I wasn’t paying a lot of attention this morning as I watched a livestream of the swearing a̶t̶ in ceremony for our new Governor General, Samantha Mostyn... until I heard her say, “if I can capture in a few words my aspirations for our country, I believe that these testing times call for an unstinting focus on kindness, on care and on respect”.

She then spent time unpacking that idea, concluding with;
“Care has a deep and resonant place in our Australian identity. Care is the gentle thought and the outstretched hand that Australians have always been ready to share when great challenges present themselves. Care is the quieter, better part of ourselves.”

If we can see that as an aspiration, there is hope. Also, it made the Potato look very uncomfortable and that’s always nice.

The whole speech is available on the vice regal website, here: https://www.gg.gov.au/about-governor-general/media/governor-generals-swearing-speech-parliament-house-canberra

More and more people are saying, 'I don't'.

Annual HILDA survey of 17,000 Australians highlights a sharp decline in marriages. From 2001 to 2021, men and women both have been getting married less. Whereas de facto relationships are on the rise.

Have you thought about getting married, but then decided not to? Are you in a de facto relationship, what are the pros and cons? Love to hear your views!

With more people trying to reduce their environmental footprint, some are even considering their impact after death.

About

Trevar is an Authorised Celebrant with the skills and experience to solemnise baby namings, legal marriages, memorial services and other rites of passage throughout Australia.

He is a father of three teenage children who are deeply suspicious of his mental health, and partner to a wicked drag queen. Though descended from four generations of Gippslanders, Trevar was born and raised in Sydney’s west. After two decades in the rather more tolerable climes of Canberra, he has finally been liberated from urbanity, and finds himself among the sublime hills of South Gippsland.

Trevar has worked in education, theatre and the community sector most of his adult life. Working most days as a relief teacher, he relishes the opportunity to celebrate with couples as they make a lifelong commitment to each other and support families in the grieving process.

He has written feature length and short plays for the stage, and reviews theatre frequently. His plays have been performed in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Hollywood and London. He volunteers at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe every other year, and continues to support the Canberra Gay and Le***an Qwire from Victoria. He has supported many initiatives to help the good people of East Timor, both in the education and arts sectors, and returns to the fledgling nation whenever possible.
