There were genuine tears when this beauty was delivered, which was so lovely. When I first spoke to Maddy she said ‘I don’t ever buy myself beautiful flowers because I can never justify the cost but I’ve always wanted the most gorgeous ones on my wedding day’.

We’re so invested in your wedding and event flowers. And when I say ‘we’ I mean ‘mostly me’ and my trusty bunch of fabulous ladies that I call on when I need an extra pair of hands.

I’m one of those people that LOVES to think outside the square, challenge what’s ‘expected’ and get really creative. When I work in this way I feel fulfilled creatively. I trust my eye and intuition to select the best flowers to fit the design brief and am constantly thinking of ways to create something really unique that will suit my couples style and have their guests gushing and raving all night, that’s the aim every single time!

My best advice is to find vendors whose work you really love then fully put your trust in them. That way you can enjoy the lead up and focus on having the best day/night of your lives!!

We love following your floral theme and colours through to all the smaller details like your wedding cake. Not going to lie though, they are tricky and a little anxiety inducing to do! One you poke a hole in that icing there’s no going back!!! 😆

Tiani came to me after speaking to a couple of florists that said she couldn’t have natives and roses combined together in a bouquet. All I can say is, It’s your day, do it your way. We love designing something bespoke and unique for our beautiful couples. I love the challenge of pushing boundaries and doing something different. This is when the magic happens!!!

Have you ever wondered where our business name came from?

When looking for a business name I wanted something that was unique and memorable, something whimsical with a vintage spin and a name that didn’t define my business to just floristry. You see I’m a creative at heart and my skills range from retail Visual Merchandising, interior and photography styling through to my most recent love of floristry.

So lots of names came to mind but one kept sticking in my head. And as it turns out my business name represents my two children. Violet is my daughter’s middle name and she was given this name in memory of her great, great grandmother Violet. Then my son as a young boy was obsessed with animals, especially Foxes so it seemed only fitting that they should go together, Violet and the Fox.

I get so many people compliment me on my business name, I love it so much, and it’s even more special knowing the meaning behind it and the personal connection I have to the name.

Winter Flower Exhibition at Villa Alba Museum (Kew) 2022 ‘Reminiscence’ Where time stands still. We invite you to view our installation and take a moment for yourself to reflect and be still. We’ve created a serene and peaceful space for you to reflect on the past and present, stand on the edge of the quiet and go within. We ask you to see the contrast between nature and architecture. The hard lines and the faded colours of the space as it stands, solid and ageing and the new growth, forever changing, dying, regenerating, living. Can you feel the resonance of the history in this space, within these walls, within this moment in time?

Just a tad cold and very windy today but we had an awesome foraging session and have lots of goodies for our installation @villa_alba_museum as part of their Winter Flower exhibition this weekend. Tickets can be purchased through the @villa_alba_museum website. 🌾🌾🌾 . . . . .

Yesterday I had the privilege of creating this bespoke tribute arrangement for a friend’s lovely Dad, something that I’m always honoured to be asked to do. This man’s pride and joy was his garden and he spent much of his time planning, planting, pruning, weeding and watering it. I foraged there and found a few gems and then with the help of his family who shared with me some photos of the garden in all it’s glory I set about combining these foraged items with other fresh flowers to recreate a small garden to sit atop his casket. I’m very proud of what I was able to create for him and his family felt it was a true and beautiful representation of him.🕊#lovemyjob #flowerlover . . . 🖤🥀🦊

Our Story

Violet and the Fox is a bespoke flower studio run by me, Mel Barkley, from my home in Box Hill North Melbourne. I specialise in unique and unusual flower combos using only the best and freshest seasonal produce on offer. Just like fruit and veggies, flowers are best when we buy them seasonally, plus what a beautiful way to watch the changing seasons through flowers and foliage!

Each week I visit the flower markets and select a colour palette of flowers, foliage, berries, branches you name it. This selection changes every week as that’s nature, always changing. I will then make up various sized bunches and arrangements depending on what orders I receive. If you would like something specific I can accomodate your request with a couple of days notice.

Our services also include flowers for weddings, events and corporate organisations.

This year I will also be running a variety of floral workshops locally so stay tuned!
