Based in Oaklands, NSW, Empire Proteas grow and supply proteas, leucadendrons and a growing number of Australian natives to the local region. Situated on a 5 acre block, we currently have 1,000 plants of over a dozen varieties to offer our customers. Whether you’re a florist placing a weekly order, a business looking for a regular floral arrangement or that one off customer to mark that special oc

casion, both large and small, we are happy to work with you to provide the best quality stems for your needs. With the vast majority of our flowers picked within 24-48hrs of reaching our clients and coming straight from the farm to the customer, it’s hard to find flowers with more life in them. You can find us at a number of markets in the Border area where you can purchase your stems individually or choose from one of our different sized mixed posies, boxed arrangements and baskets. We also take orders for wreaths, bulk orders and are happy to discuss customised requirements you may have. We are excited to build our business with you and are looking to expand our varieties to cater for all tastes and seasons.

A lesson I learnt from our very first plantings is it’s not cruel to prune the trees when they are young. I let the first plantings go and whilst I got most of them under control now it did take some corrective measures to get them back to where I want them. If you zoom in and see hopefully the new stems from this years plantings will form the basis of some beautiful flowers next year.

The Eucalyptus in the photo is proof that the Australian natives don’t mind a hard prune if required.

2. You don’t need a 100 metre hose just need to make it work. Much like life, you don’t need everything in life but rather be able to work with what you have

3. If I’m doing you the courtesy of providing free rent and utilities can you please not scare the life out of me when I nearly stepped on you.

Just cruising along the trees with the ride on mower and this little guy was chilling on the bark before retreating. Once the initial shock subsided I remembered the old formula

With no rain on the horizon we are going to give the plants a good Seasol tomorrow. The pump has decided to be temperamental so have to put the thinking cap on to get around the distributing of 5,000+ litres. Ran a trial on the home garden to see how it went and whilst it’s nothing too scientific it does the job.

This year we had trees die, a high proportion of buds die before flowering as well many Leucadendrons knocking on deaths door before we were able to bring most of them back. I’m putting on my Nostradamus hat on and predicting a hot summer this year so will get on top of our water, fertiliser and we will use a product such as Wiltnot to try and combat it.

We have the trifecta of Pin Cushions 😍 just waiting to see if the few remaining yellow ones will flower to bring home the quaddie 🤞

We tipped out an inch of rain and the new plants are looking really healthy. The Possum Magics in particular are looking great so we have our fingers crossed we can start getting good flowers of them next year.

Sunday Funday

The sunflowers are growing nicely, nearly 1 Orson tall now!!! Still must have a lot of growth in them as they don’t show signs of opening up soon. It’ll be a great sight out at the flowers we get into the mass planting of them

Whilst the first variety of Paper Daisy’s are in full swing the second variety, which I prematurely gave up on, are coming into flower now and producing amazing results. I have another tray of seedlings, which should be bursting out anytime now, but will go pretty hard on these plantings.

The sun flower seedlings are starting to come through a week after setting them up. They may find themselves out at the flowers next week if all goes to plan which means it’s time to plant more seeds.

I brought 3 buckets of cuttings that I saved from the bonfire to be used for a trial of propagation and managed to get 40 from them in about a bucket and a half. This is the first attempt at this and with no experience or knowledge on the subject my expectations aren’t too high. I’ve read people who suggest hothouses and others who suggest shade so in the spirit of Old El Paso why not try both.

There is something therapeutic about working in the garden and watching it grow. It brings yourself back in with nature so the worst case scenario is it doesn’t work so I get the chance to try again.

When Odie was younger she made me save a patch of grass about 2m by 4m from being mowed because the lady bugs needed a home. Every night she would run out and say goodnight to them before bed.

There isn’t much purpose to this post but seeing all the lady bugs on the sunflowers brought back this memory

Doing a little bit of late pruning trying to cut down on the water and nutrient needs of the trees for the upcoming growing season. Also trying to maintain a more manageable height in the trees as I shouldn’t be needing a ladder pick flowers.

Instead of all the stems ending up on our burn pile we are bringing some back with us and attempting to propagate our own trees. It’s been something I’ve talked about wanting to try for a while now so it won’t hurt to experiment and see where it takes us

No long stems unfortunately but everything is looking healthy. We will be sending out gift boxes again this week and with the addition of our Discolour Leucadendron breaking out in colour they will look great.

We will also be doing up some smaller foliage gift boxes (similar in size to our small Christmas ones) for $15 if anyone is interested.

The plan was to get 2/3rds of the back section done but managed to get all but 1.5rows done after the pull start cord gave way. A quick study of YouTube when I got home and the mower is back in action.

I don’t think it’s hard to see when the mowing was happening during the day. Worst part was the self propelled mower I got for the flowers was also out of action as Bunnings didn’t have any blades in stock yesterday so it was 12+km of pushing a mower around. Hour 3 was when our little baby snake made an appearance so that slowed me down a little bit.

Tuesday should be a bit easier plus we have some more pin cushions ready to pick so that always brightens the day

An arrangement of misfit* proteas which I’m sure will be loved in its new home.

*When I say misfit it’s because it’s the first (and I assume only Prince and Cream Mink we will get to pick) and also one of less than 6 of the Pink Ice we got to pick amongst over hundred dead buds pruned and left on the ground
