We’re now in December which means we welcome Birak! This season is characterised by the rain easing off, warm weather beginning and the cool coastal afternoon breeze ☀️

While you’re travelling around The Margaret River Region, you might spot the moodja (Christmas tree) in full bloom with their beautiful golden flowers 🌼

At Tanah Marah, you’ll notice the birbool (paper bark trees) flowering and the wannang (peppermint flowers) have started to fall due to the lessening rain. Mugitj boonur (banksia tree) flowers are in full bloom and djilyara (bees) are flying around making the most of the sweet nectar 🐝

The nala ngankga (our sun) shines hotter and biritj (days) are longer - perfect for an afternoon on the Tanah Marah lake. At night, take a moment to look up at the cloudless morroo (dark skies) and enjoy some star (djinda) gazing ✨

Welcome to October! This month we welcome the season of Kambarang, where the rains have now eased and the days are warming up ☀️

You will hear young birds, like this handsome young blue wren, calling out for their parents and koolbardies (magpies) will be protecting their nests and babies 🪺

At Tanah Marah, you’ll see the kurulbrang (kangaroo paw), cowslip orchids and many other delicate wildflowers in bloom. With the warmer days joining us, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy a day out on the lake or a sunny afternoon bushwalk 🌼🧡

While exploring the region, you might notice the striking yellow blossoms of the Moodja tree. This tree is significant to Wadandi people as it is known as a spirit tree. It’s believed that each flower represents the spirit of a person that has passed on 💛

Last Djeran, the Undalup Association Inc. and the Undalup Wadandi Rangers visited Tanah Marah to teach and conduct cultural burns. The practice of cultural burning is a traditional way of land management and plays a vital role in preserving our country’s natural ecosystem and biodiversity.

Thanks to these teaching opportunities, the local community, fire authorities, DFES and DBCA are able to incorporate these traditional methods into mainstream burning practices.

We thank the Undalup Association and Undalup Wadandi Rangers for continuing to teach us how best to care for country.

Welcome to Djilba!

Known as the first spring, it’s the time of year yellow starts taking over our bushland 🌼
This season is also signified with shades of white and blue. It’s when heavy rains start to slow down to drizzly days 🌦️

During djilba, Djidi Djidi (W***y Wagtails) start becoming protective of their nests. Wadandi people would not hunt Yongar (Kangaroo) at this time as they have joeys to care for 🦘

At Tanah Marah, you will notice the beautiful cream blossoms of the wannang (peppermint trees). These blossoms are used as an indication of the warmer weather to come and a sign to prepare for the coming season.

We recently celebrated Tanah Marah turning 5! 🥳

In 2018 the Curtin family began calling Tanah Marah home. A year later, after some serious renovation and restoration, Tanah Marah opened their doors.

We’ve put together some before and after photos of the works that have happened over the years including
🎾 Tennis court resurfacing
🛠️ Verandah build on the reception centre
☀️ Installation of solar panels
🪧 New property signage
🌳Lots of garden maintenance and tree planting

The chalets have had such a major transformation we thought it was best to share that journey with you in our next blog post (coming soon)!

We’ve met so many incredible guests, many becoming close friends, and have had such wonderful support from so many local businesses. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

We can’t wait to see what the next 5 years bring ❤️

Makuru is upon us, which is the cold and wettest time of the year ☔️

At Tanah Marah this means the paddocks are greener, purple wildflowers start to bloom and the Maanitj (White Tail Cockatoo) are eating the closed ho**ey nuts which you’ll see dotted along the paths in the forest 🌿

It’s traditionally the season of fertility, so you might notice the ducks starting to pair up and bird calls are sounding a little different 🦆

If you’re coming to stay with us soon, don’t forget to pack an extra jumper and some puddle friendly footwear so you can get out and do some wet weather exploring! If you prefer to stay in, you can rug up in one of our robes and stay cosy in your chalet 🌧️
