How to make your wedding reception unforgettable

Over the years I have DJ’d thousands of weddings and I have come to know what makes a wedding reception great. Have a read below on our tips for making your special day unforgettable.

Tip 1 – Everyone knows what’s going on. This simple tip is key to a smooth night. Make sure that your MC and wedding DJ know the order of the evening and that they are all introduced prior to you arriving on the night. There is nothing worse than dinner coming out during a speech or the MC calls up the cake cutting and the DJ is not ready with music. If everyone knows what’s going on then your night is sure to be a success.

Tip 2 – Have your DJ play fun popular music to get the night rocking. Sure we know not many people listen to 500 miles or the Nutbush in their cars but when you pull out the old classics you are sure to have a packed dance floor and very happy guests that will be talking about your wedding for years to come. Most people don’t realise how important music is to a successful night. It truly sets the mood.

Tip 3 – The most important tip to a successful night is to stop and take 5 minutes with your new husband/wife. Just the two of you. The nights zips past and before you know it you are being swept off to your honeymoon. About half way through the night take the time to reflect on the day. Grab a drink and just sit down and enjoy the evening. Soak up the atmosphere for 5 minutes before getting back into it. This is one of the biggest regrets we hear from our brides and grooms. They wish they just stopped for 5 minutes at the reception. Make sure you take our advice on this.

The Perfect song for the Mother-Son and Father-Daughter dance

Finding the perfect song is crucial to devoting a dance to a mother or father. For a parent, it’s an emotional day having to see their baby get married. It’s important to assure parents that their child is still very much in their lives, even if they’ll be focused on their own family from now on.

My Girl – The Temptations
Everyone knows the eyes are on the bride for the big day, so why not devote the perfect song to her? If dancing isn’t your forte, My Girl is the easiest way tune to get into the rhythm and get heads bobbing.

Have I Told You Lately – Rod Stewart
If you haven’t told your son or daughter that you love them lately, Rod Stewart will help you do so. This tune is perfect for the tear-jerking slow dance of the night and may closely outshine the first dance!

Somewhere Over the Rainbow (What a Wonderful World) – Israel Kamakawiwoole
This is one sweet song that everyone in the room will know the lyrics to. This version is a beautiful way to remind your child that “the dreams that you dream of, once in a lullaby….really do come true”.

Count on Me – Bruno Mars
A perfect song choice for the closest of parents and children. Bruno Mars is a must for every wedding playlist, and with this comes an opportunity to fade into one of his best party tunes.

Unforgettable – Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole
The sweetest of choices for a father daughter dance, this perfect song will have everyone tearing up in no time. Lyrics like “unforgettable in every way and forever more, that’s how you’ll stay” perfectly captures a father’s everlasting love.

You Are the Sunshine of My Life - Stevie Wonder
A sweet song for your parents to dedicate a dance to you, Stevie Wonder’s classic can perfectly represent their love for you. If you have siblings, it’s the perfect way to remind them that you’re the favourite of the day!

Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
A slower and more chilled-out melody, Dreams is an unconventional choice but a crowd favourite. Being popular with both your mates and your parents generation, everyone will be thrilled to join in for a dance.

Daughters - John Mayer
Smooth wedding vocals and an acoustic tune will have this song choice leaning towards the sappy side. Father-daughter dances are incredibly emotional and nostalgic, so this the perfect song for the occasion.

Your DJ needs to be flexible and adaptable to keep a wedding dancefloor happy. Because wedding venues and wedding guests are diverse and unpredictable, you need a DJ to be flexible and adaptable, making quick decisions on the fly. And no matter what happens, the DJ needs to keep smiling. The DJ needs to look like there having fun even if the event turns chaotic, when the Best Man fractures his arm trying to breakdance, and the bride is in hysterics because someone spilled red wine all over her dress. A good DJ can save a wedding, lifting the vibe and keeping the crowd focused on the primary goal: having fun and creating a night to remember.

