Week 2 – Tri-Bot Base
Advanced Robotics
What I learned about today:
Action:
• Move Block
• Sound Block
Advanced:
• Random Block
About the Model:
The Base Tri-Bot is an excellent robot to explore navigational programming. The sample program randomly selects whether the robot will move forward or backwards, then randomly selects if it will turn right or left. Before each movement, it announces which way it will go.

Week 1 – Term 4 Advanced Robotics
The kids were off to a great start building the Rover Bot.
What I learned about today:
Action:
• Move Steering
o On for rotations
• Sound block
About the Model:
The Rover Bot plays sound files such as “forward” and “backward” as it moves forward and backward using the sound block. The Move steering block programs the model to move in a forward direction and then go backward.
Not too late to join the Thursday afternoon class, we have just one spot left.

Workshop: Introduction to EV3 Mindstorms Advanced Robotics
Date: Friday 11th October 2024
Time: 9am – 12pm
Location: Harrington Park

EV3 Mindstorms is a versatile and advanced robotics tool developed by LEGO!
The EV3 Mindstorms kit is a powerful tool that combines the fun of LEGO building with the educational aspects of robotics and programming, making it ideal for beginners.
The EV3 Mindstorms kit teaches kids how to build and program robots.
• Building Skills: It helps you learn how to put together different parts, like motors and sensors, to create a robot that can move and interact with its surroundings.
• Programming Basics: It introduces you to coding by allowing you to tell the robot what to do, like move forward, turn, or follow a line. You can do this using simple drag-and-drop blocks, so you don't need to know complicated coding languages.
• Problem-Solving: You learn how to solve problems by figuring out how to make the robot do what you want. For example, if the robot isn't moving correctly, you might need to adjust the design or change the program.
• Creativity: It encourages you to be creative by designing and building your own robots, making them do different tasks or even creating a robot for a specific purpose, like a robot that plays a game or a machine that sorts objects by colour.
Week 8 – Roller Racer
Advanced Robotics
What I learned about today:
Sensor:
• Touch Sensor
• Brick Buttons
Action:
• Wait Block
• Sound Block
Advanced:
• End Block
About the Model: The Roller Racer pits 2 balls against each other in a downhill race!
Week 8 – Battle Tops
Junior Robotics
What I learned about today:
Key Terms:
• Momentum
• Precession
• Elapsed time
Concepts:
• Tops are some of the oldest recognisable toys found on archeological sites.
• The more momentum a top has, the longer it will remain spinning.
• The elapsed time that a top spins can be found by counting up from the start
time to the end time.
• The precession is a slow circling of the rotation axis of a spinning body
around another line intersecting it.

Week 7 – Mindstorms After School Class
Basketball
What I learned about today:
Sensor:
• Touch Sensor
Action:
• Sound Block
Advanced:
• Loop
About the Model: This basketball game is like the ones you play in the arcade. Each “basket” scores 2 points, and is accompanied by a cheering crowd. When a “basket” is scored, a touch sensor is struck, so the game can keep track of your score. After 10 baskets are made, the game is over.

Week 6 – Analog Timer
Advanced Robotics
What I learned about today:
Sensor:
• Rotation sensor
Action:
• Sound Block
• Move Block
Advanced:
• Math functions
• Variables
About the Model:
An analog clock is one on which the numbers do not change.
The time is usually indicated by hands pointing to numbers or between them. Any clock with hands is an analog clock, but so are sundials and hourglasses. This analog timer is set by rotating the hand to a time. It then ticks down the time until it reaches 0, at which point an alarm sounds.
Each full turn equals 1 minute, so a quarter turn equals 15 seconds, etc. Analog timers can be used in sports to count down to the end of a round, end of a first half, end of the game, etc.
Week 5 – Mindstorms After School Class
Soccer Game
What we learned about today:
Sensor:
• Touch Sensor
Action:
• Sound Block
• Move Block
Advanced:
• Random Function
About the Model:
The soccer game is played by placing the steel ball on the play field and using your finger to flick it towards the goal. Watch out though, the goalie will try and block you! How it works: The touch sensor in the goal is struck by the ball, causing the computer to recognize that a goal has been scored. The goalie twirls in front of the goal, using a random function, so you never know what he is going to do next.

Week 4 – Mindstorms After School Class
"Trebuchet"
Today we learned about:
Sensors:
• Brick Buttons
Action:
• Large Motor Block
• Wait Blocks
Advanced:
• Loops
• Sound Functions
About the Model:
This Trebuchet is a modern take on a medieval siege engine. A Trebuchet is a type of catapult that uses a heavy counterweight to throw its projectiles. Pull the arm back into the set position, lock it in place and load your projectile. Press the brick button, and you’ll hear a warning tone alert you before the arm is released.

Our sold-out EV3 Mindstorms class was an incredible success yesterday!
Miss Caitlyn and Michelle led an exceptional session where kids were completely captivated and thrilled to build the Gymnast. The excitement and enthusiasm were palpable! Don't miss out—check out the video to see the action for yourself!
LEGO® MINDSTORMS EV3 Robotics represents the pinnacle of educational technology. Students are not only engaged but also inspired as they leverage the latest generation of motors, sensors, and software. With the ability to program their commands directly into the intelligent brick, the learning possibilities are endless!
Week 1, Junior Robotics at Harrington Park
Today’ build: Three in a Row
What we learned about today:
Key Terms: Probability, Certain & Impossible
Concepts:
• The probability or likelihood of something can be certain, impossible or
somewhere in between.
• One way to test the probability of something is to repeat an action multiple
times and calculate how many times the desired outcome occurred.

The final session of this term involved the children constructing the Hatching Chick.
During the class, we delved into topics such as life cycles, vertebrates, invertebrates, and biology. Witnessing the children both learn and enjoy themselves with Lego bricks throughout the term was truly delightful.
I eagerly anticipate the start of Term 2, with spots set to open next month.
