On this day twenty years ago we began hearing about the the worst natural disaster of its kind in human history. An earthquake registering a magnitude of at least 9.1 struck off the coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, in the Indian Ocean. The following day I was preparing to fly to Sri Lanka to cover the story for the News Ltd organization. The death and destruction I observed was overwhelming at times but tempered a little by miraculous stories of survival. It was three weeks of reporting I will never forget.
