The disqualification of the NSW Highlanders Pipe Band Inc at the 2024 NSW State Pipe Band Championships has been overturned following a protest lodged by the band and the following investigation conducted by the NSW Branch Executive.
Unfortunately, the disqualification resulted from a series of administrative errors. Some band members participating under the trial dual registration rule were incorrectly recorded in the registration database. This error was overlooked when bands were asked to confirm their members' registration details. As a result, the Contest Supervisor relied on the inaccurate database information when making their ruling during the competition.
The NSW PBA Branch sincerely apologises for this mistake and has reversed the disqualification. Following a review of the results, the NSW Highlanders Pipe Band Inc have been awarded a tie for second place in Grade 4B.
The trial dual registration rule aims to encourage greater participation by players and bands in competitions. Despite this incident, we believe this goal was achieved at the NSW State Pipe Band Championships.
To prevent similar issues in future competitions:
- Bands and players will be required to confirm their registrations with the Contest Supervisor during sign-in at competitions.
- It remains mandatory for all bands and players to ensure their registrations are accurate at least 14 days before participating in a competition.
We apologise for the confusion caused and trust that this incident will not detract from the ongoing implementation of the trial rule in future events.
