The Lilac Row is a third generation family farm located in Southern Alberta. Our name comes from the long lilac hedge that was planted by our G

randparents, Mother, and Uncle when the farm was first built in 1965. Our flower farm, in both name and history, is a continuation of a multi-generational love of all things that bloom and grow.

The lisianthus have arrived. The little rose like beauties are actually a giant pain in the ass when it comes to growing. However, once they are in full bloom and cut they redeem themselves. We started these from seed in DECEMBER OF 2023. Yes. They take 8 Months. 8 months of care and watering and worry. Almost as long as growing a human child.

So why do we do it? They have a similar look to a rose, but we can grow them in Southern Alberta. Most rose varieties here will not overwinter, or it takes a very long time to get a plant large enough to get decent stem length.

They also have an amazing vase life. We can get up to 2+ weeks for our lisis if they are cared for properly. Bonus feature: you get multiple blooms off of one stem!

So what do you think: Worth it?

Give your crispy plants a chance! Mother Nature is resilient and plants are often more hardy than we think. The lesson: give your sad plants a few days before you yard them out, they might just be planning their comeback tour!

One of the best things a gardener can learn is how to pinch back a plant. Pinching can be done to remove damage, spent blooms or to create a more bushy plant. It’s kind of the secret weapon of the garden and an activity that’s great to do if you are frustrated with something…or someone. Just sayin.

Popular isn’t always better! Last year we tried the photo organizer seed storage idea, and while it was fine the 1990’s photo album wins hands down! I find it so much easier to quickly find a particular seed and have a visual representation of how much seeding needs to be done (right now the answer is oodles). The bonus was I found the album in our Mom’s basement so it was free. A nice little reminder to do what works for YOU- not what works for everyone else!
