Our history so far... πŸ“

The title to what would become the main block of Springwood Farm was established on 27 September 1865, with a Land Grant of 82 acres for 82 pounds to Thomas Atkinson. Thomas was an important landowner and greengrocer in Willunga. The connection between the Hockney family and Springwood Farm began during this period when Thomas employed Robert Hockney to work on the farm when he first moved to Willunga. The main farmhouse was commenced during Thomas Atkins ownership in the late 1800’s and was updated by the current Hockney owners in 2006. The connection between the families continued during the 70s, 80s, 90s & 2000’s, when Colin Hockney had David Atkinson as a trusted farm hand at Springwood. Springwood Farm was purchased by Cyril Hockney and has been owned by the Hockney family since May 1929.

At its peak in the early 1960’s Springwood Farm was over 2,000 acres. The key produce during these years were beef cattle (poll Herefords), sheep and acres of potatoes. Springwood Farm was a key provider of potatoes to Hockney Bros for many years, which were sold at the East End Markets. After Cyril passed away in 1964, the farm passed into the hands of Colin Frank Hockney, Bruce Edward Hockney and Edna, his wife. The farm was downsized to about 900 acres and was managed by Colin. In 1973, Colin and his wife, Julie made the decision to move to the city. At that time, about a half of the land was sold. Colin drove back to Willunga every day to run a smaller farm. In 1985, when Edna passed away, Colin took sole ownership of the farm. At the age of 69, Colin transferred ownership to his children in July 1997. The farm is still in the same hands and continues to trade as Springwood Farm.
