They met online and soon found out their families were from neighbouring towns in India - a big tick of approval in our culture! A joyful ceremony for a fun-loving couple and an even more beautiful union of families. 🧡

In the past few months, I’ve had the honour of working with two beautiful brides who wanted to include a special tribute to their late mothers on their big day. It was truly touching to help them find meaningful ways to do that, and it reminded me of how we chose to honour my own parents at our wedding.

From framed photos, heartfelt prayers, and a surprise gesture from my partner’s family (a photo of my parents tucked into my bouquet), every detail held a special place in my heart. But what meant the most to us was this: both my sister and I included a dollar coin from our mum’s thaali in our own. These coins were part of the thaali tied around her neck by our dad during their wedding, worn throughout her marriage - and now they continue their journey with us in ours. ❤️

It might not be the traditional way a thaali is made for a bride in our Tamil and Hindu customs, but that was okay for us :).

If you’re planning a wedding and wondering how to remember someone special, I hope this helps spark an idea. Sometimes, the smallest things carry the most meaning.

Wedding favours carry a timeless tradition of gratitude, yet as times change, so do our practices.
In Tamil weddings, we gift palaharam (sweet and savory snacks) bags, cherished tokens of appreciation. Traditionally made just before the wedding, they’re now prepared weeks in advance for convenience, requiring individual/sealed packaging to maintain freshness.

As our awareness of sustainability grows, so does our responsibility to minimise waste.
Here are some ways to make your wedding favours more eco-friendly:

1. Opt for recyclable or biodegradable packaging to reduce landfill waste. While silk bags may be beautiful, only a handful are kept, with the rest ending up in landfills. Consider using boxes or bags made from recycled materials, boxes/bags that you believe are good keepsakes, or opt for materials that can be recycled.

2. Whenever possible, aim to have the palaharams made closer to the wedding date to maintain freshness, minimising the need for excessive packaging.

3. Organise a palaharam packing day, separating savory and sweet treats into two different biodegradable/recyclable packages to eliminate the use of plastic packaging for each individual item.

Let’s celebrate love while treading lightly on the planet. 🌱💕
