Vale Chad Morgan: A True Australian Legend

It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a true Australian country music icon, Chad Morgan, who passed away on 1 January 2025 at the age of 91.

Fondly known as the Sheik of Scrubby Creek, Chad was a pioneer of Australian country music and a beloved larrikin who brought joy and laughter to fans across seven remarkable decades. From his humble beginnings in Wondai, Queensland, Chad's unforgettable voice and comedic charm captured the hearts of Australians, cementing his place as the king of country comedy.

Chad's illustrious career began in 1952 when his mates dared him to perform on Australia's Amateur Hour. That dare led to platinum and gold albums, countless live performances in venues big and small—from pubs and tents to the Sydney Opera House—and unforgettable hits like The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, I'm My Own Grandpa, and There's Life in the Old Dog Yet.

He was honoured with inductions into the Tamworth Hands of Fame and Roll of Renown, and in 2004, he received an OAM for his services to country music. His legacy was further celebrated with a permanent exhibition in Childers, which opened just last year.

Chad Morgan wasn’t just an entertainer—he was a cultural treasure, a cheeky smile under a safety-pinned hat, and a voice that will echo forever in the annals of Australian music history.

Our thoughts are with Chad’s family, friends, and the generations of fans who loved him. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate the legacy of a man who made us laugh, sing, and remember what it means to be Australian.

Rest easy, Chad. There’ll never be another like you. 💔
