Introducing Leo the Lion-hearted!

Leo is an 8 year old off the track Standardbred who came to me at the end of June. His owner couldn't ride him anymore, and she was unable to sell him because he was too dangerous to ride. She described him as the most anxious and dangerous horse she'd ever owned.

I have been treating him on several fronts.

Physically I've given him Chiropractic and ulcer treatment, complimented with some extra feed and minerals to help him recover and gain weight.

Emotionally he's benefited from a safe and healthy herd environment, where he can sleep, graze, run, and roll in the mud! I noticed for the first few weeks, he spent a great deal of time sleeping as he was able to relax in the safety of my herd.

Training wise, I've started him through Dr Shelley Appleton's complete re-boot program, starting in the round pen. It's here we build trust, and he can learn to feel safe with me as I use consistent movements to get him focussed again. We are building a partnership.

I got to the stage where we'd worked through some major anxiety with mount and dismount, and I was able to walk and trot him on a loose rein.

At the beginning of August, I gave him two months off, and have just brought him back into the round yard again. We are starting back at the start with round penning unsaddled, and have progressed to adding the saddle yesterday.

This beautiful boy is blitzing it! He's the most soft and responsive Standardbred I've ever worked with, and boy does he have an amazing ground covering trot! Happy to say, that he also enjoys cantering, so I'm looking forward to experiencing that under saddle before too long.

Leo will be looking for a new, very special human partner, once I've completed his training.

We're still here!!!!!

Hello everyone!
Yes, we're still here, and I will attempt to make more use of this page to keep you updated with what's going on.

We decided to scrap doing hay, as it wasn't profitable for the time and expense we put into it. However, there's still plenty of activities going on, which includes plenty of horses as usual! More on that soon.

The other thing we decided to do, is make better use of our land to grow our own food. This included chickens and sheep. Of course there's always plenty of infrastructure to accommodate new projects, so that's kept us very busy this year.

For now, here's a lovely photo of my 3 year old Quarab x Stockhorse filly Ari, drinking from our dam. I never get tired of watching my horses enjoy their life here on Knoll Farm.
