If I’m not calorie counting, how do I know if I’m eating enough or too much for my needs?
Here are some tell-tale signs that can indicate if you aren’t fuelling your body for the training you are doing (this list is not extensive, just a snapshot of some of the signs to look out for):
Plateaus in performance
Fatigue or unexplained tiredness
Increased injuries particularly soft tissue injuries
Increased illness, particularly colds and flu symptoms
Poor recovery between training sessions (e.g., increased DOMs)
Changes to menstrual cycle (females)
It can be daunting to ditch the numbers and rely on your appetite or other natural signs, especially when calorie counting and macro counting have been such common and popular tools used by athletes in the fitness community for years. It’s very much a “trust the process” scenario and one that I recommend seeking support from an Accredited Dietitian with so that you can feel more confident with fuelling your body with food rather than with numbers and develop a healthier long-term relationship with food.
There are plenty of reasons for and against calorie counting and macro counting, so it is key to understand both sides of the story, and seek professional help so you can make an assessment about whether it is the right approach for you.
