Amazing what dreams can do. From humble beginnings 15 years ago to now having the Nature Centre and The Wildlife Festival under the umbrella.
This week marks 15 years of Calgary Reptile Parties.
To think some of those kids that we did shows for at preschools that year are now in their 20's is a bit traumatizing... nevermind the older kids.
We haven't had a "I had you at my party now we're having you for my child's party" yet but it's definitely on the horizon.
What an incredible journey it has been. It is incredibly humbling to still be doing this 15 years after we started.
CALLING ALL CAMPERS! THIS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd is PD DAY!
We know about many endangered species like pandas, gorillas and elephants.
There are thousands of less famous species that are also at risk of extinction!
Campers will meet animals that fall into six of the seven levels of conservation on the IUCN Red List: least concern, near threatened, vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered, extinct in the wild, and extinct. They will learn more about how we can protect animals and ensure their survival.

Spent the weekend in Radium BC for The Wildlife Festival and saw some of Canada's iconic wildlife from a safe, respectful distance. We saw this beautiful black bear on the drive in and Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goats and a Wild Turkey in Radium.
It truly is amazing to see what we have in our own backyards.
The Reptile Expo kicks off tomorrow!

May 23rd we Shellebrate World Turtle Day! The day was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. It began in 2000 and is sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue!
We work hard all year to share with people the importance of protecting turtles in the wild! Human threats like pollution, habitat loss and road mortality have greatly affected populations worldwide.
While sharing our love of turtles, we also promote responsible pet ownership! Turtles are a huge commitment - they require large space, are messy, and can live decades under human care.

This weeks Creature Feature Friday is the Peters's banded skink (Scincopus fasciatus)!
Found in harsh deserts in North Africa, these nocturnal skinks spend the day buried in sand and dirt or burrows, often under rocks, logs and bushes. At night they hunt for insects and eat plants.
They average 8" - 10" and can live up to 20 years. Ours is a very docile lizard who will tolerate handling and hang outs. They aren't common as pets.

It's the return of Creature Feature Friday, where we introduce you to some of the animals that call the Nature Centre home!
This week it is one of our Rosy Boas (Lichanura orcutti). When you hear the word boa most people think of giant snakes from the Amazon. The rosy boa only grows between 1,5' - 3' and are one of four boas that live in the United States. They live in rocky deserts in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Northern Mexico.
They don't have the variety of bright colours of other popular snakes, and are underrated as pets. For someone looking for a smaller snake they can be a great choice. However they can live over 30 years, which is a big commitment.

It’s that time of year again 🐰 Domestic bunnies and wild bunnies are very different from one another. Wild bunnies should be left alone and will likely run from you. Domestic bunnies will approach you and come in a wide variety of colours. Always be careful when dealing with wild animals and never take them from their home unless you’re sure they don’t belong there!
