What a thrill to marry Julia and Julie on the 26th anniversary of them first meeting. Both have had distinguished academic careers. It was great to be able to stay for a magnificent lunch and to help them celebrate with a small group of family and friends. I taught Julia’s sister at Bordertown so it was great to catch up with her and other members of the family. Congratulations to both of you!

It’d be nice to think everyone in the q***r community can be out and proud. But for many, even in 2024, it’s still not safe for them to be so. I’m always grateful when couples who are deeply closeted ask me to marry them - especially if they ask to marry in my backyard where absolutely no one can see them. Couples renew their vows for a range of reasons: some couples renew their vows because they’ve been through a rough patch and they just want to celebrate coming out the other end. Others renew their vows to mark a certain anniversary or birthday. Others renew their vows to signal to each other and their family and friends that they are still as crazily in love with each other as they were on their wedding day. And others renew their vows, to have the celebration with everyone that they couldn’t have on their wedding day because of a range of circumstances. For Pan and Jody it was a combo of all these factors. Such an emotional time for both of them, surrounded by a heap of people who love them to bits!!

Couples renew their vows for a range of reasons: some couples renew their vows because they’ve been through a rough patch and they just want to celebrate coming out the other end. Others renew their vows to mark a certain anniversary or birthday. What was your favourite book, growing up?​​​​​​​​

Mine was a book about the evolution of aircraft. We’d have to send off for a sticker illustration that took the reader through the ages and stages of aircraft. And there was a detailed description that fitted each sticker. I remember reading and re-reading that book countless times, as a kid under the age of 10. The illustrations and the descriptions mesmerised me. The book was eventually thrown out, I expect, when I left home but to this day, I remember parts of that book.​​​​​​​​

It was a wonderful role, in which I got to work with small companies just starting out, and with major research facilities into which the state government ploughed money to encourage such high-end research and innovation. I worked with a fabulous team of people – we had a lot of fun and, along the way, we got some nice work done. Oh, and that view!? Unbeatable!