To Engaged Couples: 72% Of Brides Not Happy With Their Wedding DJ 🎤 🎧 🎼 🎹

Do I have your attention? I was reading over some internet articles and came across some startling statistics in regards to brides and grooms and how they actually felt "after" their wedding. If 72% of brides were not satisfied with their wedding DJ, does that mean that those brides had bad DJs? My answer to that question would be not necessarily. While there are certainly still some bad DJs out there, the real reason why nearly 3/4 of all brides polled were not happy is because they hired the wrong DJ or the wrong entertainment. Brides spend a lot of money on the most beautiful location and wedding venue, their food, and hire one of the finest photographers, but for whatever reason their wedding entertainment is still not given nearly the focus as the many other moving parts of their wedding day. In selecting your wedding entertainment, you have two options; bands or DJs. While bands generally trend higher in cost, a DJ can no longer be looked upon as a "cost-cutting" measure for your wedding. DJs have the ability to play many different types of music, and do much more than "just" play music, and don't take breaks. But I digress, this post was not about whether or not you should choose a band or DJ, it was to raise greater awareness toward choosing the entertainment more carefully for your wedding. It was to remind brides just how important the entertainment is and how hiring the wrong entertainment can derail your big day. You are getting married in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Every aspect of your wedding should be perfect, and this includes your entertainment.

One Week After the Wedding It Gets Worse

Perhaps she's had a little more time to reflect on how things went, but the percentage of brides who are unhappy with their wedding DJ / entertainment increases slightly to a staggering 78% roughly one week after her wedding day. If you ask most wedding planners and coordinators, they will tell you that the entertainment is one of the most integral parts to having the best wedding reception ever. It's a sad state of affairs if only 22% only of brides were totally happy with their wedding entertainment. I keep asking myself. "What's it going to take to make these percentages look a little better?" It's actually going to take a fundamental shift in how brides look at DJs and their entertainment and how they choose them for their wedding day.

All Wedding DJs Are Not Created Equal

Oftentimes, DJs are looked at as "products", but at the end of the day, professional wedding DJs provide a service. Unfortunately, they are all not created equal. Since this post is aimed at brides, here's a great example, and it actually involves your hair, which is a very important part of looking awesome on your wedding day. Your hair must look excellent for your wedding day. Do you want to go with a stylist who is experienced with a proven track record or the girl who just graduated from beauty school? Yes, you need to think about your entertainment the way you think about your hair. The equipment that a professional wedding DJ has purchased is their "product", but at the end of the day, being a wedding DJ is very much a "service-oriented" industry. One of the reasons that the DJ / wedding entertainment is looked at as a "product" is because brides are just thinking they are paying for the time at the venue, along with setup and breakdown at the event. But, professional wedding DJs work many hours behind the scenes before they even arrive at your wedding venue to perform. Check out some of the services they provide down below.

Music/Playlist Creation

Contrary to what you may have heard over the years, professional wedding DJs do not just show up with a box of CD's, some speakers and play music. If it were that easy, then everyone would be doing it. Well, I take that back. Sometimes I look around and it does feel like everyone is a DJ today. But before I go off on a tangent, let me get back on topic. A lot of brides I speak with are actually fairly surprised at how much preparation the DJ does behind the scenes to get prepared to properly execute a wedding. After all that legwork behind the scenes, it's truly one of the most rewarding things to see all the planning and preparation play out in front of me. It's a beautiful experience to see the emotions of the bride and groom and her family when the special dances occur. Seeing all those moments play out in front of me makes me quickly forget about all the extra hours put in to make sure those moments are special.

MC/Announcer

And you thought DJs only played music? The professional wedding DJs will keep the flow of your wedding reception going perfectly. There are several transitions during any given wedding reception. Usually those transitions occur between pre dinner drinks and going into dinner, and from dinner into dancing. The best wedding DJs are going to be able to read your crowd properly and play the proper music at the right times. For me personally, I will make as few or as many announcements as you need during your reception, but will NEVER take over your event Under ideal circumstances, each bride should hire the best wedding planner possible. At the bare minimum, each bride should hire a "day of" coordinator. I cannot stress enough that the professional voice. An annoying voice circulating through your wedding venue for 5 hours is likely to be a big downer on your special day.

