06/01/2023

“While black people of all classes are more likely to be arrested, harassed or murdered by the police than white people of the same class, bourgeois black people are much less at risk of this than are working-class black people. Tellingly, they are also much less at risk than are working-class white people. It is not minimising the system’s racism to recognise that the single most important variable in an individual’s risk of violence from the police, therefore, is class.”

Kenan Malik’s new book is a powerful argument for an anti-racist politics informed by class and solidarity, argues Elaine Graham-Leigh (via Counterfire) 👉 bit.ly/ReviewMalikNotSoBlackandWhite

“The figure of King Leopold II becomes the instrument of a biased and uncomfortable patriotism. The disappearance of the colonial discourse has as melting ice a subtile temporality; happening but invisible to the naked eye. This installation is a leap of faith in this change of mentality and an ode to the decolonizing forces behind it; activists, vandals, academics, and other citizens.” Zeye Laura Nsengiyumva on her artwork PeoPL

In 2018, you could see this installation during Nuit Blanche in Brussels. Kopano Maroga wrote the following opinion piece on it 👉 https://bit.ly/OpinionPeoPL

The artist in question is guest at Bozar on 25 January where she will be in conversation with Tom Naegels. This City Talk will focus on the migration history of Brussels.

🎥 Every year, Sabzian asks a guest to write a "State of Cinema". An invitation to reflect on what cinema means, could or should mean today. This year we welcome Chinese director Wang Bing who in addition, chose a film that resonates with that reflection: Stonewalling (2022) by Japanese-Chinese duo Huang Ji and Ryûji Otsuka.

18 December, Wang will come to recite his speech on the Bozar stage. But who's Wang Bing? 👉 bit.ly/RadarWangBing

ALLES VAN PLASTIC IS WEERBAAR

T’is jaren en jaren geleden dat
in een koninkrijk gelegen aan zee
ik een sluimerend kerkhof betrad
met een bos plastic tulpen mee
en die bloemen waren bestemd
voor de schilderbaron daar aan zee

James Ensor heette zijn graf
en de naam stond gebeiteld in steen
en ik stond genageld in het gras
met mijn bos plastic tulpen mee
want er zat een kat op de zerk
van dat graf gelegen aan zee

En die kat was gitzwart en jaloers
zoals iedereen wist daar aan zee
en zodra hij de kleurenpracht zag
had hij liefst met klauwen en bek
mijn prachtige flora ontvreemd
in de hoop: de wind neemt dit mee

Maar alles van kunststof is sterk
en ikzelf telde minsten voor tien
dus met mijn boeket sloeg ik terug
qua vrouwenkracht ongezien
de kat zeilde hoog door de lucht
en de wind werkte ongevraagd mee
zo verkaste het duivelse dier
naar het ondorp Katwijk aan Zee

Pas dan zijn wij onder elkaar
de schilderbaron en ik en terwijl
ik met uiterste zorg mijn kleurige
bloemenpracht schik en neerstrijk
tussen het plastic om mijn naam
te bikken in steen mijn naam
naast de zijne te bikken op die
grafzerk verkleurd door de zee
vaart er plots van onder de grond
een stem door me heen: neem mij mee
want bloemen verwelken en schepen
vergaan bij bosjes hier aan de zee
maar alles wat dood is blijft eeuwig
bestaan en leeft levenslang met u mee

Uit: Dooier op drift (2012) p. 14,15

Stella Gaitano (Khartoum, 1979) is a writer from South Sudan. She is known for her short stories, which often deal with the harsh living conditions of people from South Sudan. Since the country's independence in 2011, she also writes about life in her new nation.

Sudan and South Sudan are home to a number of great writers who are rarely heard here. Tomorrow (30 November), Bozar brings them together for a special evening. The authors will read from their work and talk to Xavier Luffin, translator and professor of Arabic literature at ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles.

What is more immaterial than artificial intelligence? 🌀 Nevertheless, there are artists who give it shape.

Artificial intelligence is a concept that scientists started to describe before really programming it. Simultaneously, authors of fiction started to give it form without any constraints. Finally, there are digital artists who, in the field of art, confront the public with artificial intelligence through generative or interactive artworks.

According to The Guardian, Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin is one of the most important writers from Sudan. The author had to flee for his life and now lives in exile in France. Although his work is banned in his homeland, it is enormously popular and widely read. In 2015, an English translation of The Jungo: Stakes of the Earth and Birth was published.

'We love streets, squares and façades.'

Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan opened their own practice in Zürich, in 2007. Their work focuses mainly on collective housing and individual homes: they are usually commissioned for projects in remote neighbourhoods that lack a clearly defined history or identity. They aim to design distinctive facades that emerge from the ambient anonymity. Together with A+ Architecture in Belgium, we are delighted to host a conference by Swiss practice Lütjens Padmanabhan Architekten.

Belgian artist Ilse D'Hollander died in 1997 at the age of just 29, lonely and full of doubts about her abilities. Her work is gradually being discovered worldwide. Rachel Cusk also appreciates her work. For the cover of her new book Second Place, she chose an artwork by Ilse D'Hollander.

This latest book by Rachel Cusk is a psychodrama about a couple and a well-known painter who moves in with them, with disruptive consequences. At Bozar, Cusk will discuss her work with Nicky Aerts (known from Klara) and how art can both save and destroy us.
