Glass bowl ikebana arrangement inspired by Kengo Kuma’s Water/Glass Villa 🌊💧
The use of line as an element of design in Western style flower arrangements is very different compared to Japanese ikebana.
The line element of design in ikebana typically results in asymmetrical arrangements, whereas classic Western style arrangements are often symmetrical.
Here Ilse Beunen discusses the impact of asymmetry in ikebana.
🔻Asymmetry in Art and Ikebana🔻
Asymmetry in art refers to compositions where elements are unevenly distributed, creating a dynamic, interesting visual balance without being identical on both sides. This technique often evokes movement, tension, and a sense of spontaneity, challenging the viewer’s perception and inviting deeper engagement. In contrast to symmetry, asymmetry can make art more dynamic and visually stimulating.
Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, epitomizes asymmetry. Rooted in a deep appreciation of nature, It emphasizes harmony, balance, and simplicity.
Arrangements in Ikebana typically feature an asymmetrical layout, with lines and spaces meticulously examined to embody beauty and evoke profound emotions. This practice highlights the natural beauty of flowers and incorporates philosophical and spiritual elements, reflecting the impermanence and cyclical nature of life.
Asymmetry in Ikebana encourages mindfulness and appreciation of nature's subtleties, aligning with Zen principles and Japanese aesthetics.

When the Bride’s Mum Gives You a Thumbs Up!🤗
Growing up in an Asian family, I know how much the opinions of parents carry significant weight. So, when the mother of a wedding couple compliments my work, it truly speaks volume.🌸✨
Wattle - Acacia - Mimosa Flower
Your ray of sunshine ☀️ in winter ❄️
The wattle is one of my favourite flowers to use in an ikebana arrangement especially with a blue vase or container. There’s something about it that makes me feel really happy 😊.

The stems of the floral materials in a Sogetsu Nageire arrangement do not touch the bottom of the vase.
By doing so, we have better control over the display of the blooms, and can showcase them beautifully.
There are techniques we learn to achieve this, and the more we practise, the better we get at it.
Would you like to see which method I used for this arrangement? Let me know - leave a comment with the word “show”.
Hope you find some time to “ikebana” this weekend,
Gwyneth 🌿

I’ve Seen Wedding Couples Forget This When Planning an Outdoor Wedding!
Pro Tip: Allow Time for Vendor Set Up and Pack Down – and Don’t Forget… Photography!
When booking an outdoor venue, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of your big day. However, it’s essential to schedule ample time for your wedding vendors to set up and pack down before and after your ceremony. This ensures that every detail, from the floral arrangements to the seating, is flawless and stress-free.
💡 Why This Matters:
* Your vendors need time to create the perfect atmosphere that matches your vision.
* Proper timing allows photographers to capture every stunning detail and candid moment.
* Ensuring a smooth setup and takedown prevents any last-minute rushes or mishaps.
* It gives you peace of mind, knowing everything is handled with care and precision.
🌷 If you haven’t booked your wedding florist, send me a DM today to see if we’re a good fit. Let’s work together to plan a beautiful and seamless outdoor wedding. 💕

🌸 Discover the Heart Behind Flowers by Gwyneth 🌸
Hi, I’m Gwyneth, the lead floral designer and passionate owner of FLOWERS by GWYNETH based in Sydney, Australia.
My journey with flowers began with a deep appreciation for beauty and a love for creativity.
Perhaps it was my mum’s delight in posing amidst beautiful flowers or my late aunt’s stunning arrangements - I stumbled upon a unique way to express my artistic side through floral design.😊
I specialise in modern ikebana-inspired florals for those who love nature and simplicity. To my clients, family is important—they cherish the moments spent with loved ones and value creating an atmosphere that reflects this deep connection.
My mission? To help you celebrate milestone moments by creating a floral ambiance of understated beauty so you and your guests can enjoy these moments to the fullest.
Quality, integrity, and client experience are core values I’m committed to. It is my ultimate goal that I deliver the best flowers I can get my hands on and serve you well along the way. Which is why I only take on a certain number of events per year and work with my dream clients.
When I’m not crafting beautiful florals, you’ll find me taking a drive out of town, exploring the aisles of Bunnings and local plant nurseries, or unwinding with Asian dramas.
Let’s chat about flowers, dramas, or anything else that brings joy to your day!
I can’t wait to connect with you!🌿

