Meet Diane Cain, Owner of Cain's Catering.(formerly Di’s Picnic Basket)

Diane Cain is originally from Barrie and has been living in Port Severn for 15 years. She started Di’s Picnic Basket over 5 years ago. Diane has seen a need for catering year-round and has rebranded her business as Cain’s Catering to let people know she is more than just a picnic.

Diane currently rents the kitchen upstairs at the Coldwater Arena. This is where all the magic happens. Cain’s Catering makes lunches for a private school in Orillia. as well as providing catering for every type of occasion from a small family affair to a luncheon or dinner of 300 plus people. Cain’s Catering offers a fresh homemade Lasagna dinner for busy families on the go. Are you attending a potluck but running out of time to prepare your dish? After graduating from YWCA's “Women in Business” course, Cain's Catering, formerly Di’s Picnic Basket, was born. Cain has been a lover of cooking from her early years. “I learned how to prepare food from scratch in my Grandma’s kitchen. She taught me how to make the classics such as jams, pickles, pies and fresh bread. I wanted to start a business that embodied the feeling of being at grandma’s—full of comfort food and knowing you are exceptionally welcome” states Cain. Since its launch in 2015, Cain’s Catering been a “jack of all trades”, catering lunches for businesses, government, weddings, private parties, participating in outdoor fairs, and even operating a food truck called “Lil Red Beast” in Port Severn. Last year, “Lil Red Beast” experienced a fire that paused operations but created a space for Cain to reflect on the future of the business.

Rising (literally) from the ashes, Cain decided the food truck industry is not the future of Cain’s Catering. “It’s too unpredictable and limited to only the summer months” Cain explains when asked why she chose not to rebuild after the fire. “This became the perfect time for me to try new things— with the food truck, I was time-restricted and there was little room for creative exploration.”

Now operating out of Coldwater, Cain has expanded into all-season catering, providing fresh meals for private schools and annual seniors day luncheon which hosted over 300 guests. Cain has since decided this new era requires a complete rebranding leading to a new business name and website that are more distinct and all-season focused rather than just summer themed. “My old branding just doesn’t fit anymore I want to grow and expand beyond the summer theme and bring in my family roots to it as I believe family (and food) are most important aspects of life.” credit Victoria Filippelli, Georgian Bay Times E-Newsletter Dec 2019
