মনে করুন যে আপনার ইচ্ছা ছাড়া আপনাকে কোথাও নিয়ে যাওয়া হলো। আপনি অবশ্যই এর ব্যাপারে প্রতিবাদ করবেন কারণ আপনি একজন মানুষ তাই আপনার প্রতিবাদ করার মৌলিক অধিকার আছে। কিন্তু এই ব্যাপারটি এমন এক সময় ঘিরে যখন এমন ভাবেই মানুষদের তাদের ইচ্ছার বাহিরে তুলে নিয়ে গিয়ে অর্থের বিনিময়ে বিক্রয় করা হতো। এটাই হতো সেন্ট ডোমিংয়ে দ্বীপে, দিনে দুপুরে মানুষদের করা হতো বিক্রি, চলতো ক্রিতদাশ বাণিজ্য। কিন্ত একদিন সেই দ্বীপের মানুষেরা রুখে দাড়ালো এই জঘন্য অপকর্মের বিরুদ্ধে, করলো আন্দোলন। দিনটি ছিলো ২২ এবং ২৩শে আগস্ট ১৭৯১ সাল। কিন্ত কেন বলছি এই আন্দোলনের কথা? এটা বুঝতে গেলে আগে নিজেকে নিয়ে যেতে হবে সেই ১৮০০শ শতাব্দিতে। সেই সময়ে ক্রিতদাস বাণিজ্য ছিলো নিতান্তই এক সাধারণ ব্যাপার। এই দাস এবং দাসীরা আসতো হয় আফ্রিকা মহাদেশ নাহয় ক্যারিবিয়ান দ্বীপগুলি থেকে এবং এদের পাঠানো হতো আমেরিকা ও ইউরোপ মহাদেশে। তাই এই বাণিজ্য কে বলা হতো আন্তআটল্যানটিক ক্রিতদাশ বাণিজ্য। হাইতি (সেন্ট ডোমিংয়ে) দ্বীপের এই আন্দোলনের ফলে এই বাণিজ্যের উপর এক বিরূপ প্রভাব পরে ও এই আন্দোলন আন্তআটল্যান্টিক ক্রিতদাস বাণিজ্য বন্ধ করার সিংহভাগ দায়িত্ব পালন করে। ইউনেস্কো ১৯৯৭ সালে তাদের ২৯তম অধিবেশনে আন্তআটল্যান্টিক ক্রিতদাস বাণিজ্যকে স্বরণে রাখতে ২৩শে আগস্ট কে
“ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ডে ফর দা রিমেম্বেরেন্স অফ স্লেভ ট্রেড অ্যান্ড ইটস অ্যাবলিশন” বা স্লেভ ট্রেড এবং এর বিলোপ স্মরণে আন্তর্জাতিক দিবস স্বীকৃতি দেয়।
