Otto Farm

Fresh from the field locally grown flower bouquets. Flower arrangements for special events available upon request. Farm fresh eggs from happy free range hens.

The flowers from Otto Farm are all grown without any chemicals, we use only compost produced with the assistance of our chickens and turkeys. The farm was originally settled by our ancestors almost a 100 years ago, at that time it was a dairy farm supplying the community with fresh dairy products and vegetables. Presently Otto Farm raises chickens for eggs all year round, once a year we raise chic

kens for meat, and turkeys for Christmas dinners. All of our poultry are free ranging, enjoying fresh air and chemical free treats. The turkeys are raised in the same field that we grow the flowers, practicing regenerative farming practices.

January is the time to make a plan. You know which seeds you want to grow but when do you plant them? Where do you plant them? Inside under lights or in the garden soil? Very confusing at times, definitely a learning curve, I am itching to plant flower seeds but am holding off for a few more weeks! I ordered and received seeds from Circle Farms, and I am waiting for my seed order from Stems. Even thou I have saved seeds from all of my different flowers; I like to change things up with something new!

Follow the link for more information, the Ostriches are on a small family farm in the Kootenays, they are healthy, some are over 30 years old. They are involved in antibody research, unfortunately some wild geese landed at their pond and infected two birds a couple weeks ago.

I couldnt resist passing on this... humor for Sunday morning! 😁
Yesterday I planted my first seeds for 2025... onions!! We are still eating the onions that we grew last year, they were cleaned up and stored in the garage. So far so good! Plant the seeds in a pot in January, as they grow to 3 inches, snip them back to half the size... do that a couple times. In late March you can transplant the little plants to the garden bed. In September you can harvest and store for the winter!

Happy New Year all my flower and chicken loving friends! 2025 will be one to remember, I have lots of new seeds to plant, there will be Dahlia blooms galore and farm fresh eggs to enjoy!

Another year has flown by, December 21st the longest day of the year has now past. Whahoo we are heading for Spring! This Christmas I am going to surround myself with our friends, and family. The little ones will provide lots of laughter and an opportunity to reminisce about the days gone by when their parents were little! I am looking forward to 2025, lots of flowers, lots of friends and lots of adventures! Merry Christmas!!

Its a wrap! I FINALLY finished dividing and preparing the tubers for storage.... my list show 686 tubers but I know I put some away without writing it on my list. Just imagine how many I would of had if all the tuber clumps didnt rot in the ground before I got to digging them! The rains came too early for me, maybe next year I will get them all out of the ground before they get saturated. I did learn the turkeys like to eat the tubers, I guess they are similar to a potato 🤪

The corn seeds we saved in the summer have dried beautifully, they easily came off of the cobs and are now stored in a jar in a dark cool closet. Early February I will do a germination test, we will see if they live up to last years seeds which had 95% germination! I used to buy my organic corn seeds from Vessey Seeds in PEI; definitely saving some $$$.😁

It is time to start the apple cider vinegar... cut up the apples, add the water and sugar and let site for a couple weeks. Have to remember to stir it daily, to keep the fruit under the water. There are lots of "how to" receipes on the internet. Last year was my first year making it and it turned out great. 😍 Give it a try!

It has been a crazy busy week, on Monday night I woke up to noise from the barn where the turkeys reside. I ran downstairs, turned the outside light on but I couldnt see or hear anything more. When Al went outside to feed the birds in the morning there were birds already outside and lots of feathers on the ground. Whoa, the barn door had the bottom ripped off..... Billie the Bear must have been hungry! Two turkeys are missing 😞...hopefully he had enough protein and has gone off to hibernate! Fingers crossed. A new to us door has replaced the old door that had been there for 10 years with no issues... Farming is always lots of work, but the food is worth it!🥰

Storing the tubers is tricky, recommendation is 38-50 degrees F (4-10 degrees C) is best, and aim for 75%-85% relative humidity. After cutting the tubers from the clump, I let the cut dry, which is usually 24 hours, then I layer the tubers into the plastic container with sawdust. I drilled holes in the lid of the container for ventilation. Last year my garage worked perfectly, I bought a tempature/humidity gauge to monitor the room and everything worked out great. No mold, nothing froze, and they didnt shrivel up. Fingers crossed for another good year of storage. I just have to find the time to dig up and separate another couple hundred clumps! 😁

Snap Dragons... so many colors. In October I marked the plants in the garden so I would know which seeds to harvest. Once the seeds are mature I picked them and put them in reusable fruit netting bags. I have hung them to dry on a clothes line in the house. The seeds dry nicely and are contained in the bag. Ready for planting in March for next years bouquets!

In my spare time, lol, I have been saving seeds for next years veggies and flowers. I dont know what happened to my beans, the seeds are definitely smaller than usual. The corn seeds are looking great, they are almost completely dry. Once they are dry I take the seeds off the cobs, and store in a jar in a cool dark closet. Last year I had a 90% germination!! This year hubby processed over 700 cobs of corn for the freezer.

It has been a grind and I am no where near finishing this task. I am glad I had the time to dig the tubers on Saturday, there are already signs of rot. Note to self, figure out a way to drain those rows for next year.
I am dividing, labeling, and storing the tubers in wood chips before putting them on the shelf in the garage. Great project for after work each day😁 After these are done I only have another 300 to dig and store!!

I spent my Saturday in the garden, enjoying the sun and warm afternoon. I have two new rows that were not draining very well, so I spent four hours digging and washing the tubers to prepare for storage. It was a workout! I have a feeling this trailer load is going to take me all week to divide all of thes clumps, stay tuned 😃

Did you know? Turkeys are fed mainly a balanced
diet of corn and soybean meal mixed with a
supplement of vitamins and minerals. On average
it takes 84 pounds of feed to raise a 30-pound tom
turkey. A hen usually grows 1 6 weeks and weighs
8-16 pounds when processed. A tom takes about
19 weeks to reach a market weight of 24 pounds.
Fun fact: Minnesota is the largest turkey-producing
state, at 39.0 million turkeys.

Otto Farm's turkeys are pasture raised, with grain twice a day, they are happy hanging out together. 😍

The crew helping on Sunday, I was able to dig up and wash 20 Dahlia plants; these guys are so nosey! Inspecting my ride, inspecting the worms on the tubers and getting in front of the spray from the hose! They are definitely inquisitive and living the good life!

We really, really like eating pumpkins! Dont throw your pumpkin out, bring it to the farm stand and we will enjoy it!
If you leave it on the ground where the flower stand was we will gladly recycle it to the chickens yard. Thank you!
