On 22 September, we will be at the Canberra Wedding Expo at the National Convention Centre, & we will be talking to hundreds of nearlyweds & their friends & family. If you have an outfit that you are thinking of selling but have been putting it off, now is an excellent time to get in touch. It could be a wedding gown; a reception dress; a bridesmaids gown, a mother of the bride/groom outfit, or even something fabulous you wore to another event that may be of interest. Why, when there is so much else to think about, should I worry about the planet on my wedding day? Surely, one day off my social responsibilities is not too much to ask?
I hear you, I really do. But there is a very convincing answer. One that once you know, you can't unknow.
There are around 110,000 weddings in Australia every year. Each wedding creates an average of 180-270kg of waste and nearly 60 tonnes of CO2. That's the equivalent of what 5 Australian produce in a year.....So, in total, Australian weddings are producing up to 30,000 tonnes of waste and 6.6 million tonnes of CO2 each year. To put that into perspective, that is the annual CO2 emissions of a population around the size of Canberra. Each year. Just from wedding celebrations. 😱😱😱
But from the murky depths of all the numbers, there appears an incredible opportunity for a powerful and positive change.
Can you imagine the collective benefit that we could have if every couple made a few earth-friendly decisions? The thousands of hectares of land saved from excessive floral production. The dramatic reduction in plastic waste from decorations and favours. The significant reduction in food waste (and methane production).
Sustainability is absolutely not about compromise or sacrifice. It's about mindful choices. Local produce and seasonal flowers. Reducing travel impacts. Mindfully choosing decorations and favours. Sustainable attire. There are so many ways ~ and so many vendors that support this approach ~ that it shouldn't require compromise, just perhaps a bit more research. It is well worth remembering that every sustainable choice ripples outward ~ influencing guests, vendors, and future couples.
Your wedding day should absolutely be a day about you, but it is also the perfect day to think about what you want the rest of your life to look like. Love that nutures each other, as well as the world around us. That is absolutely worth celebrating. 🤎

Our Leo Lin Josephine Swallow Print Tiered Gown was on the mannequin at the Wedding Expo over the weekend, and I cannot tell you just how many people stopped to admire it and tell me how beautiful they thought it was. The best comment I heard was 'I dont do froufrou but even I would wear this dress'. We are absolutely here for not letting your 'rules' stand in the way of a gorgeous dress! 🐦

Call it preloved, reloved, gently worn, secondhand, second love, whatever you like. It's hard to imagine wearing a secondhand dress on your wedding day. I get it. To be completely honest, I get it for pretty much every day, let alone the day you decide to make one of life's most monumental changes.
The idea of shopping secondhand for your wedding is going to be especially weird, bordering on freakish, if secondhand shopping is not part of your everyday thought process.
Now, most of us are pretty familiar with it ~ and as peaceful as it sounds, you'd have to be living under a rock not to be ~ but it's for an item here or there. It's not an ingrained mindset. I have to admit that I'm not a great thrifty shopper; I've dabbled, but my commitment level has well & truly been left wanting. However, my wanderings in this world of sustainable wedding fashion have meant that I've really had to face up to my fashion habits. So I've tried harder.
Honestly, it's been haphazard. I've genuinely struggled to know where to start. That sounds like an incredibly bizarre thing to say. Why would it be any different to something I've loved to do for decades?! The answer, for me, at least my friends, is the vastly overwhelming volume of often disordered...well, stuff. It's part treasure hunt, part suffocation. It's a very easy place to drown, even online. The world of clean & clear & brand new shiny styling, where someone else has made full outfit choices & laid them out gloriously in front of you, is a far easier place to be. But that, of course, is not where the magic happens.
There are many creative, stylish, inspiring people shining a light on the path to slow & sustainable fashion. Find them and be inspired. For me, I also need it there in front of me; to see it, to feel it, to imagine it. And I have to keep turning up & reminding myself why. For something as extraordinary as your wedding day, start with *small*. Walk before you can run.Train for the marathon. But in a far more fun, fabulous, non sweaty way. Be inspired. See the dress. Maybe try it on. Know the history. Know the planet loving benefits.
Who knows where your path will lead you. 🤎
I don't think of Sunday Soiree as simply another bridal boutique. There are plenty of places to source traditional bridal wear, particularly if you are after something that fits the wedding industry narrative for a first-time bride. What we are trying to achieve here is something else. Something inclusive. Something far more personal. Something intimate. Something exciting. And something that lives and breathes in our far more diverse world.

There is so much to love about a tea-length dress. I personally adore them. You can show off your shoes without worrying about stepping on your dress. You can twirl without worrying about showing too much leg. They are incredibly flattering with their cinched-in waist. Best of all, they are so much easier to dance in 💃