Planning/Coordination

Under ideal circumstances, each bride should hire the best wedding planner possible. At the bare minimum, each bride should hire a "day of" coordinator. I cannot stress enough that the amount of stress in planning and getting prepared for your wedding will be significantly reduced if you hire a planner/coordinator. If you just got engaged, you should shop around for wedding planners just like you would do for your DJ. The price you pay for your wedding planner/ coordinator is priceless. However, if you want to forgo hiring a planner, a professional wedding DJ can assist with helping you create a basic timeline for your wedding day to make sure the flow of the day runs smooth. When you tell yourself that you cannot afford a wedding planner, imagine yourself arriving at your wedding venue (after having not slept all night because you were worried) at 5:30am to begin setting up your chairs and tables, and all the other décor. On your 10th anniversary, you'll look back on your wedding day and you'll be glad you invested in a professional wedding planner. You want to ALWAYS be happy on your wedding day, and not become a disgruntled bride "wishing that the day was over with".

Music Research & Production

There are times when edits need to be made to songs, especially if the couple has requested a song that may have expletives throughout it's lyrics. Some DJs do advise against playing songs of this nature, but if the couple insists, it's my goal personally to remain "clean" with your playlist, as it is terribly unprofessional to hear expletives coming out of the speakers when your grandmother is sitting next to you. In terms of research, professional wedding DJs will sometimes need to create playlists with music they don't have. This will involve additional research behind the scenes and possible extra purchases of music to ensure you get to hear everything you have requested, especially if you have a lot of "custom" songs that might be fairly obscure.

81% Of Wedding Guests Say "Entertainment" Is What They Remembered The Most

Much to the chagrin of some of the best wedding caterers, their special recipes is NOT what the guests are going to remember. They are going to remember how awesome it was to digest their delicious food on the dance floor in the presence of an amazing wedding DJ or band. After all the preparation and tension associated with getting ready for one of the biggest days of your life, it'll be most remembered with an exceptional mix of music created by one of the best wedding DJs. When you book your wedding with my company, I'll work with you every step of the way to make sure the music is perfect and your guests are still talking about it for many years later. Simply put, it's YOUR wedding, so the music should be about YOU.

Wedding DJs Are Not Equal". Be sure you hire a true professional wedding DJ and not an amateur.

1. Amateur DJs will use non-professional grade equipment.
2. Amateur DJs will most likely NOT offer to meet with you before your wedding.
3. Amateur DJs will not have the stellar online reputation and reviews and website.
4. Amateur DJs are more likely to double or triple book or event, and run the risk of not showing up to your wedding day!
5. Amateur DJs may not be set up on time (when your guests begin to arrive) and are likely to NOT have backup equipment.
6. Amateur DJs may have had a club gig the night before and will want to play their "own" music and not stick to your requests.
7. Amateur DJs will not know the importance of just "complimenting your reception", and instead will try to take over your event.
8. Amateur DJs will possibly invite prospective clients to YOUR wedding and use your wedding to try to sell their next gig.
9. Amateur DJs are more likely to drink alcohol at your wedding.

Conclusion

Thank you for making it to the end of another one of my blog posts. Sometimes I have to take a break from the multitude of music playlists I create for my clients on these blog posts and talk about more serious topics. Finding the best wedding DJ for your wedding is serious business and I want to make sure you make the right choice. The truth of the matter is I truly love being a professional wedding DJ and want to continue to spread that professionalism throughout one of the top wedding destinations in the country. You don't have a second chance to make a couple's wedding day the best ever, so I take being a professional wedding DJ pretty darn serious. You deserve nothing less than perfection for every single aspect of your wedding day. That being said, if you are planning a destination wedding from anywhere in the country and coming to Sydney in 2019 or beyond, I would love to meet you and talk to you about your wedding.

