Cocktail Bar… the interest rate rises in 2023 and 2024 have had a profound effect on bricks and mortar hospitality. Last year we kept the business alive by propping it up with Cocktail Queen income, but this is and was not sustainable… so we made the decision to close the doors…. I absolutely loved my venue that my partner and I lovingly built and hosted so many events but to survive (and that’s the mode we are now in) we have to let it go so we can concentrate on the continue build and franchise development of The Cocktail Queen.
Yes we are walking away with debt now from that business but I’m not upset nor annoyed because that’s business… that’s how it rolls…. You take the bad with the good years and you make it work. You pick yourself up again, you dust yourself off…. You position yourself around positively and you get innovative and creative! Sometimes you need to take two steps back to realign to go forward. And that’s what we are doing … and being a little frugal too along

Let’s not sugar coat it… 2024 was a difficult and trying year for hospitality and it’s the time that tests you the most in business… but it’s the time that brings out the most creativity and positivity in a person also.