Here, the artwork becomes the inspiration for this ikebana arrangement.
What I love about this Sogetsu lesson is how the artwork sparks new creative ideas, making the arrangement more than just decoration. It becomes an artistic space where ikebana and art merge beautifully.
Engaging in different fields nurtures a range of ideas for more creative ikebana. What activities do you engage in to fuel your creative ideas?

Ikebana-inspired wedding bouquet 💍💐
I wanted to explore the idea of a wedding bouquet inspired by ikebana philosophy with the amazing when I was in Japan, and it was an enlightening experience! 🌿
Unlike Western-style bouquets, which often focus on fullness and vibrant abundance, ikebana emphasises simplicity, balance, and the beauty of negative/empty space.
Each element is intentionally placed to create a light, airy, and serene arrangement, perfect for a couple seeking a touch of understated elegance on their special day.
Yuki guided me through the delicate process - in ikebana, less is truly more. The careful use of negative space highlights the natural beauty of each component, resulting in a bouquet that feels both peaceful and dynamic. Imagine walking down the aisle with a bouquet that tells a story of harmony and mindfulness.
If you’re looking for a bouquet style that stands out and is meaningful, consider the unique elegance of ikebana.
Let’s create something beautiful together for your unforgettable day! 🌸💫

🌿Embrace the courage to simplify in ikebana…
In Sogetsu Ikebana, we learn the art of creating simplified arrangements, trimming away the unnecessary to reveal the beauty of “less is more.”
As artists, we stand firm in our creative convictions, and sometimes that takes courage.

A slight variation to the ikebana arrangement in my recent post (swipe ⬅️ to see it again).
After changing the placements and removing a couple of the stems, the arrangement now looks different.
What do you think? Is there one you prefer more?
🌿❤️Native flowers are known for their long-lasting beauty! 🌿
In a vase arrangement, they can stay fresh for up to two weeks.
However, for a hand-carried bouquet, like a bridal bouquet, be mindful of the weight. Too many thick-stemmed flowers, like the stunning King Protea, can make the bouquet heavy. 💪😅
Choose a balance of flowers for both beauty and comfort!😊
🌿Nature has its own plans🌿
Reflecting on the quote “Every flower blooms in its own time” by Ken Petti, I recently learned firsthand how true this is.
During my trip to Japan, I was eagerly anticipating the full bloom of the cherry blossoms—a moment I had dreamt of for years. Strolling under a canopy of these delicate flowers was a top item on my bucket list.
However, nature had other plans. A sudden cold snap delayed the blossoms, and they wouldn’t be in full bloom until after I had returned home.
This experience reminded me that nature follows its own schedule, despite our best-laid plans.
As a wedding and event florist, I understand this unpredictability well.
While we may not always guarantee specific flowers for our wedding couples’ special day, rest assured we are dedicated to bringing your vision to life with the most beautiful, best-in-season blooms available.
Have a great week ahead!
Gwyneth 🌸
P.S. Perhaps the ikebanist in me still allows me to find beauty in the bare branches dotted with blossom buds, visible only when the tree isn’t in full bloom.
After all, beauty exists in every stage of nature’s cycle, reminding us to appreciate the subtle moments as much as the grand ones.
Pretty little posies… to be repurposed from the aisle to the reception tables 🌹❤️
I want my ikebana arrangements to look effortless, so anyone who sees them will feel like they can do it too!
Because no one should doubt they have creativity within them.🌿
Spreading the joy of ikebana, one person at a time,
Gwyneth 💕

What a honour to be part of a bride's special day - turning her beautifully handcrafted paper flowers into her bridal bouquet! Adding some dried flowers and foliage, the bouquet is fully wired. Super light to carry on the day. And if stored well afterwards, should last for a quite a while! ☺️
