Great to have a few 2YO trials to kick off 15 Barrier Trials at Gifford Hill this morning
The “Inside” Scoop
This morning’s trackwork saw some local trainers the opportunity to work their horses on the inside grass track.
“After a very patient 12 month wait, the decision to get three of our mature mares to test the surface proved to be a welcome… a resounding thumbs up from all involved.” – MBRC Chairman, John Leahy said after attending trackwork.
MBRC Track Manager, Shawn Hicks walked the track and was very happy with the progress. "For a grass track that was only laid 12 months ago, it performed well. After the gallops, the track showed very little wear and tear. The wet winter and minimal sunshine haven’t given us ideal growing conditions, but we are happy with the condition of the turf. Over the winter period, we applied several foliar fertiliser products to stimulate root growth and promote soil microbe activity which has been very beneficial. The Kikuyu has covered the track and gives a soft feel when walking on it. The ryegrass is slowly transitioning out and the Kikuyu is taking over with some more sun and warmer weather ahead, we should see a complete transition to the Kikuyu grass.”
Local trainers also had some excellent feedback regarding this.
"The new inside grass track felt great underfoot. The camber is great and it's just like riding on carpet… Graceful Eagle handled the track great.” – MBRC Trainer, Karen Byrnes.
"Lady De Lune had the opportunity to have a gallop this morning. The track looks quite tight just looking at it, but once you’re out on it, there's plenty of room to work.” – MBRC Trainer, Stuart Padman.
"The track worked well this morning with Russian Style pulling up really well from the gallop. Riding out on the track it felt almost effortless… The camber is perfect and the track has some really nice grass coverage.” – MBRC Trainer, Sue Jaensch.
While the inside grass is not completely open for work, we will start to see more horses working on the track as we slowly transition acro