Master of Ceremonies 🎤🎤

We get lots of people asking if we MC or if its ok for a relative to MC their wedding.

So based on these questions we thought we would just try to get rid of the smoke and mirrors and explain in a little simple detail the differences.

The letters MC can mean so much. To some people it means this is the person who makes announcements and to some it is the person that wraps over the music played. In general you will find when using a relative, friend or staff from some venues you will just get someone who will just make announcements and introduce people for speeches. These people are not trained in most cases and yes they may be funny to some but sadly lack the experience on how to run and control your guests.

Announcers are exactly that, they announce what and when and who but they do it in a basic way. Now our favourite is the Master of Ceremonies, this person should be a Master and this person will be the person that will Master everything to do with your Reception. A true master of ceremonies will have had some form of training (some training is just done on the job over many years). If your Master of Ceremonies has undertaken training of some nature from an outside source it shows they are open to improve their skills and to learn new ideas and methods.

On the day we help coordinate everything that happens on the day by working closely with the venue and we take responsibility for assisting in time management. Also by getting to know you when we address people on the microphone we make it sound more personal and in many cases you will be asked is the DJ/MC a friend or relative? So when you are looking for a DJ/ MC please consider our Master of Ceremonies service as it can and will make all the difference.

We also offer Master of Ceremonies service only so if that is all you need we are happy to discuss your needs.

First Dance - Here are some ideas on selecting the perfect first dance song.

For most wedding receptions, this is the most important moment and often couples find it difficult to choose a song. We’ve got some creative tips to share with you.

Where should a couple start when it comes to selecting a song for their first dance? Choosing a song you both like is better than compromising, so have a discussion about songs you both like first. (Having said that, compromise is achievable we’ll cover this a bit later).

Think about songs that were meaningful to you both when you first got together not necessarily what was popular at the time, but songs of significance, e.g. from a movie or early memories of the relationship.

Some couples prefer to select lyrics of significance, that might be a good place to start. Even if it’s an upbeat song, there are always broken down (i.e. acoustic) versions to consider. Boyce Avenue are well known for their versions of popular love songs.

How on earth do you select a song if you have totally different music tastes from your partner? Because there are so many different versions of songs and covers, it’s possible to come up with something both parties like, for example, check out Triple J’s “Like a Version” albums where popular artists cover well known songs in a unique style. Don’t forget, not all first dances need to be slow waltzes. Increasingly we’re seeing couples choose more upbeat songs that have a special significance to them.

What if a couple like a song, but the lyrics are not romantic, would you suggest not choosing it? Not at all, this is about the couple, not the guests! If a song means something to a couple, they should go for it. The song may have been chosen because of an inside joke that the guests are not privy to, or it’s a song they heard repeatedly on a recent holiday.

How can you make the music you choose for your first dance stand out from the crowd? It’s about making a selection that’s unique to you, which is where our tips about selecting cover songs are handy. If you want to stand out, try not to select a top 40 song as these get overused, e.g. All Of Me – John Legend or Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran. However, if you do want to choose a recent chart topper and still stand out from the crowd, consider booking a live acoustic singer/guitarist to perform your song instead of the DJ playing it.

Generally after the first dance, the rest of the guests are supposed to join in and start the party, what are some top tips for making this happen seamlessly? Brief the bridal party beforehand to get up onto the dance floor at an agreed time (it depends on the couple, some only want the spotlight for a part of the song, after which the guests can join in).

Any tips for those couples that have two left feet, but would still like to share a first dance? Based on our experience, it’s about the couple sharing a moment before the party begins, and not about the dancing. In fact, choreographed dances often mean couples are preoccupied and concerned with getting the steps right, rather than enjoying this key moment of the wedding. If you’re concerned about your dancing, keep it really simple, and brief the DJ to start mixing into a new song after a minute or so, and get those guests on the dance floor!
