The $150,000 Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Oaks highlights the first of two huge days of racing to round out the Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival.

For the first time, the Oaks is being raced under lights on Friday night. 10 fillies have accepted for the 2100m Listed race.

The trifecta from the recent Hobart Cup headlines the 15 nominations for next Wednesday’s $250,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Launceston Cup.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Strawberry Rock will head to Launceston following his Hobart Cup victory and is aiming for a $150,000 bonus from Tasracing and Ladbrokes, should he be successful. The last horse to achieve the double was Eastender in 2019.

The highest-rated horse among the nominations is the likely favourite and Hobart Cup runner-up, Promises Kept, who’ll be allocated top weight when they are released on Thursday afternoon.

Tasmania’s hopes for its first locally trained victory in the Launceston Cup since Glass Warrior in 2021 are led by Asva, Distrustful Award, and Moveforlex, who come out of the Sydeston Cup run earlier this month. They are joined by Kaliuwaa Falls, the top local finisher in the Hobart Cup, who placed fifth.

After Jamie and Ben Melham enjoyed their trip to Hobart on Cup Day, each securing a win, Launceston eagerly anticipates welcoming star jockeys Damian Lane, Mark Zahra, and Robbie Dolan.

Having won aboard Chabaud in the Tasmanian Oaks in 2016, Zahra has secured the ride on Promises Kept in the Launceston Cup. Shane Foley, who has ridden for the two Tasmanian starts this campaign, will not be riding at the meeting.

Damian Lane will be particularly busy on Cup Day with feature rides aboard First Accused (Hellova Street Stakes), Snowdonia (3YO Classic), Crack the Shutters (Gold Sovereign Stakes), Jaguar Stone (Vamos Stakes) and Bello Beau (Royal Rambo).

2024 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Robbie Dolan is also well-known for his singing exploits and will be hot property off the racetrack, and as recently as last week, he was keen to secure a Cup ride.

With four black-type races on the 10-event card, Launceston Cup Day is arguably the peak race day for the year. Fields will be finalised on Friday morning, and the barrier draw for the Cup will be held during the Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Oaks race night in Launceston on Friday.

“We’ve given Raider’s Guide enough work at home after those runs at Launceston, so he should be in good shape.”

Tasmanian Hall of Fame trainer Gary Fahey is confident his champion, Raider’s Guide, is well and truly on track in an attempt to secure back-to-back victories in the Group 1 Rookie Rebel (600m) at The Meadows on Saturday night.

In the 22-year history of the invitation-only middle-distance feature, no greyhound has ever won the Rookie Rebel in consecutive years. However, No Shame and Jarick Bale have come so close to achieving this feat 👇

The countdown is on to the 2025 Nutrien Equine Tasmanian Harness Yearling Sale, with 30 lots in this year’s catalogue.

The sale, to be held on 1 March at Quercus Park, Carrick, from 15:00, is becoming more popular each year. The number of lots has increased since the 2024 sale, when 24 lots went under the hammer.

Successful sales graduates such as Mickey Oh, Iden Lady Lincoln, Vincenzo, and Carmen Emjay are terrific examples of the quality that the Tasmanian sale produces.

The Tasbred Bonus Scheme provides an extra incentive to invest at the sale, where the horses’ first win qualifies for a $10,000 bonus ($6,000 for the owner and $4,000 for the breeder). An additional $5,000 is awarded to the owner if that first win occurs during the horse’s two-year-old season.

The Sires’ Stakes Series also offers outstanding prize money and is restricted to Tasbred-only horses:

$60,000 Granny Smith (4YO Tasbred Mares)
$60,000 Raider Stakes (4YO Tasbred Entires & Geldings)
$60,000 Globe Derby (3YO Tasbred C**ts & Geldings)
$60,000 Bandbox (3YO Tasbred Fillies)
$60,000 Evicus (2YO Tasbred Fillies)
$60,000 Dandy Patch (2YO Tasbred C**ts & Geldings)

29 of the 30 lots this year are Tasbred eligible. The catalogue can be accessed here, and the sale will be streamed via the Tasracing website on Tasracing Live.

“His trial times proved he was smart, but that performance was outstanding.”

Bernardo-sired youngster, Cut The Cord, delivered a sensational winning performance on Thursday night, equalling the Hobart 340-metre track record for Latrobe trainer Ingrid Watkins.

At just his second career start, Cut The Cord blew past his previous trial times and opened his winning account in Hobart in a grade 6 event running 19.05 seconds from box 6.

Cut The Cord, by Bernardo out of Aeroplane Annie, scored by almost eight lengths over Town Stranger and Hellyer Sky as the $2.15 favourite 👇

“It was very emotional to see pop’s colours go past the line first."

Owner-breeder Calum Mohr hopes to win a race that will mean a lot to him at the Carrick Park meeting on Sunday afternoon, the Don Peck Memorial (2510m), honouring his grandfather.

Mohr breeds Ultimate Mod, which he races in partnership with his father, Andrew, in the up to 49 national rating event.

Ultimate Mod broke through for his maiden win in Hobart last start, with the Ultimate Machete entire carrying the Green and Pink Square racing silks that Peck used during his time in the sport 👇

“The time recorded on Tuesday was not surprising, he had previously trialed 29.50 around Launceston before his debut on the track. The trial was his first complete run around the track; he is a good railer and a brilliant chaser.”

Inherited Charm, Tasmania’s newest sprinting sensation, bolstered his already promising career with a low flying 29.32-second performance on debut around Launceston on Tuesday afternoon for Mangalore trainer Gary Fahey.

The son of Feral Franky, out of Fahey’s exceptional producer Sacred Shadow, lived up to the reports of his impressive trials leading up to the anticipated outing and made a bigger name for himself with his effort 👇

"We’re blessed to have a brilliant breeding ground that keeps producing Stakes horses year on year.”

Known as the sale that punches above its weight division, the 24/25 Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival has served as a timely reminder of the quality produced from the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Stakes winners Zany Girl (Needs Further x Isn’t Life Strange) and Likeakalix (Calyx x Like A Song) are recent examples of Tasmanian Magic Millions graduates as this year’s sale on Monday, 24 February at Quercus Park, Carrick approaches.
